Choose the one that fits your household; there is no reason to install all five.
What these services add beyond Jellyfin
Jellyfin is free software for managing and streaming media from a dedicated server to your devices. It remains a natural choice for movies and TV, but the services below focus on separate libraries or jobs rather than replacing it as a general media server. Jellyfin

Self-hosting also does not automatically make a service reachable outside your home. Jellyfin can run without an internet connection, though external metadata will not load offline. For remote access, its networking documentation discusses port forwarding, reverse proxies and VPNs, and says direct internet port forwarding is not recommended. Jellyfin networking documentation

Immich: a photo library you host yourself
Immich is the option to consider when your recurring task is organizing and viewing your own photos and videos. Its requirements are more specific than a simple “run it on a spare computer” suggestion: the project requires Docker Compose and recommends a Linux or other Unix-like 64-bit operating system. Its guidance lists a minimum of 6 GB RAM and two CPU cores, with 8 GB RAM and four CPU cores recommended. These are Immich’s project recommendations, not independent performance benchmarks. Plan storage for more than the original media files. Immich says generated thumbnails and transcoded video increase photo-library storage by 10–20% on average. It also advises placing the PostgreSQL database on local SSD storage rather than a network share. These requirements matter when deciding whether a current server has enough memory, processing capacity and suitable storage. Immich system requirements
Nextcloud: file sync plus a collaboration suite
Nextcloud suits people who want a shared file space and may also use related collaboration tools. Its Hub combines Files, Talk, Groupware, Office, Assistant and Flow: Files handles storage and sync; Talk provides chat and conferencing; Groupware covers calendar, contacts and mail; and Office supports collaborative editing. There are two distinct ways to use it. You can download the server and manage the hosting yourself, or use an account offered by a provider linked from Nextcloud’s site. Navidrome: stream your own music collection
Navidrome focuses on personal music. It presents a collection through a web interface and works with compatible iOS and Android apps. Separate libraries and user-specific controls can make it useful in a household where listeners should have distinct access. It can also transcode music on the fly. Navidrome
The project describes Navidrome as lightweight and suitable for resource-limited devices such as a Raspberry Pi. That is a design description, not a guarantee for every collection or setup; actual demands depend on how you configure and use the service. Navidrome
Audiobookshelf: audiobooks, podcasts and listening progress
Audiobookshelf is for spoken-word listening rather than a general music collection. Its self-hosted server supports multiple users and per-user progress synchronization, along with metadata and cover-art lookup. Its Android and iOS companion apps support offline listening, which the project documentation currently labels beta. If offline access is essential, treat that status as a qualification rather than assuming the feature is finalized. Audiobookshelf documentation

Home Assistant extends a home server beyond media and files. It connects compatible smart-home devices and lets you build automations around them. The project describes its open-source home automation approach as prioritizing local control and privacy. Its official homepage listed more than 1,500 integrations on October 7, 2026; that count changes over time, and the number alone does not establish compatibility with a particular device. It is a different category from the other four: it does not organize another media library. It is most relevant when you have compatible devices and a practical routine to automate, such as controlling several parts of a home from one system.

What to plan before adding a service
Match the host to the workload
Check the operating system, architecture, memory, CPU and storage requirements for the service you actually plan to run. Immich publishes concrete resource guidance; the other project pages describe their own capabilities, but the sources cited here do not establish a like-for-like hardware comparison across all five. Do not treat one service’s requirements as a universal home-server specification.
Separate local use from remote access
A service running at home is not automatically exposed safely to the internet. Decide whether you need access only on your local network or while away, then follow the service’s networking guidance. Jellyfin’s documentation, for example, lists several remote-access approaches and warns against direct internet port forwarding. Jellyfin networking documentation
Make a backup plan
Keeping files on a server does not by itself protect them from disk failure, accidental deletion or other data loss. Decide what needs to be backed up and where an independent copy will live before trusting a self-hosted library as the only copy.
