In IBM’s connected setup, model requests and their code context can go to a cloud model service through your organization’s account. An air-gapped setup instead uses an open-weight model on your GPUs. IBM-managed Bob SaaS removes the need for you to operate that backend, while IBM documents regional processing and storage alongside specific administrative-data exceptions. The right choice depends on which data path, operating responsibilities and full costs your organization can accept.
What does “self-hosted IBM Bob” mean?
IBM Bob self-hosted is a customer-managed deployment on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. IBM announced general availability on October 1, 2026, stating that the offering had been generally available since September 24. The organization operates the OpenShift cluster, either on premises or in its own cloud account; IBM says Bob may share a cluster with other applications if resources are sufficient. Deployment is sales-led. See IBM’s self-hosted release announcement and self-hosted deployment overview.

It does not, by itself, specify where inference happens or which service receives code context. IBM says the self-hosted deployment and IBM SaaS use the same Bob IDE extensions and Bob Shell client experience; the difference is chiefly the backend operating model.
Where does code context go in each deployment?
| Choice | Backend and inference path | What IBM documents |
|---|---|---|
| IBM Bob self-hosted, connected | The Bob backend runs on the customer’s OpenShift cluster. Model requests, including the code context they carry, go to a model service through the organization’s account. | IBM’s examples include AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, Google Vertex AI and OpenAI-compatible model services. The backend, identity, audit logs and usage metering stay on the customer cluster in this route. IBM Bob Team’s release article |
| IBM Bob self-hosted, air-gapped | The backend and inference environment are customer-operated; an open-weight model runs on customer GPUs. | IBM describes this as a distinct route from using a cloud model service. The release article does not establish a universal hardware specification or workload capacity. IBM Bob Team’s release article |
| IBM-managed Bob SaaS | IBM hosts and operates the service. IBM documents regional inference, data processing and conversation storage. | Available regions listed in IBM’s data-residency documentation are US East (Washington, D.C.), Europe (Frankfurt) and Japan (Tokyo). IBM’s data-residency page |
This comparison is specific to IBM Bob. The available information does not establish equivalent retention, training, regional-processing or pricing details for other named coding assistants, so those products need to be checked against their own current documentation before drawing a vendor-to-vendor conclusion.

What changes for security and data residency?
Self-hosted: more infrastructure control, more responsibility
With self-hosting, the organization manages backend infrastructure and services, integrations, lifecycle operations, networking, storage and identity configuration. IBM says security event logging and monitoring are handled at the OpenShift platform level and are the customer’s responsibility. That gives the organization a direct role in the platform’s controls and audit practices, but also makes its own operations and configuration part of the security outcome. IBM’s self-hosted overview
In the connected model route, keeping Bob’s backend on your cluster does not mean model requests stay on that cluster: the code context included in those requests is sent to the selected cloud model service through your account. Organizations with a policy that prohibits that transfer need to assess the air-gapped route rather than infer isolation from the term “self-hosted.”

IBM SaaS: regional content handling has a stated exception
IBM says Bob SaaS inference, content processing and conversation storage remain in the selected region, and that conversation data is ephemeral and expires at session end. Separately, account and administrative data—including billing metadata, user identities, team memberships, role assignments and enterprise policy configuration—is stored in US East regardless of the selected region. These are IBM’s product disclosures, not a general promise about other hosted assistants. Review the current data-residency documentation against your organization’s specific residency requirements.
Security controls still depend on how Bob is configured and used
IBM’s security guidance recommends controls at the workspace, approval and integration levels. They reduce avoidable exposure and unsafe actions, but do not make any deployment intrinsically risk-free. IBM’s Bob security guidelines advise teams to:

- Configure
.bobignoreto restrict which workspace files Bob can access. - Limit auto-approval rather than allowing changes or actions to proceed without appropriate review.
- Keep secrets out of prompts and files that Bob can access.
- Require authentication, encryption and access controls for MCP servers.
- Review generated changes and commands before applying changes or running commands.
How should you compare the cost?
IBM’s pricing page, checked October 3, 2026, lists Pro at $20 per month, Pro+ at $60 per month and Ultra at $200 per month. These are IBM-displayed subscription prices, not a self-hosted total-cost estimate. IBM says prices are indicative, may vary by country, exclude taxes and duties, depend on availability, and have monthly or annual plan options. Enterprise pricing is custom and requires contacting sales. Check IBM Bob Enterprise Pricing for current availability and terms.

A self-hosted total cost is not established by those subscription figures. It depends on the OpenShift environment and lifecycle work the organization must provide, as well as its inference choice: a connected route can add cloud-model charges, while an air-gapped route can require GPUs and model-serving infrastructure. Staffing, storage, monitoring, support and availability targets also need organization-specific estimates. Neither “self-hosted is cheaper” nor “self-hosted is more expensive” follows from the published subscription prices alone.

Build a like-for-like estimate
- Start with scope: estimate the users, usage and service availability the deployment must support.
- Add the platform: include OpenShift capacity, storage, networking and the people responsible for upgrades and operations.
- Price the model path: include the chosen cloud model service and its usage charges, or customer GPUs and model-serving operations.
- Include security and support work: account for identity, logging, monitoring, incident response and any support arrangements your organization requires.
- Compare on the same basis: put IBM’s subscription or enterprise quote beside the full customer-operated costs, using the same workload, period and availability assumptions.
Which option fits your organization?
Use the decision criteria below to identify the trade-off that matters most; validate the actual data route and terms with IBM before making a deployment decision.
- Consider self-hosted with a connected model service when you need the Bob backend on infrastructure your organization operates and can accept code context being sent to a cloud model service through your account.
- Assess the air-gapped route when your requirement is to keep inference within a customer-operated environment. Confirm model suitability, GPU capacity and operating requirements for your workload; the cited IBM material does not specify universal sizing.
- Consider IBM-managed SaaS when avoiding customer operation of the Bob backend is more important than running it on your own OpenShift environment, and the documented regional handling and US East administrative-data exception fit your policies.
- Pause for a data-flow review if your policy says “code must not leave our environment.” Clarify whether the rule applies to the Bob backend, model inference, code context, conversation storage, or all of them; those are distinct boundaries.
For a defensible decision, have security, infrastructure, procurement and engineering jointly confirm the code-context route, regional requirements, operational ownership, safeguards and full workload cost. IBM’s deployment materials describe options and responsibilities, but do not provide an independent comparative security study, measured total-cost study or head-to-head performance result.
