To capture a website with Selenium Java on a headless Linux server, launch Chrome with --headless=new, navigate to the page, wait for the content your image needs, then save a screenshot returned by Selenium’s TakesScreenshot API. Match Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions, ensure the output directory is writable, and call driver.quit() even if capture fails.
Take and save a screenshot with Selenium Java
The following example opens a page in headless Chrome, captures the browser’s current screenshot, and copies it to a specified path. It uses Selenium’s Java API and Java NIO for file handling.
import java.nio.file.Files;
import java.nio.file.Path;
import java.nio.file.StandardCopyOption;
import org.openqa.selenium.OutputType;
import org.openqa.selenium.TakesScreenshot;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.chrome.ChromeOptions;
public class WebsiteScreenshot {
public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.addArguments("--headless=new");
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);
try {
driver.get("https://example.com");
// Add an explicit wait here if the page has dynamic content.
Path destination = Path.of("/path/to/output.png");
Files.copy(
((TakesScreenshot) driver).getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE).toPath(),
destination,
StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING
);
} finally {
driver.quit();
}
}
}
Replace https://example.com with the target URL and /path/to/output.png with an absolute path that the Linux process can write. Create the destination directory beforehand if it does not exist. The capture call returns a temporary screenshot file; copying it to your destination preserves the image at the path your application expects. See Selenium’s WebDriver documentation for its API generally; the screenshot operation is documented in the Selenium Java API as TakesScreenshot.getScreenshotAs(OutputType.FILE).
Prepare headless Chrome on Linux
Headless mode is a Chrome launch argument passed through ChromeOptions; use options.addArguments("--headless=new"). Selenium’s Chrome guidance documents this argument and notes that Chrome and ChromeDriver should have matching major versions: Selenium Chrome documentation.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Install Chrome or Chromium and make sure the process can locate the browser binary. If it is installed in a nonstandard location, configure the browser binary through Chrome options.
- Install a ChromeDriver compatible with the installed browser. Compare their major version numbers first when session startup reports a compatibility error.
- Use Selenium 4 browser-specific options such as
ChromeOptions. Selenium’s compatibility note says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome 75 and greater, but check current release guidance when upgrading because browser releases change. - Run the Java process as a user with access to the browser installation and write permission for the destination directory.
Historically, Selenium’s headless convenience method was deprecated in Selenium 4.8 and removed in 4.10. Chromium’s newer headless mode was available after Chrome 109 as --headless=new; these are upgrade-context markers, not a reason to use the removed method. Use the currently documented Chrome argument and recheck compatibility when updating dependencies: Selenium’s headless-mode announcement.
Wait for the page state the screenshot needs
driver.get(url) waits for the navigation’s configured completion condition, commonly the page’s load event. That does not guarantee that a single-page app, late-loading images, or other dynamic elements are ready for an accurate capture. Selenium also cautions that document.readyState reaching complete does not necessarily mean an application has finished loading its content: Selenium browser options and page-load behavior.

Choose a wait condition based on what must appear in the image. For example, wait for a result panel, a specific heading, or a loading indicator to disappear rather than relying only on a fixed delay. Selenium’s Java wait APIs let you wait for a condition before calling getScreenshotAs. Do not capture before the condition is met if missing or partial content would make the screenshot unusable.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChromeDriver cannot create a session or reports an unsupported browser version | Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions do not match, or the browser executable cannot be found. | Compare the installed browser and driver major versions. Confirm Chrome is installed and configure its binary path if it is outside the expected location. |
| The screenshot is missing page content | The page fired its load event before dynamic content finished rendering. | Add an explicit wait for the element or application state that should be visible in the image. Reconsider whether a fixed delay is reliable for the page. |
| No image appears at the destination | The destination directory may not exist or the process may lack write permission. | Create the directory and check ownership and permissions for the user running Java. Use an absolute path while diagnosing. |
| The browser session remains running after an exception | The session was not closed on every execution path. | Keep driver.quit() in a finally block or equivalent test teardown so cleanup runs after success or failure. |
Local or remote execution
A local headless browser keeps setup and browser-version maintenance on your Linux host. A remote WebDriver session moves browser execution elsewhere and requires a browser-specific options instance for that session. Choose based on who will maintain browser and driver versions, required browser coverage and concurrency, and whether the execution environment can reach the target site. Selenium documents local Chrome setup and options for remote sessions, but does not establish vendor prices or service-level claims in the cited guidance.

Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a screenshot rather than a Selenium-managed browser session, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its cookie-banner, popup, and chat-widget removal can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card.
For a complete API parameter reference, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is on every plan. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan to get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this code take a full-page screenshot?
The example calls Selenium’s standard WebDriver screenshot method. The cited Selenium material does not establish full-page capture behavior for this code, so do not assume it captures beyond the browser’s current viewport.
