Selenium vs. Playwright for Screenshots of Lazy-Loaded Web Pages

Neither Selenium nor Playwright guarantees lazy content is loaded before capture. Trigger loading, wait for a page-specific condition, then take the screenshot.

Neither Selenium nor Playwright automatically guarantees that lazy-loaded content is present in a screenshot. First trigger the page to load the content you need, then wait for a page-specific signal that it has appeared. Only then capture the viewport or full page. Playwright documents a full-page option and an explicit way to scroll an infinite list; Selenium documentation warns that document readiness can come before JavaScript-driven content is ready.

What matters for lazy-loaded screenshots

A full-page screenshot controls the capture extent; it does not prove that every image or list item has been fetched and rendered. Content that loads on scroll may not exist in the page yet when the screenshot is taken. The reliable sequence is to navigate, trigger the relevant loading behavior, wait for the expected content, and capture.

This distinction applies to both frameworks. Choose based on the workflow and browser/language requirements that suit your project, not on an assumed universal speed or reliability winner: the cited documentation does not establish one.

How Playwright handles the workflow

Playwright’s page API supports a full-scrollable-page screenshot with page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }); viewport capture is the default. Its guidance also recommends scrolling a bottom target into view to force an infinite list to load more content. Although Playwright actions generally scroll elements into view when needed, explicitly scrolling a suitable target is useful when the scroll itself triggers additional loading. See the Playwright Page API and Playwright scrolling guidance.

Runnable pattern

Replace the URL, footer selector, and final-item selector with values specific to the site under test. The wait for the final item is an example of a content-specific condition; it is not a universal selector or guarantee that every site’s loading behavior is covered.

const url = 'https://example.com/listing';
await page.goto(url);
await page.locator('footer').scrollIntoViewIfNeeded();
await page.getByText('Expected final item').waitFor();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });

If the page loads content in several batches, one scroll to the footer may not be sufficient. Adapt the trigger to the site’s design and verify the item or count that matters before capturing.

How Selenium handles readiness and capture

Selenium’s page-load strategies use document.readyState as part of navigation readiness. That state alone is not proof that a JavaScript application has finished changing the page: scripts can add or reveal content afterward. Selenium’s waiting guidance therefore supports waiting for a condition that reflects the required application state, rather than treating navigation completion as content readiness. See Selenium Waiting Strategies and Selenium Browser Options.

The Selenium JavaScript WebDriver API describes takeScreenshot() as a best-effort capture with an ordered preference beginning with the entire page, followed by the current window, visible frame, and display. This is what that JavaScript API reference says; it should not be assumed to describe identical behavior in every browser driver or Selenium language binding. Check the behavior of the specific combination you run. See the Selenium JavaScript WebDriver API.

Practical Selenium sequence

  1. Navigate to the page and establish any required state, such as authentication or a filter.
  2. Use the page’s relevant interaction or JavaScript to trigger lazy content. For an infinite list, that may mean scrolling through the list in increments; the cited Selenium sources do not prescribe a single lazy-load recipe.
  3. Wait for an explicit condition, such as the expected final item becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing. Selenium’s condition-based waits are preferable to assuming that readyState means the application is done.
  4. Take the screenshot using the API and capture extent supported by your binding and browser driver; verify the resulting image includes the intended content.

How to decide between the frameworks

Decision point Playwright Selenium Practical implication
Capture extent The Page API documents fullPage for the full scrollable page; viewport is the default. The cited JavaScript API describes a best-effort preference order starting with the entire page. Do not assume identical screenshot semantics across drivers or bindings; validate the output in your actual setup.
Triggering more content Guidance shows scrolling a bottom target into view to force an infinite list to load more. The cited documentation covers waits and readiness, but does not provide an equivalent lazy-list recipe. In either framework, deliberately trigger the page behavior and confirm the content appeared.
Readiness Wait for the expected content; the full-page option does not mean all lazy content has loaded. readyState may occur before JavaScript-driven application changes finish. Prefer a meaningful content condition over a fixed delay or navigation completion alone.
Visual repeatability Playwright warns that rendering can vary with host OS, browser, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A directly comparable Selenium visual-baseline statement is not established by the cited material. Keep capture and comparison environments consistent; do not infer a framework-wide reliability ranking.

Make captures more repeatable

For visual regression, use a stable browser, operating system, headless setting, and related environment between baseline creation and later captures. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation notes that rendering can vary across host environments and configurations. A screenshot mismatch can therefore reflect environment differences as well as a page change. See Playwright Visual comparisons.

For either framework, make the readiness check specific to the page: an expected item is present, the relevant count is reached, or the loading state has ended. A fixed sleep can sometimes mask timing problems and waste time; it does not prove that the necessary content loaded.

Troubleshooting missing content

  • The screenshot ends before the expected list item. The list may not have loaded all batches. Scroll to trigger further loading and wait for the target item or expected count before capture.
  • Images are absent but text is present. The image may load only when its element approaches the viewport. Scroll the relevant image or section into view, then wait for a page-specific loaded signal before taking the screenshot.
  • Selenium captures too early. Navigation’s document readiness can precede JavaScript-rendered changes. Replace reliance on navigation completion alone with a condition-based wait for the required element or state.
  • Playwright’s full-page capture is still incomplete. fullPage: true expands the capture area; it does not itself establish that every lazy element was requested or rendered. Trigger loading first and verify the content.
  • Full-page behavior differs across machines. Browser, driver, binding, operating system, headless mode, and rendering settings can affect results. Confirm the behavior in the exact environment used for captures instead of generalizing one API description to all setups.
  • Visual snapshots change without an obvious page edit. Check that the capture environment and browser settings match the baseline, including headless mode and host configuration.
