No ordinary smartphone can show you what is behind an opaque wall. Wi-Fi research systems have detected movement and, in controlled experiments, inferred simple shapes through walls—but they use specialized radio hardware and signal processing, not a standard phone camera app. If you want to locate a stud before drilling, use a stud finder; a phone magnetometer may offer limited clues from metal fasteners.
Can a smartphone see through a wall?
No. A phone camera needs light from the scene to reach its lens, and an opaque wall blocks that light. A phone’s ordinary sensors do not turn it into an X-ray camera.

Some radio signals can pass through non-metallic walls, reflect off objects, and return. But extracting useful information from those weak reflections is a different task from taking a photograph. The documented demonstrations use purpose-built RF setups and substantial processing.

What Wi-Fi sensing can—and cannot—show
Detecting movement with Wi-Vi
MIT’s Wi-Vi prototype used low-power Wi-Fi reflections to detect moving people behind walls or closed doors. Because the wall and stationary objects create stronger reflections than a person, the system used two transmitting antennas and cancellation techniques to suppress much of that static background. The associated paper describes a system built and tested with software-defined radios in the 2.4 GHz ISM band; its outputs included the number and relative locations of people and recognition of simple gestures, not ordinary photographic images. MIT’s 2013 overview of Wi-Vi and the MIT/ACM paper describe the prototype.

Reading simple shapes in a controlled experiment
A 2023 UC Santa Barbara report described a method that used Wi-Fi to image and read English alphabet shapes through walls. The experiments used three off-the-shelf Wi-Fi transmitters in test areas, together with a specialized method for processing the measurements. The work was presented at IEEE RadarConf on June 21, 2023. It demonstrates what a research setup can infer under controlled conditions; it does not show that a router and smartphone can reveal a detailed room. UC Santa Barbara’s report explains the experiment.
These results are not evidence of a general-purpose consumer app that gives a regular phone through-wall vision. Radio sensing depends on the hardware arrangement, wall materials, geometry, clutter, and what the target is doing.

What phone-based alternatives can detect
Magnetometer apps: clues from metal, not wood
A phone magnetometer measures magnetic fields. An app may detect a ferrous screw or nail in a wall and help you infer where a stud is fastened, but the sensor does not directly detect wood. Results depend on the handset, wall composition, target depth, and nearby metal. Treat this as a rough aid rather than a reliable wall scan or a safety check before drilling. The cited App Store listing describes these limitations for its app.

A thermal imager measures infrared energy from the surface it faces. Pointed at a wall, it shows the wall’s temperature pattern—not a thermal picture of the room on the other side. A hidden object can sometimes affect the surface temperature indirectly, but that does not amount to seeing through the wall. FLIR explains the distinction.

How to locate a stud before drilling
For finding framing, use a dedicated electronic stud finder rather than expecting a phone to image behind the wall. Compare the tool’s sensing approach, stated detection depth, and compatibility with your wall type; plaster and tile can affect how a tool performs. Follow the model’s calibration and scanning instructions, and confirm the location before drilling.
As one model-specific example, Franklin Sensors’ instructions specify detection depths of up to 1.5 inches for the ProSensor T6/T62 and up to 1.6 inches for the T9. These are manufacturer specifications for those models, not independent test results or a guarantee for every wall. The same instructions describe sensing material density. See Franklin Sensors’ instructions.

Which option fits the job?
| Option | What it can do | What to compare | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone magnetometer app | May detect ferrous fasteners and help infer a stud location | Phone sensor, wall material and thickness, calibration, and nearby metal | Does not sense wood directly or show the space behind the wall |
| Electronic stud finder | Locates framing or density changes beneath the wall surface | Sensing approach, stated depth, compatibility with plaster or tile, and calibration | Locates material near the surface; does not provide through-wall vision |
| Research RF setup | Can detect movement or infer limited shapes under controlled conditions | RF hardware, antenna layout, processing method, target movement, and wall material | Not a normal phone app or a consumer visual-imaging capability |
| Thermal imager | Maps surface-temperature differences | Resolution, temperature sensitivity, and device compatibility | Measures the wall surface, not the hidden scene |
