SDK Retries: Why Requests Still Repeat After You Turn Them Off

An SDK may retry failures even when you expected retries to be off. Learn how to count attempts, check client settings, and trace other retry layers.

Yes, an SDK can make two retries by default—up to three total attempts when you count the original request. But the title alone does not identify which SDK made the attempts. Check the installed client’s retry option and configuration, then look for a separate retry layer such as authentication refresh or application middleware.

What “two retries” means

A retry is an attempt made after the initial request fails. In ordinary usage, two retries can therefore mean as many as three total attempts: the original request plus two more. Some libraries instead define a maximum-attempts setting that includes the original request, so check the terminology and counting rule in the documentation for your specific SDK.

That distinction matters when you inspect logs: three requests do not necessarily mean the client retried three times.

Could the SDK be retrying by default?

For the official OpenAI Python and Node SDKs, the documented default is two retries for specified failures. OpenAI’s rate-limit guide also says official SDKs retry eligible HTTP 429 and 503 responses subject to their retry settings. These examples do not establish what an unnamed SDK or a different installed version did.

SDK or guidance Documented setting and behavior What to check
OpenAI Python SDK max_retries; documented default of 2. The README lists connection errors and HTTP 408, 409, 429, and 500-or-higher responses. OpenAI Python README Set max_retries=0 on the client that sends the request.
OpenAI Node SDK maxRetries; documented default of 2 for temporary connection errors and HTTP 408, 409, 429, and 500-or-higher responses. OpenAI Node configuration guide Set maxRetries: 0 on the request-making client.
AWS SDK configuration guidance max_attempts counts the initial request. In the documented standard mode, the default is 3 attempts; AWS notes behavior can depend on an opt-in setting and SDK. AWS retry behavior reference For this documented AWS configuration, client settings take precedence over environment variables, which take precedence over shared config and SDK defaults. Do not assume another library uses the same option or precedence.
OpenAI Java ClientOptions 4.36.0 The versioned reference documents maxRetries with a default of 2. OpenAI Java ClientOptions 4.36.0 reference This applies to the cited version; it does not identify the SDK in your application.

How to find and disable the retry you are seeing

  1. Identify the caller. Find the exact SDK, language, installed version, and client instance responsible for the request. An application may create multiple clients with different options.
  2. Use that SDK’s documented option. In the cited OpenAI Python README, the option is max_retries; in the Node guide, it is maxRetries. Both document zero as disabling ordinary SDK retries. Apply the setting to the client that actually issues the request, not just an unrelated client or a configuration object that is never used.
  3. Check which configuration wins. Inspect the effective client configuration and any environment or shared configuration. Precedence varies: AWS explicitly documents client configuration over environment variables, then shared config and SDK defaults. That hierarchy is not universal.
  4. Inspect other retry layers. Look for application retry middleware, an HTTP transport, a wrapper, or authentication behavior. The OpenAI Node guide documents a separate workload-identity credential-refresh path that can retry a replayable request after HTTP 401. That is distinct from its ordinary retry setting.
  5. Correlate attempts. Compare request identifiers, status codes, timestamps, SDK logs, and application logs. This helps distinguish a retried request from separate application calls and identify which layer issued each attempt.

Why a request may repeat after ordinary retries are disabled

A zero retry setting controls only the behavior covered by that setting. It does not necessarily disable a separate authentication refresh, middleware policy, or retry in another client or transport. For example, the Node credential-refresh case described above is limited to a replayable request after a 401; do not assume it explains every repeated request or applies to other SDKs.

Retries can also amplify traffic when more than one layer retries independently. OpenAI’s rate-limit guide advises developers managing retries in their own application to disable SDK retries or account for both layers. It notes that unsuccessful requests count toward per-minute limits. OpenAI API rate limits

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

The documented OpenAI defaults make two retries a plausible explanation if the application uses the cited SDK behavior and the failure qualifies. They do not prove that the title’s request came from OpenAI, identify its language or version, or reveal whether the observed attempts came from the SDK, authentication refresh, or another layer. The decisive evidence is the installed client’s effective configuration and logs showing what happened for each attempt.
