First check whether the response is actually an API error image: inspect the image for text and read the X-Screenshotmachine-Response header. If neither indicates an API error, test rendering settings such as delay, viewport, device, crop, and selectors one at a time.
1. Check whether the image is an API error
ScreenshotMachine documents that invalid or incomplete API calls can return an image containing an error message, alongside an X-Screenshotmachine-Response header with an error code. Read both before treating the output as an empty webpage. See the ScreenshotMachine API documentation.

Documented response codes include:
missing_keyorinvalid_key: the customer key is missing or not accepted.missing_urlorinvalid_url: the target URL is missing, malformed, or may require authorization.invalid_hash: the hash does not match the configured secret phrase and URL.no_credits: the account has no available credits.invalid_selectororinvalid_crop: a selector or crop setting is not valid.system_error: the service reports a system error.
Do not publish or share an API key or secret phrase while investigating.
2. Validate the request and credentials
- Confirm the request includes both the required customer
keyand targeturl. - Check that the key is current and the URL is complete and correctly encoded.
- If you configured a secret phrase, recalculate the request hash for that URL and phrase; an incorrect hash is a documented error.
- Check the account for available credits if the response code is
no_credits.
An invalid_url response does not necessarily mean the address has a typo: ScreenshotMachine also documents authorization requirements as a possible reason.

3. Give the page more time to render
The API’s delay setting controls how long it waits before capture. The documented default is 200 ms, and the permitted range is 0–10,000 ms. For long pages with images or animations, ScreenshotMachine suggests considering a delay of 2000 ms or more. This is a setting to test, not a guarantee that waiting will fix every blank result.
Make a fresh capture with a longer delay, leaving other request parameters unchanged. If that changes the output, adjust the wait to suit the page rather than assuming one value works for every site.

4. Check device, viewport, crop, and selectors
ScreenshotMachine supports desktop, phone, and tablet capture, as well as configurable dimensions. Its documentation lists widths of 100–1920 px and heights of 100–9999 px or full. A page may render differently at a mobile viewport than on desktop, so compare using the device and dimensions that match the layout you intend to capture.
- Temporarily remove a crop or element selector to see whether it excludes the visible content.
- Check selector spelling if the response includes
invalid_selector; check the crop parameters forinvalid_crop. - Keep the URL and other settings fixed while changing one option, so you can tell which change affects the result.
5. Handle consent banners and popups
A consent banner or popup can obscure the page rather than make it fail to load. ScreenshotMachine provides a click selector to activate an element before capture and a hide selector to remove an element from the shot. The vendor describes these options as useful for cookie banners and popups. Verify that each selector matches the page, and percent-encode reserved characters such as # when they appear in query parameters. Details are in the API documentation and screenshot generator.
6. Distinguish an empty page render from a failed request
If the image is a valid image without error text and the response header does not identify a documented API error, compare the target URL in a normal browser, then make a fresh API capture with a standard viewport and a longer delay. A browser comparison can show whether the page itself appears empty, while a controlled API recapture helps isolate request settings.

ScreenshotMachine’s public documentation does not give a universal explanation for a genuinely blank render. The exact cause depends on the request and the target page, so do not infer a particular failure without those details.
7. Contact support with useful diagnostics
If the response remains unexplained, ScreenshotMachine lists [email protected] for service questions. Provide the response status, the X-Screenshotmachine-Response value, a redacted request with parameter values, and an example output. Include the target URL only if you can share it. Remove API keys and secret material.
