Neither project can be declared the lighter one on current public evidence. Both have documented small starting points: SeaweedFS has weed mini, and RustFS has a single-node, single-disk (SNSD) mode. No matched, current test of RAM and CPU for the two systems under the same workload and durability settings turned up. A small footprint wins only when the small setup also meets your interface and data-protection needs, and you have measured it on your own hardware.
How the two compare on the points that decide small deployments
| Decision axis | SeaweedFS | RustFS |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest start | The project repository describes weed mini as a way to bring the stack up on a laptop. |
Documents a single-node, single-disk container deployment for development, testing and small-scale use. |
| Architecture | Master servers track volume locations and assign file IDs; volume servers hold data; other interfaces sit alongside. | Decentralized peer-to-peer design; nodes are equal and data is organized in sets of drives. |
| Memory controls | Default volume index is in memory, estimated at about 20 bytes per file; LevelDB index options reduce memory with a stated tradeoff. | No per-object memory estimate found. Hardware guidance is published as fixed minima, and two official pages disagree. |
| Redundancy | Replication and erasure coding are available; protection depends on how you configure them. | SNSD has no erasure coding and no added redundancy. Multi-drive and multi-node modes are documented separately. |
| Interfaces | S3, plus filesystem and Iceberg use cases. | S3 compatibility; recommends standard AWS S3 SDKs. |
A quick start says little about production sizing, and an architecture label says little about RAM. Compare the components you must run, the topology, monitoring and failure handling, not just whether a process starts.

What RustFS’s small mode gives you, and what it does not
RustFS’s SNSD mode is the smallest documented configuration. The backend uses no erasure coding and no extra data redundancy, so a disk failure means data loss unless you have backups. The documentation positions it for local testing, development and low-criticality scenarios. If you want protection, RustFS’s installation guidance describes separate multi-drive and multi-node modes, which change the footprint.
RustFS documentation also states that “in both distributed and single-machine modes, all read and write operations strictly follow the read-after-write consistency model” (RustFS Architecture documentation). That is a useful guarantee for applications that read immediately after writing.

RustFS’s published hardware numbers conflict
| Official page | Testing | Production |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware selection | 1 core, 1 GB memory | 64 GB memory, four or more nodes |
| Installation guide | At least 2 GB | 128 GB |
Treat these as page-specific recommendations, not a reconciled standard. They are guidance for sizing, not measured consumption. Both pages list HDD or SSD as test storage options.
SeaweedFS’s memory-versus-index tradeoff
SeaweedFS’s optimization wiki says the volume server keeps its index in memory by default and estimates about 20 bytes per file. For a store with many small files, that scales with object count, not with total bytes stored. The wiki describes LevelDB-based index options that cut memory use, at a cost in access and startup behavior. The guidance is dated 2024-11-18, so check it against the release you deploy. The same page notes that adding hard drives can raise throughput.

As a rough illustration of that estimate: 100 million files would imply around 2 GB for the default index alone. This is arithmetic from the wiki’s figure, not a measurement, and it excludes the rest of the process.
Why the available benchmark doesn’t settle footprint
A RustFS community post dated 2026-01-14 reports multi-node throughput involving RustFS 1.0.0-alpha.79 and SeaweedFS 4.02. It is project-hosted, covers throughput, and gives no matched RAM or CPU figures. It cannot say which system uses fewer resources. The RustFS version named there is an alpha, so results may have changed since.

When a tiny footprint wins
- Disposable or reproducible data. Development, CI fixtures, caches and local S3 stand-ins. Here RustFS SNSD or a minimal SeaweedFS setup is reasonable, with backups for anything you cannot regenerate.
- A single small host with a clear backup path. A small footprint is a real advantage when the host is the constraint, but one disk is not a redundancy plan.
- Few, large objects. Per-file index memory matters little, so SeaweedFS’s index cost is unlikely to dominate.
- Edge sites with simple S3 needs. Inventory the exact API calls and SDK behavior your application uses, then test against the specific versions.
When it does not win
- You need failure tolerance. Replication, erasure coding or multi-node RustFS all add disks, nodes and RAM, which erodes the minimal-footprint advantage.
- You have hundreds of millions of small files and the default SeaweedFS index. Plan for index memory or a LevelDB option.
- You need filesystem or Iceberg access from the same store. SeaweedFS documents those; RustFS documentation reviewed here describes S3.
How to measure it yourself
- Pin exact versions of both systems and record them.
- Use the same hardware, the same disk type and the same durability setting. Do not compare RustFS SNSD with replicated SeaweedFS.
- Load a dataset shaped like yours: object count, size distribution and key layout.
- Drive it with your real S3 client and realistic concurrency.
- Record idle memory, memory under load, memory after restart, CPU under load and startup time. For SeaweedFS, repeat with a LevelDB index.
- Kill a process and a disk, then see what survives and how long recovery takes.
When provisioning drives, choose by capacity, workload and the redundancy you actually configure. A NAS-rated drive does not make a single-disk deployment fault tolerant.
Commercial option for SeaweedFS
SeaweedFS Enterprise advertises data recovery, point-in-time recovery, self-healing, automatic erasure-coding repair and support as a licensed offering. That is relevant if you outgrow a hobby setup, but it is a commercial product with its own terms.
