For most solopreneurs, the choice is less about whether hosting is “cheap” and more about who will run it. Self-hosting gives you more operational control, but you take on setup, updates, backups, security, monitoring and recovery. A managed cloud platform handles some of that work in exchange for fees and limits on configuration. The right fit depends on your time, technical skills, workload, data needs and the cost of downtime.
What does “self-hosted” mean?
Self-hosted does not necessarily mean buying a computer and keeping it at home. It describes who manages the software and its underlying environment:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Local or on-premises hosting: You run the server on hardware you control. Hardware, power and internet connectivity become part of the setup.
- Self-managed VPS: A provider supplies a virtual machine, but you administer its operating system and applications. Renting a server does not make it a managed application platform.
- Managed platform (PaaS): The provider takes on more infrastructure and runtime work. You still manage your application, data and configuration, with responsibilities varying by service.
- SaaS: The provider operates a ready-to-use application, so you generally manage its settings, users and data rather than its hosting stack.
Amazon Web Services distinguishes these responsibilities across infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS). Its guidance says the right infrastructure depends case by case on business needs, budget, compliance requirements and long-term technology strategy. AWS’s explanation of on-premises and cloud infrastructure is a useful starting point, but the actual boundary depends on the specific service.

| Decision factor | Local or self-managed hosting | Managed cloud platform |
|---|---|---|
| Operational work | You handle setup, operating-system and application updates, security patches, backups, monitoring, troubleshooting and recovery. Local hosting also involves hardware, power and connectivity. | The provider handles some infrastructure or runtime work. You remain responsible for your application, data, access and configuration as defined by the service. |
| Direct costs | Hardware or server rent, storage, connectivity and any paid administration. | Subscription or usage fees; included capacity and plan limits differ. |
| Your time | Administration and incident response compete with time spent building and running the business. | Less infrastructure work may free time for the business, though platform constraints and support boundaries remain. |
| Control and portability | More control over the operating system and configuration, especially with root access. Portability still depends on application architecture, data formats and tools. | Less control of the underlying stack; provider integrations may simplify routine work. |
| Scaling and availability | A single server may require manual resizing or extra design work for redundancy and failover. | A provider may offer scaling and distributed infrastructure; capabilities depend on the service, plan and your application architecture. |
| Data and compliance | Can help meet specific control or location needs, but you must implement and demonstrate safeguards. | Cloud services may support compliance needs, but suitability depends on the provider, service, configuration and applicable obligations. |
“Managed” is not one fixed bundle. For example, Laravel Cloud says its service handles server provisioning, scaling, security, databases, caching, SSL and backups. That is a description of one framework-specific offering, not a feature list that applies to every managed platform. Laravel Cloud’s documentation explains its own service boundary.

Is self-hosting actually cheaper?
It can lower direct hosting charges, but it does not automatically lower the total cost of running an application. Include your own administration time and the work needed to keep backups, security and recovery dependable. A low monthly server bill is not comparable to a managed subscription unless you account for what the subscription includes and what you would otherwise have to do.
TechRadar Pro reported in 2026 that a small VPS capable of running several lightweight self-hosted apps typically cost $5–$20 a month, depending on provider and specifications. It also cited $20–$60 a month for a single SaaS tool. These are indicative figures from that article, not current quotes, universal prices or an apples-to-apples comparison. TechRadar Pro’s discussion of self-hosting gives that context.

A provider-authored PocketBase Cloud comparison published in September 2026 lists its own plans at $0, $10 and $25 for named tiers, and describes entry-level VPS hosting as roughly $4–$6 a month. Those are examples for that product and comparison, not general market rates. The same page points out that on a VPS, the operator handles OS patches and security, backup scheduling, off-site copies and restore tests. PocketBase Cloud’s comparison describes its own options and framing.

Does cloud hosting guarantee better uptime?
No. A cloud provider may offer distributed infrastructure or failover, but infrastructure availability is not a guarantee that your particular application will stay online. The application’s design, configuration and dependencies matter. Check the provider’s service-level terms for the product and plan you intend to use; no universal uptime winner follows from the hosting model alone.
A single self-managed server is not automatically unreliable, either. But you need to plan how you will detect failures, preserve backups and restore service. Backup existence alone is not a recovery plan: you need to know where copies are kept and whether your restoration process works.

Which option fits your situation?
Start with managed hosting when
- Your application is customer-facing and downtime could cost sales or damage trust.
- Your workload is uncertain or could grow in ways that are hard to plan for.
- Your time is better spent building, serving customers or selling than administering servers.
- You do not yet have the skills, interest or time to own patching, monitoring and recovery.
Consider self-managed hosting when
- You have the technical ability and genuinely want to operate the stack.
- The workload is stable and its resource needs are understood.
- You have a concrete reason for more control, such as a specific configuration or data-location requirement.
- The full cost—including administration, backups and recovery—is acceptable to you.
Use a hybrid when responsibilities differ by workload
You do not have to put everything in one place. A hybrid arrangement can keep a specialized or sensitive component under closer control while using managed services for workloads where reducing operational work matters. Treat this as a design choice, not an automatic compliance solution: you still need to verify that each service and configuration meets your obligations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should you check before committing?
- List what you are hosting. Separate the application, database, files and any components with distinct data or availability needs.
- Write down who does each operational task. Check responsibility for operating-system updates, application deployment, access controls, backups, monitoring, security incidents and restoration. Do not assume that a provider handles a task unless its service documentation says so.
- Estimate the full cost. Compare current fees and resource limits with hardware or server rent, storage, connectivity, paid help and your time. Include the cost of an outage or failed restore where relevant.
- Check the data and compliance requirements. Identify required data locations, safeguards and evidence. A hosting choice by itself does not establish compliance.
- Test the exit and recovery path. Confirm how you can export data, move the application and restore from backup. A platform’s convenience can create dependencies; a self-managed setup still needs documented recovery steps.
Do you need to buy a server?
Only if you choose local hosting. A mini PC for a home server is one possible hardware route, but it is optional and the research here does not establish a particular model as suitable. A self-managed VPS uses rented virtual hardware; a managed platform or SaaS does not require you to buy a server.
One discussion in r/SideProject phrased the decision as “when does it make sense to self-host vs just using something managed?” The post also raised useful personal checks: how often you will use a tool, how much maintenance you are willing to do, whether data sensitivity is a real concern, and whether the workload can run on low-power hardware or a low-cost VPS. That is an anecdotal example of one person’s framing, not a representative survey. The discussion is available on Reddit.
