Intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) monitor networks, wireless traffic, hosts, or network behavior; endpoint detection and response (EDR) investigates activity on devices; firewalls control connections; and web application firewalls (WAFs) analyze requests to websites and apps. Some tools alert or log, while others can block or contain activity. No single category sees everything.
What counts as a security tool for suspicious activity?
Security tools observe activity in a defined environment, look for indicators or patterns that may be suspicious, and provide information or actions to help respond. The key distinction is that detection and prevention are separate capabilities: a tool may report an event without blocking it, and blocking may depend on configuration, available features, or the type of traffic.

NIST’s 2007 Guide to Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems describes IDPS as systems that identify possible incidents, log information, attempt to stop activity, and report it. It groups IDPS into four classes. NIST’s later revision draft was retired and never finalized, so the 2007 publication remains the cited final guidance.

| Tool category | What it monitors | Typical role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network-based IDPS | Traffic moving across a network segment | Detects or attempts to prevent suspicious network activity | Coverage depends on where sensors are deployed and what traffic they can observe. |
| Wireless IDPS | Wireless network activity | Identifies suspicious wireless events | It focuses on wireless activity rather than all endpoint or application behavior. |
| Network behavior analysis | Network traffic patterns and behavior | Identifies activity that may be abnormal for the network | It analyzes network behavior; it is not a complete record of every device action. |
| Host-based IDPS | Activity on an individual host or device | Detects possible incidents on the monitored system | Coverage is tied to the hosts where it is installed or otherwise able to observe activity. |
| Endpoint detection and response (EDR) | Endpoint telemetry and alerts | Supports investigation and response to endpoint threats | Features, response actions, and coverage vary by product and plan; EDR is not necessarily a full audit log. |
| Firewall or network protection | Connections or traffic crossing a network or host boundary | Allows or blocks traffic according to rules and settings | Filtering is not the same as comprehensive detection of activity inside a device or application. |
| Web application firewall (WAF) detections | Requests sent to a website or application | Analyzes incoming requests and may support rules or responses | Capabilities and detection fields depend on the WAF and its configuration. |
NIST also describes SIEM as a complementary technology: it can help collect and analyze security information, but it is not a replacement for choosing sensors or response controls that cover the assets in question.

How do you choose between detection and blocking?
Start with the asset and activity you need to protect, then check what the tool can observe and what it can do with a finding. A detection may appear as an alert or log entry; prevention may require a separate mode, rule, or response action.
- For traffic entering or crossing a network: consider a network-based IDPS or firewall, and confirm the relevant traffic passes through the inspection point.
- For activity on computers or servers: consider host-based monitoring or EDR. Confirm which endpoints are covered and which investigation or response actions are included.
- For suspicious wireless activity: consider a wireless IDPS with visibility into the wireless environment.
- For abnormal network patterns: network behavior analysis may add useful context, particularly when investigating connections between systems.
- For requests to a website or application: consider WAF detections and rules that apply to the site’s traffic and application profile.
Before enabling automatic blocking, find out whether the tool supports an audit or alert-only mode. Microsoft, for example, documents audit and block modes for its Network Protection feature; that is a product-specific example, not a guarantee that every firewall or IDPS uses the same modes. Audit events can help assess how rules behave before enforcement, while block mode can interrupt traffic that matches the configured protection.

Microsoft also notes technical conditions that affect inspection of HTTPS connections in some non-Edge processes. Encrypted traffic should not be assumed to be inspected identically in every process or captured in every network event record. See Microsoft’s Network Protection documentation for the product-specific behavior and configuration details.
What can EDR tell you—and what can it do?
EDR uses endpoint telemetry and alerts to support investigation and response. Microsoft describes its Defender for Endpoint capabilities as a way to investigate and respond to threats, but says the product is not intended to record every operation or activity on an endpoint. Its documentation lists response actions for specific plans, including scanning, isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and blocking or allowing a file indicator. These are Microsoft-specific capabilities, and availability depends on the plan; check the current EDR overview and response documentation for current details.

When evaluating an EDR tool, check endpoint coverage, the telemetry and alerts it provides, available response actions, plan limits, and how an alert is investigated. EDR can complement network monitoring rather than replace it: device-level evidence and network-level evidence may reveal different parts of an incident.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why combine network and host monitoring?
An event on one device may be connected to activity elsewhere on the network. CISA’s January 11, 2022 alert on Russian state-sponsored threats to U.S. critical infrastructure recommends investigating abnormal activity using network monitoring and host-based logs and monitoring tools such as EDR. It notes that these layers can help identify lateral connections. This recommendation is framed for the critical-infrastructure threat context addressed by the alert, not as an endorsement of a particular product. See CISA’s alert.
Network firewalls and routers can filter traffic and log blocked connections, making a hardware firewall router one possible category for network-level controls. That category alone does not establish that a particular consumer router includes IDPS or any specific detection capability. Check a device’s official specifications, update support, compatibility, and configuration requirements rather than assuming features from its label.

How can WAF traffic detections help?
A WAF focuses on application requests, which is a different view from endpoint or general network monitoring. Cloudflare documents traffic detections that classify incoming requests and can be reviewed in Security Analytics or used in rule expressions. This describes Cloudflare’s implementation, not a universal feature of every WAF. Its traffic detections documentation, updated September 8, 2026, explains the available detections and their use.
For a WAF, check whether its detections fit the application and traffic you need to analyze, how rules are configured, and whether a rule only reports a match or takes action. A WAF does not by itself provide a complete view of device activity or all network behavior.
What should you compare before deploying a tool?
- Coverage: Which devices, network segments, wireless environments, or applications are monitored?
- Visibility: Which events and traffic can it actually inspect, including relevant encrypted connections?
- Response: Does it alert, log, block, isolate, or offer another response action? Which actions are automatic versus manual?
- False positives: Can you review matches in an audit or alert-only mode and adjust rules before enforcement?
- Investigation: What information is retained, for how long, and does it support the investigation you need?
- Compatibility and upkeep: Does it work with your devices and network design, and what configuration, maintenance, and updates does it require?
- Plan limits: Are the needed sensors, telemetry, or response actions included in the product edition or subscription?
There is no basis in the cited sources for ranking these categories or vendors in a current independent benchmark. Compare tools against the specific assets and activity you need to monitor, rather than treating a category name as proof of protection.
