Choose Puppeteer when you need to control a browser workflow in your own application; choose ScreenshotAPI when you want a hosted screenshot endpoint rather than operating that workflow yourself. Both document full-page capture, but available documentation does not establish a universal winner for speed, reliability, fidelity, or total cost. The deciding factors are how much browser control you need, what you must maintain, and how your actual pages behave.
How the two approaches differ
Puppeteer is a Node.js browser automation library: your code launches and drives a browser, navigates to a page, waits for a chosen condition, and captures an image. Its ScreenshotOptions API documents fullPage as a boolean that captures the full page when set to true; the default is false. The cited API reference is for Puppeteer 25.12.0. ScreenshotAPI is a hosted service. Its documentation advertises full-page capture, image output in JPEG, PNG, or WebP, and PDF output, along with configurable capture options. The feature list is the vendor’s documentation, not an independent parity test against Puppeteer. ScreenshotAPI documentation
In practical terms, Puppeteer gives you a browser workflow to customize and operate. ScreenshotAPI removes the need to run the capture browser yourself, but your request is limited to the service’s documented controls. Do not assume that matching option names mean identical behavior.
#1 Best Overall
Choose based on the browser control and operating work you need
| Decision | Puppeteer | ScreenshotAPI |
|---|---|---|
| How capture runs | Your application launches and controls a browser. | Your application calls a hosted screenshot API. |
| Full-page capture | Set fullPage: true; documented default is false. |
Full-page images are advertised in vendor documentation. |
| Page setup | Use browser automation code for navigation, waits, and other supported browser actions. | Documentation describes configurable options, including JavaScript or CSS injection and geolocation. |
| Formats and related output | Use Puppeteer’s screenshot API; see its API reference for supported options. | Vendor documentation lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, or PDF output. |
| Operational responsibility | You are responsible for integrating and operating browser automation in your application. | The vendor hosts the screenshot endpoint; you still need to integrate it and handle its responses. |
| Cost basis | Calculate your own hosting and operating costs for the workload. | The pricing page states its current offer; check the page because vendor pricing may change. |
Puppeteer is a stronger fit when the screenshot depends on custom browser actions or application-specific logic. A hosted API is a better fit when the workflow is primarily “send a URL, receive a capture” and the available service options cover the job. Neither choice is automatically cheaper: the comparison depends on your deployment, volume, operational effort, and required options.
Take a full-page screenshot with Puppeteer
The Puppeteer guide’s basic flow is to launch a browser, create a page, navigate with a wait condition, capture with Page.screenshot(), and close the browser. The example below uses networkidle2 as the navigation condition and sets fullPage: true explicitly. Puppeteer screenshots guide
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with your package manager, then run the script in an environment where its browser can launch. The exact installation and deployment requirements depend on your operating system and runtime; consult the Puppeteer documentation for current setup instructions.

waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is an example, not a guarantee that every page has finished rendering. Pages with long-lived requests, delayed images, client-side rendering, or content triggered by interaction may need a different readiness strategy. The supplied guide demonstrates navigation waiting, but it does not establish a universal wait condition for every site. Test the pages you actually capture and wait for the content that matters to your output.
Capture a particular element instead
If you need only a component rather than the whole document, Puppeteer’s guide also describes element-level screenshots with ElementHandle.screenshot(). Select the element after the page has reached the state you need, then capture that handle; this is a different task from a full-page screenshot. Puppeteer screenshots guide
Can ScreenshotAPI capture a full web page?
Yes. ScreenshotAPI’s documentation advertises full-page capture through its hosted API and lists image formats JPEG, PNG, and WebP, as well as PDF. It also describes JavaScript or CSS injection, geolocation, GET and POST integration, and fresh=true to request a current result instead of a cached screenshot. These are vendor-described capabilities; confirm the current documentation and test any option your workflow depends on. ScreenshotAPI documentation

Compare page readiness, reliability, and total cost on your workload
The available documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of ScreenshotAPI and Puppeteer on dynamic pages. Before committing, test representative sites, including any that use delayed content, authentication, or interactions. Check whether the captured page contains the expected content, whether the output dimensions and format meet your needs, and how failures are reported.

ScreenshotAPI’s pricing page currently states “First 100 shots are free, then $0.001/shot” and displays volume packages. Treat this as a vendor-published offer that can change, and verify the live pricing page before budgeting. That per-shot offer does not include a comparable calculation of your Puppeteer hosting and operating costs, so it does not prove that either option costs less overall. ScreenshotAPI pricing

The Puppeteer image shows only the initial viewport
Check that the screenshot call includes fullPage: true. The documented default is false, so omitting the option does not request a full-page capture. Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions
Content is missing from the screenshot
The page may not have reached the state your capture requires. Review the navigation wait condition, and determine whether the missing content loads later, requires scrolling, or appears only after an interaction. Test on the affected page rather than assuming one wait strategy fits all sites.
The browser does not close after an error
Put browser.close() in a finally block, as in the example, so cleanup runs if navigation or capture throws. In a long-running service, also handle failures at the job boundary so one failed page does not prevent later work from being processed.
A ScreenshotAPI capture is stale
ScreenshotAPI documents fresh=true as a way to request a current result instead of a cached screenshot. Check the current API documentation for the exact request syntax and behavior before relying on it. ScreenshotAPI documentation

You cannot tell which approach is more reliable
The available sources contain no controlled reliability benchmark. Run both approaches against the pages, authentication states, and interaction paths that matter to your application; record the results and failure handling in your own environment.

ScreenshotNeo offers a hosted screenshot API. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its API accepts URL and capture options; the example below requests a WebP capture of the target page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the complete options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes known cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
