Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A ScreenshotAPI.net 403 error can mean an exhausted screenshot quota, an expired trial, or a refused connection to the target website. Check the exact error code and message in the response before changing settings: each cause has a different fix.
Identify which 403 you received
ScreenshotAPI.net maps several distinct errors to HTTP 403. The status alone does not establish that the target site blocked the capture; use the returned error code and message to choose the right troubleshooting path. ScreenshotAPI.net’s error reference documents these cases:
| Error code | What it indicates | First action |
|---|---|---|
screenshots_limit_reached |
The account’s screenshot usage quota has been exceeded. | Check usage and plan quota. |
trial_expired |
The trial has expired. | Check account and trial status. |
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED |
The connection to the target was refused; possible causes include target availability, a network issue, or a firewall. | Check whether the target is reachable and whether network restrictions apply. |
These are the service’s documented meanings, not a diagnosis of every individual failure. If the code is unclear, keep the complete response and check the target site’s availability or logs where you have access.
Fix an exceeded screenshot quota
For screenshots_limit_reached, review your account’s usage and quota. ScreenshotAPI.net Help says upgrading the plan increases the screenshot quota. If usage appears below the limit, verify that you are checking the account and plan associated with the token used for the request. See the vendor’s quota guidance for its documented upgrade path.

Fix an expired trial
For trial_expired, check the account’s trial status and restore an eligible plan or account status as directed by ScreenshotAPI.net. Changing the target URL, headers, or proxy does not address an expired trial.
Troubleshoot ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED
This error points to a connection problem involving the target rather than the quota or trial conditions above. ScreenshotAPI.net lists target availability, network issues, and firewall restrictions as possible causes. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the target is available. Open the exact URL in a browser and check for an outage, redirect, or access restriction. If you control the site, check its server and firewall logs for the request.
- Check the URL and request inputs. Confirm the target URL is correct, publicly reachable from the service, and uses HTTPS. Verify that the request includes the required API token and correctly named URL parameter; request construction is covered below.
- Investigate network restrictions. If the site is accessible from your network but the capture still fails, a firewall or other network restriction may affect the service’s connection. The response alone does not show which restriction, if any, is responsible.
- Test request-context options only when relevant. ScreenshotAPI.net documents custom headers, a user-agent, and proxy routing. Change one option at a time and compare the returned error. These are conditional troubleshooting controls, not guaranteed ways to make a particular target capturable or bypass its access policy.
The vendor describes proxy routing as an option for some network restrictions and regional content. It does not establish that a proxy will resolve a specific refused connection. Its separate proxy documentation also describes possible CAPTCHA reduction as vendor guidance, not a guarantee.

Verify the request before changing browser settings
Rule out a malformed request first. The render documentation describes a v3 screenshot endpoint that takes a token and target URL. ScreenshotAPI.net’s Help page says a missing or misnamed URL parameter can produce a URL-required error and advises using a URL that starts with https://.

- Send the API token under the parameter name the endpoint expects.
- Send the target under the expected URL parameter name; check spelling and encoding.
- Use a complete HTTPS URL, including the hostname and any needed path.
- Read the response body as well as the HTTP status; the code and message distinguish request, account, and target problems.
When headers, user-agent, or a proxy are worth testing
ScreenshotAPI.net’s browser environment emulation documentation describes headers, user_agent, and proxy as request options. Headers can affect how the target responds; a user-agent can simulate a browser or device identity; a proxy routes the request through a specified proxy server. Consider them only after verifying the request and checking reachability:
- Use custom headers when the target legitimately requires headers that your request lacks.
- Test a user-agent when you need to compare how the target responds to different browser identities.
- Consider proxy routing when there is a plausible regional or network-routing restriction and you are authorized to use that route.
Record the original response, change one setting at a time, and stop if the target’s access policy disallows the request. The documentation does not promise that these options overcome every firewall, bot check, or refusal.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Save the full HTTP response, including its error code and message.
- If it is
screenshots_limit_reached, check usage and quota, then follow the vendor’s plan guidance. - If it is
trial_expired, check trial and account status and restore an eligible account. - If it is
ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, test target availability and investigate network or firewall restrictions. - Verify the token, URL parameter name, and HTTPS target URL.
- Only if the target and request checks justify it, test a relevant header, user-agent, or proxy setting separately.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API uses one GET request to return a screenshot or PDF; before capture, it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Those cleanup steps can each be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents.
For example, this cURL request captures Stripe as WebP:
