Seattle’s Inconvenience Store is an art exhibition staged inside a former 7-Eleven, not a conventional shop for useful gadgets. Its handmade artworks mimic and subvert everyday merchandise, including pre-tangled USB cords and a landline-style “iPhone” that plays U2’s “Vertigo” when answered.
What is Seattle’s Inconvenience Store?
Located in a former convenience store at 1524 Third Avenue in downtown Seattle, the exhibition arranges artworks like goods in a corner shop: on shelves, at a checkout counter, in a refrigerator case and at a hot-food counter. UPI described the pieces as “abstracted interpretations” of ordinary store goods. The familiar retail setting is part of the point: visitors can browse and see prices without the formality they may associate with a gallery.

Artists Lilia Deering and Mary Anne Carter created the project. Their earlier project, STÖR, parodied an IKEA showroom; this exhibition borrows the visual language of the neighborhood convenience store instead. In a statement attributed to the organizers as a group, they said: “Art is inherently inconvenient. In a society that rewards efficiency and mass production, artists do things the hard way.”

These are artworks in the exhibition, not evidence that equivalent practical products are stocked or recommended. UBStandard reported prices from $1 to $10,000, with artist Emma Kates-Shaw’s hand-encrusted lighter cases listed at around $65. Those are outlet-reported prices and may change; the reports do not establish a complete price list or current availability for individual pieces.
Why put art in a convenience-store setting?
The organizers use a recognizable retail format to make browsing and buying art feel more approachable: visitors encounter visible prices and familiar displays rather than a traditional gallery presentation. The project carries forward Deering and Carter’s interest in turning an everyday commercial space into an art experience, but with convenience-store merchandise as its frame rather than an IKEA-inspired showroom.

UBStandard reported that STÖR drew more than 10,000 visitors and generated over $50,000 in sales across roughly 800 households during its three-month run. Those figures are attributed to that outlet’s 2026 reporting; its account does not identify an original dataset.
