Choose Selenium when you need language-neutral WebDriver bindings, multiple target browsers, or an existing remote Selenium Server setup. Choose Puppeteer when your project is JavaScript-first and your automation fits its documented Chrome and Firefox support. Neither is a universal winner: confirm the browser, language, and protocol features your job needs before committing.

At a glance: Selenium vs. Puppeteer

Decision point Selenium Puppeteer
Language WebDriver is language-neutral, with Selenium bindings for multiple languages. Selenium WebDriver documentation A JavaScript library, most natural in a JavaScript or Node.js codebase. Puppeteer documentation

Choose based on the job, not a blanket speed claim

Pick Selenium for language and browser flexibility

Selenium WebDriver provides a language-neutral interface and can drive a browser locally or remotely through Selenium Server. That makes it a natural fit when a team works in a language other than JavaScript, needs a common automation approach across browser implementations, or already runs a remote Selenium environment. The abstraction does not make every browser feature identical: verify support and capabilities for the specific browser you target.

Pick Puppeteer for JavaScript-centered Chrome or Firefox work

Puppeteer is a JavaScript library with a high-level browser-control API. It is a straightforward fit when automation lives in Node.js and the documented Chrome or Firefox support meets your needs. Puppeteer’s protocol defaults matter: Chrome uses CDP by default, while Firefox uses WebDriver BiDi by default.

Do not choose on assumed runtime performance

The official material cited here does not establish a current controlled benchmark comparing equivalent Selenium and Puppeteer workloads. If speed will decide the architecture, benchmark your own suite using the same browser versions, machine or container, workload, and parallelization settings. Record both total runtime and failures; a faster run that misses required browser behavior is not a useful win.

Understand the protocol difference, especially WebDriver BiDi

WebDriver and CDP are not interchangeable labels

Selenium WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation and provides the standardized browser-control interface in Selenium’s ecosystem. Puppeteer uses Chrome DevTools Protocol for Chrome by default. A project that depends on protocol-specific behavior should verify that behavior in the selected library, browser, and protocol rather than assuming a feature available through one interface is available through another.

BiDi adds browser-to-client events, but support is evolving

WebDriver BiDi uses a WebSocket for two-way communication, allowing automation clients to receive browser events such as network activity, console messages, and JavaScript errors. Selenium describes BiDi as a standards-based cross-browser direction and says its implementation is transitioning from classic WebDriver while seeking backward compatibility. Check actual language-binding and browser support for the BiDi feature you need.

Puppeteer documents production-ready BiDi support for Chrome and Firefox, but Chrome continues to use CDP by default because not all CDP features are available through BiDi. Puppeteer also documents BiDi-specific unsupported features. In practice, “supports BiDi” is not a guarantee of full API parity or identical behavior across browsers.

Setup and package choices

What Selenium setup involves

For Selenium, select a language binding, the browser to automate, and the browser’s relevant driver implementation. The browser and driver determine what capabilities are available, so check the official Selenium documentation for the target browser and the setup instructions for your chosen binding. Selenium can operate locally or use Selenium Server to drive a browser on a remote machine.

When Puppeteer downloads Chrome

Installing puppeteer normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build, so a separate manual browser download is not required in the usual setup. That behavior can depend on installation scripts and environment configuration. Use puppeteer-core when you manage the browser yourself or connect to a remote browser; it omits the browser download.

Practical selection checklist

  • List the programming languages the automation must support.
  • Name the exact browsers and browser versions the workload must cover.
  • Identify whether execution is local, remote through Selenium Server, or against a separately managed browser.
  • Write down any need for browser events or protocol-specific features, then verify current support in the binding and browser combination.
  • If runtime is decisive, compare equivalent runs in your actual deployment environment rather than relying on a general speed claim.

Screenshot-only jobs: use a screenshot API instead of operating a browser

Selenium and Puppeteer are browser automation libraries; they make sense when a task needs interaction, navigation logic, or custom browser control. If the task is simply to capture a URL as an image or PDF, a screenshot API can avoid maintaining browser setup in your application. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. See ScreenshotNeo.

Or skip the browser setup

Make a GET request with a URL to receive a screenshot. This cURL example saves a WebP image; replace the sample URL with the page you need and use your API key.

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Troubleshooting the choice

“Puppeteer installed, but Chrome is missing”

The puppeteer package normally installs a compatible Chrome for Testing build, but installation scripts or environment configuration can affect the download. Check the install output and your environment. If you deliberately use a managed or remote browser, use puppeteer-core and configure the browser connection rather than expecting the package to download one.

“My Selenium code works in one browser but not another”

Selenium’s common interface does not erase browser-specific implementation differences. Confirm that the target browser and driver support the capability or interaction, and check the Selenium documentation for that browser rather than assuming identical support.

“A feature works with CDP but not BiDi”

CDP and BiDi feature coverage is not identical. Puppeteer keeps CDP as Chrome’s default because not every CDP feature is available through BiDi, and its documentation lists BiDi-specific unsupported features. Verify the needed API against the selected protocol and browser; use the supported protocol for that requirement or choose a different approach.

“We need browser console or network events”

WebDriver BiDi is designed for two-way communication that can deliver browser events, but availability depends on the specific Selenium binding or Puppeteer protocol path and browser. Check the current implementation and feature support before building a workflow around an event.
