The Seagate Storage Expansion Card is a strong fit if you want to install more Xbox Series X|S games and play Series X|S-optimized titles directly from the added storage. Its main drawbacks are its Xbox-only compatibility and the price premium over USB storage, which can hold optimized games but cannot run them directly. Whether it is worth buying depends on whether direct play and easy setup matter more to you than flexibility and cost.
What the Seagate expansion card does
The card plugs into the dedicated expansion slot on an Xbox Series X or Series S. Seagate says the console recognizes it without extra setup or formatting. Its key difference from a USB drive is that it can run Series X|S-optimized games directly.

Xbox says the card maintains the internal SSD’s peak speed and performance. That is Xbox’s product claim, not an independent test. Xbox Wire’s 2020 technical explanation gives the console’s custom internal SSD raw I/O throughput of 2.4 GB/s; that figure describes the internal SSD architecture, not a separately measured card-versus-console result. | Factor | Seagate expansion card | USB storage |
|---|---|---|
| Play optimized Series X|S games from the storage | Yes | No; move the game to internal storage or an expansion card before playing |
| Setup | Insert in the console’s expansion slot; Seagate says no additional setup or formatting is required | Useful for storage and legacy games; consult the drive and console instructions for setup |
| Compatibility beyond Series X|S | Seagate says it does not work with Xbox One or PC | Can be useful with other devices, depending on the drive, formatting, and device requirements |
| Cost | A 2026 GamesRadar+ buying guide describes it as one of the pricier options; check current retailer pricing by capacity | Often a more economical choice for archiving or legacy games, but compare the drive and capacity you actually need |
Where the card is strongest
- Direct play: Keep optimized games on added storage and launch them without moving them back to the console’s internal SSD.
- Simple installation: Use the expansion slot rather than connecting and configuring a separate USB drive.
- Console-to-console portability: Seagate says the card can be moved between Xbox Series X|S consoles. Access to each game still depends on its normal disc or account license.
- Capacity choices: Xbox’s product page lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options; regional availability can vary.
Where it falls short
- Limited device compatibility: It is designed for Xbox Series X|S, not as a general-purpose PC or Xbox One drive.
- Cost: The convenience and direct-play capability come at a price that can be higher than USB storage. Prices change by retailer and capacity, so check current listings rather than relying on an old figure.
- Not the only direct-play expansion card: GamesRadar+’s August 5, 2026 buying guide also covers the WD_BLACK C50. Compare current capacity, price, and availability before choosing.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Option | Best for | Can run optimized Series X|S games directly? | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seagate Storage Expansion Card | Adding space for games you want ready to play | Yes | Xbox Series X|S-specific use; compare current price and capacity |
| USB hard drive or SSD | Archiving optimized games or playing legacy titles | No | Can be a lower-cost or more flexible storage choice, but optimized games must be transferred before play |
| WD_BLACK C50 expansion card | Another expansion-card option for direct play | Expansion cards are the direct-play category; confirm the current model’s details before purchase | Compare current capacity, price, and availability with the Seagate card |
The right comparison is not simply “SSD versus hard drive.” Decide whether you need direct play, how much capacity you need, whether you want to move storage between consoles, and whether you would use the drive for anything beyond Xbox. Xbox’s product page lists capacities; the GamesRadar+ buying guide discusses the C50 alternative.

Compatibility, capacity and warranty details
Xbox lists the Seagate card for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Seagate states that it is not compatible with Xbox One or PC. The Xbox product page lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities; check local listings because availability can differ by region.
Seagate’s 2025 data sheet lists a three-year limited warranty for its 1TB and 2TB models, identified as STJR1000400 and STJR2000400. The cited data sheet does not establish that warranty term for the 4TB model, so check that model’s regional warranty terms separately. Seagate 2025 data sheet
