Security Threats Don’t Stop at the Office: Why Executives’ Families Need Cybersecurity Training

Executives’ families can be drawn into impersonation attempts. A short household routine for verifying requests, protecting account codes, and separating work devices can help reduce avoidable risk.

Executives’ families can be drawn into impersonation attempts aimed at senior officials. In a 2025 alert, the FBI described campaigns using texts and AI-generated voice messages to impersonate senior U.S. officials and target their family members and personal acquaintances. That does not mean every executive household is being targeted; it does show why relatives should know how to verify unusual requests before responding.

The aim is not to turn family members into security specialists. It is to teach a few practical habits: pause when a request feels urgent, verify identity through a known channel, protect account codes, and keep household activity separate from work data. The federal guidance below is U.S.-focused; executives should also follow their employer’s policies.

Why do executives’ families need cybersecurity training too?

A relative’s personal phone, email, or messaging account can give an impersonator a route to someone connected to an executive. The FBI’s 2025 alert describes malicious messaging campaigns targeting senior U.S. officials’ family members and personal acquaintances, including by text and AI-generated voice messages. It says the activity dates back to at least 2023, but does not provide a prevalence figure that would show how often executive families are targeted.

The useful takeaway is narrower: a familiar name, voice, or caller ID is not proof of identity. Social engineering can use a convincing story or urgent request to prompt someone to share information, send money, provide an account code, or approve a login. Household training helps relatives recognize those pressure tactics and know what to do next.

Teach one routine for unusual messages and requests

Agree on a simple pause-and-verify routine that applies to texts, email, calls, and newly used messaging platforms. The FBI recommends independently confirming new contact information through a previously trusted source and agreeing on a family secret word or phrase.

  1. Pause. Treat unexpected urgency, secrecy, or a request for money, account access, a one-time code, or sensitive information as a reason to stop and check.
  2. Verify independently. Contact the person using a number or account already known to the family—not the new number, link, or contact details in the suspicious message.
  3. Keep codes private. Never send a two-factor authentication code in a message or give it to someone who asks for it. Do not approve a login prompt you did not initiate.
  4. Use the family phrase if needed. A pre-agreed secret word or phrase can help check a claim made in an unexpected call, but it should not replace contacting the person through a known channel.
  5. Wait before acting. Independently confirm requests involving money or assets before transferring anything or changing account access.

For messages that appear to come from a company or online service, do not follow an unexpected link to sign in. Open the service using its known website or app, or verify the request through another trusted route. Avoid unexpected attachments and do not provide credentials, financial details, or personal information in response to an email request.

Protect household accounts and authentication

Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) on important accounts wherever it is available, especially email and messaging accounts that can be used to reset or access other services. The FBI notes that “Messaging apps are common targets for account takeover and social engineering.” Use each service’s available verification options, keep device passcodes private, and never share one-time codes or approve unexpected login requests.

A FIDO security key is one possible physical MFA factor for accounts that support it. The FBI recommends a security key or authenticator app when possible; CISA identifies hardware-based FIDO tokens as the most phishing-resistant option among those it discusses and describes app-based tokens as another good option.

MFA option What to check
Hardware FIDO security key Use only where the account supports that key type. CISA describes hardware FIDO tokens as the strongest phishing-resistant option among the options it discusses.
Authenticator app Use where supported; the FBI recommends an authenticator app when possible, and CISA describes app-based soft tokens as a good option.

Neither option works with every account, and an MFA method does not prevent every impersonation attempt. Check account compatibility and understand how to recover access if a key or phone is lost. Do not treat possession of a security key as a substitute for verifying an unexpected request.

Make personal devices and home Wi-Fi harder to misuse

  • Lock devices. Use a strong passcode or biometric lock on phones, tablets, and computers.
  • Update software. Install operating-system and app updates promptly; enable automatic updates when available.
  • Review app permissions. Check which applications can access personal data and remove access that is not needed.
  • Secure the router. Change its default administrator password, choose a network name that does not reveal unnecessary personal information, and use the strongest available Wi-Fi encryption.
  • Check connected devices. Review what is connected to the home network and remove devices that should no longer have access.
  • Back up and encrypt important data. Keep recoverable backup copies and use device encryption where available. CISA warns that data on a compromised device may be read, altered, stolen, or made inaccessible if it is not encrypted.

Keep work data off shared household devices

Household members should know which devices contain corporate data and should not use them unless the employer’s policy permits it. CISA’s Safeguarding Your Data page, revised September 27, 2019, says to avoid allowing other people, including family members, to use a computer containing corporate data. It describes separate user accounts as an additional protection and separate computers as another option; separate accounts do not fully isolate data.

Use employer-managed devices and support channels as directed, and follow the organization’s current device and data-handling rules. If a family member receives a suspicious message connected to an executive’s business identity or work, they should know the organization’s actual reporting route. The company must provide that channel; do not guess where to report it.

Keep training brief, specific, and repeatable

A household conversation can focus on the actions relatives are most likely to need: how to verify an unexpected request, what information or codes never to share, how to report a suspicious work-related message, and which devices are off-limits for household use. Practice the verification routine with a harmless example so everyone knows whom to contact and which channel is trusted.

CISA-led ransomware guidance recommends training personnel to identify and report suspicious activity, including phishing, and to address advanced social engineering for people with network access. For families, the practical lesson is to make the response clear and easy to remember—not to transfer sensitive work details or responsibility for corporate security to relatives.
