A 429 means a request limit was applied somewhere in the screenshot-rendering flow—but it may be your screenshot provider throttling your account or the destination website refusing the provider’s request. Check the response body and headers to identify which one, then pause or pace requests according to that service’s reset instructions. There is no universal screenshot API limit, reset interval, or error format.
First find out who returned the 429
A screenshot request involves at least two services: your API provider and the website being captured. Either can be associated with a 429. The distinction matters: waiting for a provider-side concurrency window is different from backing off because the destination site is refusing requests.
- Save the whole response. Record the HTTP status, response body, response headers, timestamp, and any request ID. Redact API keys, cookies, authorization values, and sensitive URL parameters before sharing logs.
- Read the provider’s structured error details. Look for a documented error code or message that says whether the limit is a request-rate cap, a concurrency cap, a quota, or a target-site error. Field names and meanings vary by provider.
- Check usage information. Consult the provider’s dashboard or usage endpoint if available. A 429 alone does not tell you whether you have exhausted a monthly allowance.
- Check for destination status. Some providers distinguish their own throttling from an error returned by the captured host. For example, ScreenshotOne documents
concurrency_limit_reachedfor its concurrency condition andhost_returned_errorwith areturned_status_codefor a target response. Those identifiers are ScreenshotOne-specific, not a general API standard.
Apply the fix that matches the error
If the screenshot provider is throttling requests
Stop launching new parallel captures, place pending work in a queue, and resume at the reset time or after the delay the provider documents. If the response includes Retry-After, honor it. Otherwise, use that provider’s documented reset value or usage endpoint; do not guess a reset interval from another service.
Concurrency limits and requests-per-second limits are different. A service can reject too many simultaneous renders even when your average request rate is modest, or impose a short-window rate cap even when only a few renders are in flight. Check which limit the provider actually reports before changing worker settings.

If the destination website returned 429
Back off before trying that URL again. Repeating the same capture immediately can add more requests to a site that has already refused traffic. Follow any applicable response instructions exposed by the provider, and only try another route if automated access to that page is authorized. A proxy does not raise a screenshot provider’s own account or concurrency limit.
If the account quota is exhausted
Check the account’s current usage and quota-reset terms. Monthly render allowances are separate from short-term request or concurrency limits; providers may use a different status code or error name for quota exhaustion. For example, Screenshot API documents a 429 rate_limited response separately from a 402 quota_reached response. Its documentation says its monthly allowance resets at the start of each UTC calendar month; those semantics apply to Screenshot API, not to screenshot APIs generally.

Retry without creating another burst
Do not put an immediate, unlimited retry loop around a screenshot request. A safe retry policy should wait for the provider’s stated delay or reset, cap attempts, and avoid letting each worker retry independently at once. For a queued workload, keep the failed job pending and release it when the applicable limit allows.
if response.status_code == 429:
delay = documented_retry_after_or_reset(response)
pause_queue_until(delay)
retry_job_with_attempt_limit(job)
documented_retry_after_or_reset and pause_queue_until are placeholders for your client’s actual response parsing and scheduler; they are not built-in functions. Parse the delay format documented by your provider rather than assuming every Retry-After value or reset header uses the same representation.

Prevent recurring 429s
- Cap parallel workers. Set the maximum in-flight captures to a level permitted by your provider, and lower it if concurrency errors recur.
- Smooth bursts. Release queued jobs gradually rather than sending a large batch simultaneously. A steady arrival rate is easier to control than a repeated burst-and-retry cycle.
- Coordinate workers. If several processes share one API key, make them share rate-limit state. Otherwise, each may believe it can use the full allowance and collectively exceed it.
- Reuse valid results. Cache screenshots when the page and capture settings have not changed and the stored image remains suitable. This reduces duplicate renders; set cache validity to match how often the page needs to be refreshed.
- Find other callers. Check scheduled jobs, parallel deployments, and applications sharing the same account before assuming one worker is responsible.
- Monitor the provider’s own signals. Where exposed, record remaining capacity and reset information alongside status codes. These signals are provider-specific and should not be transplanted from another API’s documentation.
Provider examples: same status, different meanings
These documented examples show why a 429 should be interpreted using the service that returned it. Error names, status codes, limits, and reset behavior can change; check the provider’s current documentation and account usage.
| Service | What its documentation distinguishes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Its stated billing policy says bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. This does not establish a rate-limit threshold or guarantee that a request cannot receive 429. | Use the response’s documented verdict and billing headers for those outcomes; consult the current docs for API behavior. |
| ScreenshotOne | Documents concurrency_limit_reached, target errors such as host_returned_error with a returned status, and a separate screenshots_limit_reached quota error. |
For its concurrency condition, its guide points to the usage endpoint and concurrency.reset; for a target-site 429, wait before retrying. Its guide says a proxy does not change its own concurrency limit. |
| Urlbox | Its API reference maps HTTP 429 to “Too many requests — Rate limit was reached” and lists RateLimitExceededError among common errors. The applicable account threshold and reset time are not established by that reference. |
Check Urlbox’s current rate-limit guidance or your account usage rather than borrowing another provider’s values. |
| Screenshot API (screenshot-api.net) | Documents 429 rate_limited and a separate 402 quota_reached. It describes requests-per-second and monthly renders as independent limits, with monthly quota resetting at the start of each UTC calendar month. |
Honor Retry-After for its rate-limited response and check the account quota separately. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you are building a capture workflow rather than debugging a particular provider’s account limit, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. The example below saves a WebP capture of stripe.com; replace the target URL and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API docs for parameters and response details.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report page verdict and billing information in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These features do not change another provider’s limits or promise that destination websites will never return 429.

Troubleshooting checklist
- 429 but no clear error: inspect the response body and headers, then check usage and provider documentation. The status alone does not identify which limit was reached.
- 429 continues after waiting: verify that the reset time was interpreted correctly, check whether other workers share the same key, and confirm the provider has not reported quota exhaustion instead.
- Only one destination URL fails: determine whether the provider reports a host-returned 429. Back off on that target rather than increasing provider concurrency.
- Errors appear only during batches: reduce simultaneous jobs and smooth the queue; batch size and allowed parallel renders are not necessarily the same limit.
- A proxy was added but 429 remains: identify whether the provider or destination returned the error. A proxy cannot raise the screenshot service’s account cap.
- You are unsure what to share with support: include the timestamp, status, sanitized body and headers, request ID if present, and relevant usage information. Never include credentials or sensitive cookies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HTTP 429 always mean my screenshot API key is being rate-limited?
No. The status may describe the screenshot provider’s limit or a 429 returned by the destination website. The response details and provider documentation determine which.
