The main application source is a Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article (reviewed October 5, 2026). It describes sending defects that Review SEM/EDX cannot classify to a PiFM instrument for further characterization. It does not propose replacing SEM/EDX.
What PiFM measures
PiFM is a scanning-probe technique. A sharp probe tip enhances the optical near field, which is the non-propagating light confined at the tip. That field induces a response in the sample just beneath it. The resulting photo-induced force changes how the cantilever oscillates, and the instrument turns that change into an image with spectroscopic contrast.
A tutorial review in Chemical Society Reviews by Sifat, Jahng and Potma (51, 4208–4222, 2022) opens with this definition: “Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) is a scan probe technique that offers images with spectroscopic contrast at a spatial resolution in the nanometer range.” The review says the signal can include dipole-dipole interactions and photothermal processes.

It also covers configurations, advanced modes, applications and limitations.
The practical point is that a PiFM contrast map is a measured signal. How you interpret it depends on the sample and the measurement configuration. It is not automatically an unambiguous chemical identification.

Why defect review needs a second tool
Automated defect review typically uses SEM, often with EDX, to image and classify defects found by wafer inspection. EDX works well for many inorganic defects. The sponsored article says it does not adequately classify small or organic defects, and these can look alike in an electron image.
The article positions Review PiFM on the Molecular Vista Vista 300 as complementary. It combines non-contact AFM topography with infrared spectroscopy, so one defect yields height, shape and molecular-identity information.
Reported examples (vendor-sponsored)
The examples below come from the sponsored article, which says it adapted information supplied by Molecular Vista. They are sample-specific reports. They are not independent validation or a general detection limit.

Do not read these as a promise that every sub-5 nm defect can be found or identified. Results will depend on the material, the substrate, the operating mode and the instrument.

The proposed workflow
- Inspection finds defects on the wafer.
- Review SEM/EDX images and classifies as many as it can, at high speed.
- Defects that SEM/EDX cannot classify are routed to PiFM for chemical and topographic characterization.
- The results feed root-cause analysis of the contamination or process source.
The article says SEM/EDX throughput is about an order of magnitude faster than PiFM. That is the manufacturer-sponsored article’s claim, not an independent benchmark. It is the reason for the tandem approach: PiFM handles the small set of hard cases, not the full defect population.

These are the axes that matter when deciding which tool a defect needs.
- Chemical discrimination: whether the tool can separate the specific materials involved, such as organic from inorganic particles.
- Size: the particle size where the signal is still interpretable.
- Specimen impact: the article describes PiFM as non-contact.
- Throughput: SEM/EDX is reported as roughly ten times faster.
- Workflow role: SEM/EDX is the high-volume classifier. PiFM is the follow-up for unresolved cases.
The sources do not include a controlled head-to-head test across these axes.

What is not established
- No independent fab-scale evidence on throughput, yield improvement, cost or production qualification was identified.
- A 2026 review in RSC Applied Interfaces (Jafari, Khojastehnezhad and Siaj, volume 3, 266–292) mentions semiconductor quantum dots among PiFM examples. That does not show production-line wafer defect-review qualification.
- PiFM is a family of implementations with different signal contributions. A claim is only meaningful when it names the mode, sample and conditions.
So, can PiFM identify wafer defects that SEM/EDX misses? The sponsored examples say yes for certain small or organic particles. The evidence is vendor-reported and case-specific, and it supports a complementary role.
