Self-healing is a workload’s ability to recover automatically after a problem; automated remediation is an action that corrects a detected condition. Remediation can be part of a self-healing system, but it can also fix configuration drift without restoring a failed service. The distinction is whether automation actually brings the workload back to health.
What self-healing and automated remediation mean
The Azure Well-Architected Framework defines self-healing as “the ability of your workload to automatically resolve issues by recovering affected components and if needed, failing over to redundant infrastructure.” In practical terms, the system detects a fault and takes steps to restore service, perhaps by restarting an unresponsive app service or failing over to a redundant resource. Microsoft’s self-healing and self-preservation guidance treats self-healing as recovery after an issue arises. Self-preservation is related but distinct: it means resilience against potential problems.

Automated remediation is a corrective action launched after a condition is detected. It might restart a service, run a scripted workflow, or correct a machine’s configuration. That action may restore a failed workload, but it may instead address drift or a policy finding while the service remains available. Remediation describes the mechanism; self-healing describes the broader recovery capability and outcome.
How the two compare
| Question | Self-healing | Automated remediation |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Recover the workload or affected component, potentially by failing over. | Correct a detected condition; recovery may or may not be the goal. |
| Typical signal | A health check, monitoring alert, or change in health state indicating failure. | A detected failure, configuration drift, or other rule or policy finding. |
| Possible action | Restart a component, recover it, or fail over to redundancy. | Run a restart or workflow, or change configuration to restore a desired state. |
| Proof of success | The workload is healthy again and serving as intended. | The targeted condition is corrected; that alone does not prove the workload recovered. |
These are overlapping categories, not competing technologies. A workload can use remediation as its recovery action, while a configuration-management service can remediate drift without providing failure recovery.

How an automated recovery loop works
A useful design connects a reliable signal to a safe action and then checks whether the result was successful. The Azure Well-Architected Framework describes monitoring-triggered responses and logging as parts of this approach.
- Detect: Monitoring or a predetermined health-state change identifies a problem, such as an app service no longer responding.
- Trigger: A rule or workflow decides whether the signal meets the conditions for action.
- Act: The system performs a corrective step, such as restarting the app service. More involved actions can run through a webhook, Azure Function, Logic App, or Azure Automation runbook.
- Verify and observe: Check the workload’s health after the action and retain logs so operators can understand what happened and whether recovery succeeded.
For a critical workload, a restart may not be enough: recovery may depend on a redundant component or resource and an automatic failover path. Automation cannot restore a service through a dependency or recovery path the design does not provide.

Where automation should stop for human evaluation
Not every condition has a safe, universal fix. Microsoft’s example is a problematic queue message: move it to a dead-letter queue so repeated processing does not block later work, then evaluate the message manually and choose a scenario-specific remediation. The containment is automated, but deciding how to repair or handle that particular message may require human judgment. A sound design automates repeatable detection and safe containment without blindly retrying or applying an unsuitable fix.

Configuration correction is not necessarily recovery
Azure Automanage Machine Best Practices
Microsoft describes Azure Automanage Machine Best Practices as onboarding and configuring selected services, monitoring machines for configuration drift, and correcting detected drift. That is automated remediation: the target is the machine’s configuration state, not necessarily recovery from a failed workload. Microsoft’s documentation says this Azure service is scheduled for retirement on September 30, 2027, and describes changes beginning February 1, 2025, for services dependent on the deprecated Microsoft Monitoring Agent. See Microsoft’s service documentation for its scope and lifecycle details.

Azure Arc machine configuration
Automation does not always mean automatic correction. Microsoft says the security baseline installed through machine configuration for Azure Arc-enabled servers runs in audit-only mode: it reports noncompliance but does not automatically remediate it. That is a useful example of why readers should check what a service actually does rather than infer corrective behavior from a feature’s name. Details are in Microsoft’s Azure Automanage for Azure Arc-enabled servers documentation.

When evaluating a system described as self-healing, look beyond whether it can run a script. Ask what it detects, what it changes, and whether the workload is demonstrably healthy afterward.

- Goal: Is the intended result service recovery, configuration compliance, or both?
- Signal: Which health or drift conditions trigger action, and how are false alarms handled?
- Action: Does the system restart, recover, fail over, or reconfigure—and under what conditions?
- Coverage and dependencies: Which components are monitored, and does recovery rely on redundancy that is actually available?
- Human boundary: Which cases have a safe predefined action, and which require evaluation?
- Verification and visibility: Can operators see the action, its logs, and evidence that the workload recovered rather than merely that the action ran?
A service-specific figure should not be mistaken for a general measure of server resilience. Microsoft’s AKS Automatic quickstart documents that 99.9% of qualifying pod readiness operations complete within five minutes. That figure applies to qualifying pod readiness operations in that AKS service documentation, not to self-healing servers generally or to every kind of failure. See the AKS Automatic quickstart.
