A timing screenshot shows a number, but not enough context to judge it. Hardware, operating system, compiler and flags, warm-up policy, repeat count, and run-to-run variation can all affect how a benchmark should be interpreted. A tutorial from compilersutra presents csperf as a way to save that context in shareable files rather than relying on a screenshot alone.
Why a benchmark screenshot is incomplete
A displayed time is an observation, not a reproducible account of how it was produced. Without the machine and software configuration, another person cannot tell whether a difference reflects the code, a different compiler setup, or other conditions. A single value also hides whether it came from one run or many, and whether the measurements clustered tightly or varied substantially.

The tutorial puts the distinction this way: “The screenshot is the observation; the artifact is the full experimental protocol.” The useful point is not that an artifact makes every comparison fair; it is that it gives a team more of the information needed to evaluate the claim.

What the csperf tutorial demonstrates
A compilersutra tutorial describes a command-line workflow that records a C++ benchmark run and saves structured output. Its commands are examples from that page, not independently verified current syntax or a guarantee that the package still supports the same options:
#1 Best Overall
- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient

Install the package with the tutorial’s example command:
pip install csperf. -
Run the C++ example using the CPU backend, one warm-up, five repeated runs, and JSON output. The tutorial shows a

What to include when you share a result
Publish the artifact alongside the performance claim, and make clear what it records. When comparing two runs, inspect these fields rather than treating an exported file as automatic proof of a fair test:
-
Machine or hardware identity and operating system.
-
Compiler version and flags, plus the backend used.
-
Warm-up policy and number of measured repetitions.
-
The measurements’ distribution or spread, not only a headline average.

- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.

These details are necessary context, not sufficient controls. In particular, matching recorded fields does not by itself establish that results from different machines are directly comparable. For a team workflow, the tutorial recommends setting warm-up and repeat counts, keeping artifacts in a version-controlled directory, and publishing the artifact with the claim. It also suggests comparing runs made with different compilers; treat that as a comparison to interpret carefully, not a conclusion that compiler identity is the only changed variable.
How to read the tutorial’s sample numbers
In its example, compilersutra reports a 5.1714 ms mean, with a 5.161 ms minimum and 5.191 ms maximum, from five repetitions after one warm-up on an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X using clang++ 18.1.3. These are values reported for that tutorial example, not an independent measurement, a benchmark of csperf itself, or a general performance baseline. The page header gives a September 27 date without a year, so the date cannot establish when the example was run or whether the commands remain current.

When an artifact helps—and what it cannot prove
A structured record is most useful when a performance claim needs review later, when teammates need to inspect run conditions, or when someone wants to compare multiple runs rather than pass around one cropped image. It makes the claim more inspectable; it does not guarantee a controlled experiment, remove environmental noise, or make unlike machines interchangeable.
Use csperf only after confirming its current installation and command behavior for your environment. The available account is a single nonofficial tutorial, so its workflow and reported output should be understood as that author’s example rather than verified product documentation.
