ScreenshotAPI Webhook Setup: Current Status and Synchronous Fallback

ScreenshotAPI’s docs say async callbacks are currently unavailable on this deployment. Learn what the intended webhook flow looks like, how its signature is verified, and what to use instead.

ScreenshotAPI’s async webhooks are currently unavailable on the documented deployment. Its API reference says webhook requests return HTTP 503 without charging a credit and recommends synchronous rendering instead. The reference also describes the intended webhook_url protocol for when storage is enabled, but that is not a working setup to rely on today. ScreenshotAPI API reference (accessed October 3, 2026).

What happens if you configure a webhook now?

According to ScreenshotAPI’s documentation, async callbacks are unavailable on this deployment. Requests that use the callback flow return HTTP 503 and do not charge a credit. The documentation’s present recommendation is synchronous rendering. This availability statement is specific to the deployment described in the reference accessed October 3, 2026; check the provider’s current documentation before building around a later change.

How the documented webhook flow is intended to work

The reference describes an asynchronous protocol for when storage is enabled. These details explain the intended design; they do not mean callbacks are currently available.

  1. Send a POST request to https://screenshotapis.org/v1/screenshot, authenticate with the X-Api-Key header, and set Content-Type: application/json.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Include the page url and your receiver’s webhook_url in the JSON body.

  3. The example immediate acknowledgement is HTTP 202 with a render_id, status set to processing, and the callback URL.

  4. When processing finishes, the service is intended to POST a result payload to the webhook URL.

The documented example request shape is:

POST https://screenshotapis.org/v1/screenshot
X-Api-Key: YOUR_API_KEY
Content-Type: application/json

{
  "url": "https://example.com",
  "webhook_url": "https://your-service.example/webhooks/screenshotapi"
}

The example completion payload includes render_id, success, url, content_type, render_time_ms, output_size_bytes, error, and a Unix-style timestamp. Use success and error to determine the outcome, and associate the callback with the original request using render_id. The result URL and output metadata are example fields, not a guarantee that a currently operational callback will deliver them.

How to verify the documented webhook signature

The reference says webhook POSTs include an X-Webhook-Signature header: an HMAC-SHA256 hexadecimal digest of the JSON body, signed using the API key. If callbacks become available, verify the signature before trusting or acting on the payload. Compute the digest from the exact raw request bytes received, not from a parsed-and-reserialized JSON object, and compare digests in constant time. Keep the API key server-side and never expose it in browser code or logs.

The reference’s verification approach in Python is:

import hashlib
import hmac

# raw_body must be the exact request bytes; api_key is kept secret.
expected = hmac.new(api_key.encode(), raw_body, hashlib.sha256).hexdigest()
valid = hmac.compare_digest(expected, received_signature)

Here, received_signature is the value of the X-Webhook-Signature header. Reject a callback if the header is missing or the comparison fails. The reference describes the signature scheme; it does not establish a retry policy or provide a complete receiver implementation.

What to use now: synchronous rendering

For the currently documented option, POST to /v1/screenshot and wait for the response. A successful screenshot response contains raw image bytes, rather than a webhook notification. The API reference says authentication can be supplied as X-Api-Key or a Bearer token. In your application, keep the request open until the response arrives, then handle the returned bytes as the screenshot output. See the ScreenshotAPI reference for the endpoint’s current request parameters and response details.

Choosing between the two modes

Mode Availability in the documented deployment How completion is delivered Authenticity check
Synchronous rendering Recommended current option Screenshot image bytes in the HTTP response API key authenticates the request; the reference does not describe a separate response-signature mechanism
Async webhook Currently unavailable; callback requests return HTTP 503 without charging a credit Intended 202 response followed by a result POST when storage is enabled Intended X-Webhook-Signature HMAC-SHA256 header, verified against the raw JSON body

If your goal is simply to get a screenshot through an API, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot endpoint; this is a separate service, not a way to enable ScreenshotAPI webhooks. For example, its cURL call is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
