1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBoth Selenium and Playwright can capture website screenshots. For visual regression testing, Playwright Test has the more direct built-in workflow: expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() creates a reference image on its first run and compares later captures against it. Selenium documents screenshot capture, but the Selenium screenshot documentation cited here does not provide a built-in baseline assertion; teams can add a separate image-comparison tool. Choose based on whether you need integrated visual assertions or want to build on existing WebDriver infrastructure.
What differs: capturing an image versus testing it
A screenshot is an artifact; a visual test adds a comparison against an approved reference and reports meaningful differences. Both frameworks capture pages and elements, but their documented workflows differ at that second step. Playwright Test includes a visual assertion. Selenium’s cited screenshot documentation covers capture, so a Selenium suite needs a separate comparison layer if it is to validate images against baselines.
This is a workflow distinction, not a claim that one framework captures faster or produces better images. The official documentation reviewed does not establish a performance or quality benchmark.

| Testing need | Selenium | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Capture a page | WebDriver screenshot methods are documented; the JavaScript API returns a Base64-encoded PNG and describes capture as best effort. Selenium WebDriver API | page.screenshot() saves an image and supports options and buffers. Playwright screenshot documentation |
| Capture an element | WebElement screenshot methods capture the visible region within the element’s bounding rectangle. Selenium screenshot examples | Use a locator screenshot to capture an element. Playwright screenshot documentation |
| Capture a full page | Behavior depends on binding and driver support. The JavaScript API gives a best-effort preference order beginning with the entire page; Ruby documents full-page capture where supported. Selenium WebDriver API | Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. Playwright screenshot documentation |
| Compare against a baseline | The cited screenshot docs do not document a built-in baseline assertion. Select and integrate separate image-diff tooling. | Playwright Test provides toHaveScreenshot(); the first execution creates a reference and later executions compare against it. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Control visual instability | Use stable waits and control the browser/runtime environment; the cited Selenium screenshot docs do not describe a visual-baseline stability mechanism. | The assertion waits for two consecutive identical captures. Masks, animation handling, stylesheets, and diff thresholds are available, but environmental and page-content variation still need attention. Playwright visual comparisons · PageAssertions API |

Choose the workflow that fits your suite
Choose Playwright Test for an integrated visual assertion
If screenshot regression testing is a primary goal and you want the test runner to manage reference-image creation and comparison, Playwright Test is the more direct documented fit. Its assertion waits for two consecutive identical captures before comparing, and exposes controls for handling dynamic elements and acceptable image differences.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Selenium when WebDriver or Grid is central
If your team already has substantial WebDriver coverage, language bindings, or a distributed Selenium Grid setup, screenshot capture can fit into that infrastructure. Add a separately chosen image comparison workflow if tests must detect deviations from approved screenshots. Grid supports execution across machines and platforms, but does not itself supply screenshot baseline assertions. Selenium overview

In Python, WebDriver can save a page screenshot and a WebElement can save its screenshot. These examples show capture only; they do not compare images with a baseline.

Capture and compare with Playwright Test
For Playwright’s integrated visual assertion, use the Playwright Test runner. On the first run, the assertion creates the reference screenshot; later runs compare against it.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
For a capture without a baseline assertion, Playwright can save a page image directly. Set fullPage: true for the full scrollable page, or use a locator screenshot for a specific element. Playwright screenshot documentation

Make visual comparisons meaningful
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Generate and review baselines in the same environment used for test runs where possible; when testing several browsers or platforms, manage the references for those combinations rather than assuming one image fits all. Control dynamic content deliberately
Dates, rotating promotions, changing user data, animations, and late-loading assets can make captures differ for reasons unrelated to a regression. Stabilize data and waits where practical. Playwright offers masks, animation handling, and stylesheet overrides to hide or adjust volatile elements. Document what a mask excludes: hiding a region can prevent the test from detecting a real defect there.
Review diffs before accepting new references
A changed screenshot is not automatically an acceptable change. Review the difference, decide whether it reflects an intended UI update, then update the baseline deliberately. Keep thresholds tight enough to catch regressions that matter; a permissive threshold can conceal them.
Separate capture scope from assertion scope
Decide whether each test should inspect the viewport, a full page, a clipped area, or one component. A full-page capture is useful for page-wide layout but can include more volatile content; an element capture narrows the comparison but will not catch problems elsewhere. Selenium’s full-page behavior is not a universal guarantee across drivers and bindings.
Common problems and fixes
- The first Playwright visual test reports a new snapshot: this is expected when the reference is first created. Review that image as the intended baseline before relying on future comparisons.
- The same test changes between runs: check browser and operating-system consistency, headless configuration, data, fonts, waits, animations, and other dynamic regions. Use Playwright’s masks or stylesheet controls selectively where appropriate.
- A full-page Selenium screenshot is incomplete: full-page capture depends on implementation support. Check the binding and driver behavior; do not assume every WebDriver screenshot method captures the entire scrollable document.
- A Selenium screenshot exists but the test misses visual regressions: capture alone does not compare with an approved image. Add a separate image-diff or baseline workflow.
- A tolerance hides a visible defect: reduce the allowed difference and review whether masked or adjusted regions are too broad.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first when you need screenshots through an API rather than a browser test framework: cookie banners are accepted and removed along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.
