Rare’s published PC storage requirement for Sea of Thieves is 60 GB, but that figure comes from a system-requirements page last updated June 22, 2023—not a measurement of the game’s current installed size. Update downloads are separate and vary by platform. On Xbox Series X|S, the game must launch from the console’s internal SSD or an expanded high-speed SSD; a standard external HDD is no longer compatible.
How much space does Sea of Thieves take up?
For PC, Rare lists 60 GB of drive capacity for every performance tier on its PC system requirements page. The page was last updated June 22, 2023, so treat 60 GB as Rare’s published requirement at that time, not a verified current install size or a guarantee of how much free space an installation will need today.

That same requirements page pairs the storage figure with different drive specifications by performance tier, ranging from a 5.2K RPM HDD at the lowest tier to SSD for higher tiers. Its other hardware and operating-system targets are also part of a dated requirements listing, not independently verified current recommendations.

How big is the Sea of Thieves download?
A patch download is not the full game. Rare’s Season 20 release notes for version 3.8.0 list the following download sizes for that update only:
| Platform or storefront | Season 20 (3.8.0) update download |
|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 3.66 GB |
| Xbox Series S | 3.21 GB |
| Xbox One X | 2.6 GB |
| Xbox One | 3.21 GB |
| Microsoft Store on PC | 2.7 GB |
| Steam on PC | 3.3 GB |
| PlayStation 5 | 1.66 GB |
| Battle.net on PC | 14 GB |
These are version-specific patch download figures published in Rare’s 3.8.0 release notes. They do not state the complete installed size, and later updates may have different download sizes. Do not add a patch figure to the 60 GB PC requirement to estimate a current total.
