For Python screenshots, both Selenium and Playwright can capture a rendered webpage, save a PNG, and return image bytes. Playwright is the more direct fit when you need documented full-page capture, locator-based screenshots, or screenshot assertions in Playwright Test. Selenium remains a sensible choice when your project already uses it; its Python API documents viewport and element screenshots, while full-document screenshot methods in the reference consulted are associated with Firefox options and should be checked against your installed version.
Neither is established as universally faster or more accurate. Choose by browser coverage, capture scope, existing test stack, and whether you need visual baseline comparisons.
Capability comparison
| Need | Playwright Python | Selenium Python | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viewport screenshot | page.screenshot(path="..."); can also return bytes |
driver.save_screenshot(...), get_screenshot_as_file(...), or get_screenshot_as_png() |
Both cover ordinary rendered-page capture. |
| Full scrollable document | page.screenshot(path="...", full_page=True) |
The Python API reference consulted lists full-page methods in Firefox options; confirm support for your installed Selenium version and browser. | Playwright documents the option directly; do not assume Selenium full-page methods are portable across browsers. |
| One element | page.locator(selector).screenshot(path="...") |
element.screenshot(filename) |
Both provide element capture. |
| Image bytes for processing | page.screenshot() returns bytes when no path is supplied |
get_screenshot_as_png() returns bytes |
Either output can be passed to image-processing or diff code. |
| Visual baseline workflow | Playwright Test documents toHaveScreenshot() and baseline handling. |
No first-party baseline-comparison workflow is established by the Selenium API reference consulted. | Choose Playwright Test when its documented screenshot assertion workflow fits; this does not rule out third-party Selenium tools. |
Choose by your project’s needs
Choose Playwright when
- You need a straightforward, documented full-page screenshot through
full_page=True. - You want to capture a component through a locator or obtain bytes directly.
- You want Playwright Test’s documented screenshot-baseline assertions.
- Your project can use Playwright’s browser and sync or async Python APIs.
Choose Selenium when
- Your browser automation and tests already run on Selenium, so using its screenshot APIs fits your existing setup.
- Viewport or element capture meets the requirement.
- You have verified any required full-document method for the specific browser and Selenium version you install.
Decide before switching
- Browser matrix: identify the browsers your application must cover and confirm each library’s support in your chosen versions.
- Screenshot scope: distinguish viewport, entire scrollable page, a single element, browser chrome, and desktop capture.
- Python integration: match sync or async Playwright use to your application; consider the Selenium stack already used by your tests.
- Regression checks: decide whether you need visual baseline assertions rather than just image files.
- Environment control: make local and CI rendering conditions consistent before comparing images.
Capture screenshots with Playwright in Python
Install Playwright and its browser binaries in the environment where the script will run:
python -m pip install playwright
python -m playwright install chromium
This synchronous example captures the viewport, the full page, one element, and screenshot bytes. Replace the example URL or selector with the target page and component.

from pathlib import Path
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
url = "https://example.com"
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
page.goto(url, wait_until="networkidle")
# The visible viewport
page.screenshot(path="viewport.png")
# The full scrollable document
page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True)
# One component; use a selector present on the page
page.locator("main").screenshot(path="main.png")
# Bytes for further processing instead of saving another file
image_bytes = page.screenshot(type="png")
Path("from-bytes.png").write_bytes(image_bytes)
browser.close()
wait_until="networkidle" is one possible navigation condition, not a guarantee that every site’s client-side content, animation, or lazy images have finished. For pages with a known readiness signal, wait for that signal explicitly before capturing:
page.goto(url, wait_until="domcontentloaded")
page.locator("main").wait_for(state="visible")
page.screenshot(path="ready.png", full_page=True)
Async Playwright
Use the asynchronous API when it fits the application’s event loop. Do not call asyncio.run() from code that is already running inside an event loop.
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900})
await page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
await page.screenshot(path="full-page.png", full_page=True)
await page.locator("main").screenshot(path="main.png")
image_bytes = await page.screenshot(type="png")
browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
Capture and compare a visual baseline
Playwright Test documents screenshot assertions such as toHaveScreenshot(). This workflow is for regression checking, rather than merely saving an image; its output is meaningful only when baseline and comparison runs use controlled rendering conditions.

Capture screenshots with Selenium in Python
The following example uses Selenium’s Python WebDriver APIs for a viewport image, an element image, and PNG bytes. It assumes a compatible Chrome browser and driver are available to Selenium in your environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1440, 900)
driver.get("https://example.com")
# The current browser viewport
driver.save_screenshot("viewport.png")
# One element
main = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "main")
main.screenshot("main.png")
# PNG bytes for downstream processing
image_bytes = driver.get_screenshot_as_png()
Path("from-bytes.png").write_bytes(image_bytes)
finally:
driver.quit()
Selenium’s current-window screenshot APIs capture the rendered webpage, not browser application chrome. The Python API reference consulted also lists full-document screenshot methods associated with Firefox options. Because that reference is older and this behavior is browser-specific, verify the method’s presence and behavior in the Selenium version and Firefox setup you actually use before relying on it. Do not treat a viewport screenshot as a full-page capture.
Understand what the screenshot includes
These APIs capture webpage content rendered by a browser. They do not, by themselves, capture the browser’s address bar, tabs, window decorations, or the full desktop. If your requirement is an image of the Chrome application window including its URL bar, a webpage screenshot API is the wrong capture scope; use an operating-system-level desktop capture method instead.

A full-page image also does not guarantee that every below-the-fold image or dynamically inserted section has loaded. Wait for the page’s own readiness condition, and check the resulting file when the site relies on lazy loading or scroll-triggered content.
Make visual comparisons repeatable
Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation cautions: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” A baseline captured on one machine can therefore differ from a run elsewhere even when the page code has not changed.
Recommended Free Tools
- Run baseline creation and comparison with the same operating system, browser version, viewport, and headless configuration.
- Keep rendering settings and the CI environment stable; avoid comparing images produced under materially different hardware or power conditions when visual pixel differences matter.
- Wait for fonts, images, animations, and app-specific content to settle before capture.
- For an element screenshot, target a stable component boundary rather than a selector whose layout changes between runs.
- Review diffs in context: a changed image may reflect rendering-environment differences as well as an application change.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
The documentation reviewed establishes screenshot capabilities, not a controlled Selenium-versus-Playwright speed test. There is no evidence here for a universal performance winner or for one library producing inherently more accurate screenshots. Benchmark your actual pages, browser versions, and CI setup if capture time is decisive.

Reliability depends on more than the screenshot call: browser installation, page readiness, network behavior, dynamic content, and consistent runtime configuration all affect whether the captured result is useful. For recurring comparison jobs, include browser and environment setup in the workflow rather than treating the saved image as an environment-independent artifact.
