FaceTime video messages let you record and send a short video when the other person isn’t available for a live call. On iOS 17, the experience is streamlined: you start from FaceTime, choose the contact, and send a recorded message that they can play later.
If you’ve never used this feature, the UI can feel a bit subtle—especially around permissions, delivery expectations, and what the recipient sees. This guide walks through the exact flows on iPhone and iPad, plus what to do when sending fails.

What FaceTime Video Messages Are (and Why They Matter in iOS 17)
A FaceTime video message is an asynchronous recorded clip sent through FaceTime. Instead of waiting for the recipient to answer, you record once, send it, and they watch when they’re ready.
In iOS 17, video messages are designed to work naturally with FaceTime on Apple devices, using your contact identity and FaceTime delivery settings.

Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Send
Before you record a FaceTime video message, confirm the basics. Most issues come down to version requirements, FaceTime activation, or permissions.
Device and OS requirements
- Your iPhone or iPad must be running iOS 17 or later.
- The recipient should also be on an Apple device that supports FaceTime video messages (practically, a modern iOS/iPadOS version is required).
FaceTime must be enabled
- Go to Settings → FaceTime and make sure FaceTime is turned On.
- Under You can be reached by FaceTime at, ensure your phone number and/or email are checked.
- Verify your Apple ID: Settings → [your name] → Sign-In & Security (or simply confirm you’re signed into the right account).
Camera and microphone permissions
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable Camera access for FaceTime.
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable Microphone access for FaceTime.
- Also confirm you’re not blocking permissions system-wide using Screen Time restrictions.
How to Send a FaceTime Video Message
There are two common entry points: starting from the FaceTime app or starting from a contact card. Both result in the same recorded-message flow.
From the FaceTime app on iPhone or iPad
- Open the FaceTime app.
- Tap New FaceTime.
- Choose the contact you want to message.
- Look for the option to send a video message (instead of waiting for a live answer). If the UI offers it, select it.
- Record your message using the camera preview. Keep the face framed—your preview shows what the recipient will receive.
- Tap Send to deliver the video message.
From a Contact card
- Open the Contacts app (or tap a person’s name from Messages or Mail).
- Select the contact.
- Tap FaceTime (or the FaceTime button inside the contact details).
- Proceed to the video message option if it appears.
- Record and tap Send.
What the Recipient Needs to Receive and Watch
FaceTime video messages are delivered via FaceTime to the recipient’s FaceTime identifier (phone number and/or email). The exact playback interface depends on their device and software version.

- If FaceTime delivery is disabled on their device, the message may not reach them as expected.
- Recipients typically need an active Apple ID and FaceTime support on their iPhone/iPad.
Controls While Recording and After Sending
Recording a FaceTime video message is fast, but you still get basic control so you don’t have to live with a mistake.
Replace, re-record, or cancel
If the UI offers a way to cancel or edit the recording before sending, use it immediately. Once you tap Send, the message is considered delivered for playback on the recipient’s end (network conditions can still affect delivery).

Cancel before sending
If you’re not happy with the clip, back out to the recording screen and start over. Try to avoid recording in poor lighting—FaceTime video messages are usable in a wide range of conditions, but clarity matters.
Playback and replies
After the recipient watches the video message, they can respond via their FaceTime flow. In many cases, replying is straightforward if they’re also using FaceTime on a compatible Apple device.

FaceTime video messages use Apple’s identity and FaceTime routing. That affects where you troubleshoot and what settings matter.
Where the video message is stored
By default, the message is delivered for in-app playback. You don’t typically get an automatic “download to Photos” behavior. If the recipient doesn’t open it, it remains available for them to play later.
Storage and bandwidth considerations
- Recording and sending consumes temporary device resources. If your iPhone/iPad is low on storage, uploading may fail or behave slowly.
- Video messages use network bandwidth. Using Wi‑Fi can improve reliability if your cellular signal is weak.
Privacy and permissions
- FaceTime messages rely on your camera and microphone permissions. If they’re denied, recording can fail or the preview will be blank.
- Check your camera/mic permissions after software updates—permissions can sometimes reset.
Troubleshooting When Video Messages Fail
If you can’t find the video-message option, if Send doesn’t work, or if the recipient never receives it, use the checks below in order.

Confirm FaceTime is enabled for you
- Open Settings → FaceTime.
- Make sure FaceTime is turned On.
- Confirm your number/email is selected under You can be reached by FaceTime at.
Check iMessage/Fallback behavior
Some FaceTime-related actions can behave differently if iMessage is disabled or if you’re not signed in properly. Verify Settings → Messages → iMessage is turned On.
Fix microphone/camera permission issues
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera.
- Ensure FaceTime is allowed.
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Ensure FaceTime is allowed.
Then close FaceTime completely and reopen it before recording again.
Update iOS and restart the devices
- Update your iPhone/iPad to the latest available version of iOS 17 (or iPadOS equivalent) via Settings → General → Software Update.
- Restart your device. A full restart can clear stuck FaceTime sessions.
If you suspect the recipient is the problem, ask them to verify their FaceTime settings as well and try receiving on Wi‑Fi.
Check Apple ID and FaceTime settings
Signing out and back into FaceTime can fix account routing glitches.
- Go to Settings → FaceTime.
- Turn FaceTime Off.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Turn FaceTime On again and confirm the correct Apple ID is used.
Network and Wi‑Fi problems
- Try switching networks (Wi‑Fi ↔ cellular) once.
- If you’re on Wi‑Fi, reboot your router or try a different network.
- Disable VPN/proxy temporarily (if used) and retest.
If you see repeated sending failures, record a shorter message and try again. Shorter clips often upload more reliably on shaky networks.

Alternatives if Video Messages Aren’t Available
If the video-message option doesn’t show up, you still have practical ways to communicate.
Send a FaceTime call and use live fallback
Attempt a normal FaceTime call first. Depending on the contact and their device support, FaceTime may still offer ways to leave a message or communicate via available channels.
Send a video via Messages
- Open Messages.
- Select the conversation with your contact.
- Tap the App Store or + button and choose a video option (often Camera or Photos).
- Record or attach a video, then send.
This bypasses FaceTime delivery entirely, which can help when FaceTime identifiers aren’t reachable.
Use SharePlay options (when applicable)
If the goal is media sharing rather than an asynchronous message, SharePlay may be available in some FaceTime contexts. This depends on your apps and the recipient’s device support.

FAQs
Why don’t I see the video message option in FaceTime?
The most common causes are iOS 17 not installed on your device, FaceTime not enabled under Settings, or the contact/account not supporting video messages. Confirm Settings → FaceTime is On and your device is updated.

Will my recipient get a FaceTime video message if they turn off FaceTime?
They may not receive it. FaceTime video messages route through FaceTime identifiers. If FaceTime is disabled or the recipient’s device isn’t compatible, delivery can fail or the message may not appear.
Can I send a FaceTime video message to a group?
Group behavior depends on FaceTime capabilities shown in your UI. If your FaceTime screen doesn’t offer a group video-message path, send to individuals or use Messages/video attachments as a workaround.
Do FaceTime video messages save automatically to Photos?
Usually not by default. Playback is typically handled within FaceTime. If you need the clip in Photos, you’ll have to use a method that explicitly saves or exports the media (your exact options depend on what iOS displays for the recipient).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does the upload take a long time or fail?
Network conditions and storage are the top culprits. Try Wi‑Fi, restart the device, and ensure you have free storage. Also verify camera/mic permissions for FaceTime so the recording and upload pipeline can complete.
Bottom Line
On iOS 17, sending FaceTime video messages is a practical way to communicate when a person can’t take a live call. The core checklist is simple: iOS 17+, FaceTime enabled, correct identifiers, and camera/microphone permissions allowed.
If the feature isn’t showing or sending fails, troubleshoot by validating FaceTime settings, permissions, then updating and switching networks. Once those basics are solid, video messages usually behave reliably.
