That is the best-supported download route—not a guarantee that every installer using the old or new name is safe. The available sources do not establish that a particular current installer has been independently scanned or verified by hash.
Where to download Screencast-O-Matic’s current application
ScreenPal says the product’s rebrand changed its name and branding, while existing account credentials and content continue. It also says future updates and feature enhancements will be delivered under ScreenPal. Its current guidance is to visit ScreenPal.com, sign in with the same username and password used for Screencast-O-Matic, and launch the Screenshot tool, Screen Recorder, or Video Editor. ScreenPal says doing so installs the updated application.

- Open ScreenPal’s official website by entering the domain yourself or using a trusted bookmark.
- Sign in with your existing Screencast-O-Matic account credentials.
- Launch one of ScreenPal’s desktop tools and follow the installation prompt.
- Before opening the installer, check that the download came from ScreenPal and review the publisher or signature information available on your device.
A familiar product name in a search result or filename does not establish that a download is genuine. Avoid installers from unrelated download sites, and do not rely on an old link unless you can confirm it is still the correct route for your situation.

What a SmartScreen warning does—and does not—mean
Microsoft says a Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Application Reputation warning that a program is “not commonly downloaded” is not, by itself, an indication that the download is malicious. It is a reputation warning, not a definitive malware finding. Microsoft’s explanation is available in its SmartScreen FAQ.

Still, treat the warning as a reason to pause. Confirm the download source and inspect publisher or signature details where available. If you cannot establish that the file came from ScreenPal or otherwise verify its publisher, do not run it simply to get past the warning. A warning’s absence also does not prove that a file is safe.
Canvas Studio users may have different installation instructions
Instructure’s Canvas Studio guide covers a legacy Screencast-O-Matic screen-capture add-on and describes Windows and Mac installation. It notes that the Windows installer version can change and distinguishes an installer requiring administrator access from a non-admin option available inside Studio.

Those directions are specific to that Canvas Studio context, not universal instructions for every ScreenPal user. If you use the add-on through a school or organization, follow its current instructions and confirm the version with your institution. For general desktop use, ScreenPal’s own current route is the relevant guidance.

It is a vendor-level rating, not a malware scan, certification, or safety verdict for a specific ScreenPal installer. A score about an organization should not be used as proof that a downloaded file is safe.

What is—and is not—verified about the installer
The cited sources establish ScreenPal’s recommended update route and explain how to interpret a SmartScreen reputation warning. They do not provide a current installer hash paired with a matching malware scan. No installer-specific assurance is therefore established here; the guidance is to obtain the application through ScreenPal’s official route and verify the source and publisher before running it, rather than treating the product name or a third-party rating as a guarantee.
