Selenium 4 lets you control browsers locally with WebDriver or remotely through Selenium Grid. For many standard setups, Selenium Manager handles browser-driver setup automatically, so you do not need to start with a separate driver download or Selenium Server.
What is Selenium 4?
Selenium is a set of language bindings and browser-controlling implementations. WebDriver is its core browser-control API: a script sends commands to a browser, either on the same machine or through a remote server. The WebDriver standard is a W3C Recommendation; newer protocol work continues in later drafts. See the Selenium WebDriver documentation and the W3C WebDriver publications.
Do I need to download ChromeDriver for Selenium 4?
Often, no. Modern Selenium uses Selenium Manager to manage browser and driver installation when a WebDriver instance is created. This automates much of the setup in standard environments; it is not a guarantee that every browser, custom installation, or restricted network will work without configuration. The Selenium getting-started documentation covers current setup guidance.
If driver startup fails, first check that the browser is installed and that the machine can reach any required downloads. Network restrictions, nonstandard browser locations, and browser-specific issues can require manual diagnosis. Older Selenium instructions that require putting a driver on PATH may not describe the normal setup for a current Selenium release.

Do I need Selenium Server to run tests locally?
No. A local WebDriver script can start a browser on the machine running the script; Selenium’s Python API documentation says the Java server is not needed for local scripts. A server becomes relevant when you want remote browser execution. See the Python API documentation.
- Local WebDriver: use when the browser runs on the same machine as the test process.
- Remote WebDriver with Grid: use when tests should run against a shared remote browser pool or need Grid’s remote execution model.
The documentation establishes these execution patterns, but does not provide general cost or performance benchmarks for choosing between them.

How do I start Selenium Grid 4?
The documented standalone quick start calls for Java 11 or newer, one or more browsers, a Selenium Server JAR, and browser-driver handling through Selenium Manager or installed drivers. Check the current Grid quick-start guide before running commands: the JAR version changes, and containerized or distributed deployments have additional requirements.
- Install Java 11 or newer and the browser or browsers your tests will use.
- Obtain the current Selenium Server JAR following the official Grid instructions.
- Start standalone Grid, substituting the actual JAR filename for the version placeholder:
java -jar selenium-server-<version>.jar standalone. - Configure the test’s RemoteWebDriver to connect to
http://localhost:4444.
For a language-specific RemoteWebDriver constructor and browser capabilities, follow the current Selenium documentation for that binding. The Grid quick-start command is not a substitute for the deployment instructions for a multi-machine Grid.

What is WebDriver BiDi?
WebDriver BiDi is a bidirectional extension to WebDriver that uses a WebSocket connection, allowing browser and controlling script to exchange messages and stream events. Selenium documents feature areas such as logging, network, and script APIs. This can support workflows that need browser events—for example, observing network activity, console messages, or JavaScript errors—rather than only issuing commands and reading their immediate results.
BiDi implementation is evolving. Availability depends on the browser and Selenium language binding, so consult the current Selenium BiDi documentation for the target stack rather than assuming a feature works everywhere. W3C lists BiDi as a Working Draft dated 16 September 2026; draft status means the specification may change. See the W3C WebDriver BiDi publication.

What is the difference between WebDriver BiDi and CDP?
CDP is the Chrome DevTools Protocol. WebDriver BiDi is a W3C bidirectional protocol developed with browser vendors, with cross-browser support as its direction. Selenium describes CDP support as temporary as BiDi implementations develop; that does not mean BiDi already matches CDP feature-for-feature or is available in every browser and binding.
Choose based on the target browser, language binding, and the events or controls your test needs. Check the relevant feature documentation before committing to a protocol, particularly if your test depends on network or logging events. The Selenium BiDi guide describes current implementation areas.

What is the latest Selenium 4 release?
There is no single version number that should be assumed to apply identically to every language binding. Selenium’s release index changes over time, and binding package versions can differ. Check the Selenium releases and project updates and the package or API page for your language before pinning a version or copying commands. The Python API page identified itself as Selenium 4.50.0 when checked on 3 October 2026; that is a Python-page version, not a universal version claim.

If your goal is a website screenshot rather than browser automation, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its documented API options and response details are in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Can Selenium 4 run tests without a browser window?
The material covered here establishes browser control and local or remote execution, but does not specify a headless-mode setup. Consult the current documentation for your browser and language binding.
