ScreenshotAPI.net Timeout Errors on Slow Websites: Fixes

A focused guide to ScreenshotAPI.net timeouts: identify the actual error, choose the right wait behavior, and distinguish slow rendering from connectivity, TLS, quota, or service problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If ScreenshotAPI.net returns timeout_error (HTTP 408), first confirm that the response really is a timeout, then adjust the page-load timeout or wait behavior to fit the target site. For late content, add a modest delay after the chosen load event; for content that appears only after scrolling, enable lazy loading. A longer timeout will not fix an unreachable site, TLS failure, quota limit, or service outage.

Confirm you are using ScreenshotAPI.net

This guide is for ScreenshotAPI.net’s /v3/screenshot endpoint, documented as GET https://shot.screenshotapi.net/v3/screenshot. Its API key is passed as a token. Other services also use names like “Screenshot API,” but their endpoints and parameter names may differ; do not copy their timeout settings into a ScreenshotAPI.net request. See the ScreenshotAPI.net render documentation.

Read the error before changing the timeout

Capture both the HTTP status and the error code from the response. ScreenshotAPI.net documents timeout_error as HTTP 408: the request took longer than expected. Its error catalogue distinguishes this from conditions such as an aborted request, an unreachable address, a refused connection, network or tunnel failures, SSL/TLS errors, rate limits, quota errors, and temporary service errors. See ScreenshotAPI.net’s error list.

  • timeout_error / 408: Investigate how long the destination takes to render and whether your configured page timeout is too short.
  • request_aborted: The vendor says this may reflect a timeout, network issue, or manual cancellation. Check caller logs and target reachability; the code alone may not identify which layer stopped the request.
  • Connectivity or TLS error: Check the URL, redirects, public reachability, and the destination’s TLS configuration. Increasing the render timeout does not address these error classes.
  • 429, quota, or temporary service error: Address the rate limit or account quota, or retry later for a temporary service problem rather than treating it as a slow-page timeout.

Increase the timeout only when the page needs it

ScreenshotAPI.net documents timeout in milliseconds, with a default of 100000 ms. The documentation warns that too small a value can abort a page before it loads. Raise it when the destination has a credible reason to need more time, such as slow scripts or data requests, rather than applying a large timeout to every capture. The vendor gives examples of 10000 and 60000 ms; these are examples, not guarantees that a page will finish within those periods. See the timeout and loading-options documentation.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Also check the deadline in your own HTTP client, job runner, or calling service. If that outer deadline is shorter than the screenshot request’s render timeout, your caller may cancel the request first. That is general implementation guidance, not a separate ScreenshotAPI.net setting.

Choose the page event and delay based on what is missing

Setting Documented behavior When to use it
wait_for_event=load Waits for the page load, including resources; this is the documented default. Choose when completeness of loaded page assets matters and waiting for them is acceptable.
wait_for_event=domcontentloaded Triggers after HTML parsing, without waiting for every image, stylesheet, or other resource. Choose for a faster structural capture when late assets are not essential.
wait_for_event=networkidle Waits until there are no active network requests for at least 500 ms. Can help when dynamic requests settle, but may be a poor fit for pages that keep making requests.
delay Adds a pause after the selected page-load event; default is 0 ms. Add a modest pause if charts, animations, API-driven content, or other UI appears after that event.

A faster event can capture the page before late content appears. Conversely, waiting for network idle can be unhelpful when a page maintains ongoing network activity. Adjust one setting at a time and compare the returned image with the target page so you can tell which behavior mattered.

Use lazy loading for content activated by scrolling

If a full-page capture misses images or sections below the fold, the page may load them only after scrolling. Set lazy_load=true to simulate scrolling and trigger deferred content. The documented scroll_delay default is 500 ms; the documentation describes 200–500 ms as a moderate range for many sites. Increase the interval only when the target needs more time after each scroll step. On long pages, a large per-scroll delay can consume the overall timeout budget.

Lazy loading addresses scroll-triggered content, not a generally slow server or a failed network connection. If the page is slow before it can render anything, investigate the timeout and error class first.

Apply a focused troubleshooting sequence

  1. Verify the request. Confirm it uses ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented endpoint, the intended target URL, and a valid token. Do not expose a real API token in logs or published examples.
  2. Record the response. Capture the HTTP status and error code. Follow the relevant category in the error documentation rather than assuming every failure means the page timeout is too low.
  3. For a confirmed timeout, inspect page behavior. Determine whether useful content arrives after scripts or API calls, whether the page is still loading assets, or whether content appears only after scrolling.
  4. Change the matching setting. Raise timeout for genuinely slow rendering; select an appropriate wait_for_event; add a modest delay for content that appears after the event; or enable lazy_load for scroll-triggered sections.
  5. Check other deadlines and access. Confirm your caller has not cancelled the request earlier, and verify the destination URL, redirects, TLS setup, and public network accessibility.
  6. Handle service and account errors separately. Correct quota or rate-limit problems; for a documented temporary service or internal error, retry later rather than repeatedly increasing the page timeout.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a different screenshot API rather than tuning ScreenshotAPI.net, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. The following cURL example captures a page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo does not bill bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, or cache hits. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

What the documented settings can and cannot establish

The timeout, wait-event, delay, and lazy-load defaults above are ScreenshotAPI.net documentation claims, not independently measured performance guarantees. The documentation pages reviewed show no publication date; the render page displayed a 2026 copyright footer. Treat the values as configuration guidance, not a promise that a specific target site will render within a fixed time.
