Screen Time Not Working on iOS? Fix Reports, App Limits, Downtime and Family Sharing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Screen Time not working” can mean several different failures: no activity report, an App Limit that still allows use, Downtime that does not block apps, or Family Sharing settings that never reach a child’s device. Start by identifying the failing component, then check the matching control. Apple’s current iPhone guidance places reporting and enforcement behind separate settings, so repeatedly switching Screen Time off and on is rarely the best first step.

Start with these checks

  1. Update every related iPhone, iPad and Mac before changing Family Sharing or cross-device Screen Time settings. Apple recommends current software on all family devices.
  2. Open Settings → Screen Time → App & Website Activity and make sure it is on. Turning it off also disables reports, Downtime, App Limits and Always Allowed. See Apple’s Screen Time guide.
  3. Confirm the correct Apple Account, family member and device are selected.
  4. Check the device’s date, time zone, current day and Downtime schedule.
  5. Review Always Allowed and Share Across Devices before assuming enforcement or reporting is broken.

Choose the symptom that matches your problem

No activity, or a blank report

  1. Go to Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity.
  2. Tap Devices, select the iPhone or iPad you are investigating, then choose Day or Week.
  3. Use the device for a while and check again. Apple notes that a child may need to use a device longer before a useful summary appears; uncategorized activity can appear in gray.
  4. Check whether Share Across Devices is combining activity from another iPhone, iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account.

If the report remains empty after App & Website Activity is enabled and the correct device is selected, test with Share Across Devices temporarily off. This separates a local reporting problem from a synchronization problem; it is not a guaranteed permanent fix.

App Limits appear but the app keeps opening

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time → App Limits and select the affected limit.
  2. Confirm the selected app or category, daily allowance and any custom allowance for individual days.
  3. Enable the available blocking option if your configuration offers one.
  4. Delete and recreate only this limit, then test with one app.

An App Limit is a daily allowance, not necessarily a tamper-proof lock. Depending on the setup, iOS can show a reminder, offer continued use or allow an additional-time request. For a scheduled hard restriction, use Downtime with Block at Downtime.

Downtime is active but restricted apps still open

  1. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Downtime and verify the start time, end time and selected days.
  2. Turn on Block at Downtime. Apple says restricted apps then appear dimmed with an hourglass and cannot be opened during the scheduled period; with it off, iOS displays a reminder but permits continued use. See Apple’s Downtime guidance.
  3. Open Settings → Screen Time → Always Allowed and remove the app temporarily for testing.
  4. Check that App & Website Activity is enabled and test on the child’s device, not only on the parent’s device.

Downtime does not make every function unavailable. Calls, messages and specifically allowed apps can remain accessible. Communication limits and allowed contacts may also affect Phone, FaceTime and Messages.

Limits or reports are wrong on one of several devices

Open Settings → Screen Time → Share Across Devices. When enabled, compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices using the same Apple Account can share settings and reports. A limit created on one device may apply elsewhere, and totals may include activity from an old or secondary device. Turn it off temporarily if you need to isolate one device, or leave it on when you deliberately want one combined policy. Apple documents this behavior in its Screen Time user guide.

Users have reported delayed or incomplete cross-device synchronization in one MacRumors discussion and another. Those reports show recurring failure modes, not a confirmed defect in every current iOS release.

A child’s activity, limit or approval does not reach the parent

  1. On the organizer’s or parent’s device, open Settings → Screen Time and select the child under Family.
  2. Confirm the child’s Apple Account is actually in the Family Sharing group and that the parent is using the account authorized to manage Screen Time.
  3. Update every family device, then keep the child’s device online long enough to receive the configuration.
  4. Create one test limit for one app instead of changing the entire policy.
  5. Check whether an “Ask for More Time” request appears on the parent’s device or only on the child’s device.

Apple explains parent-side management in its child Screen Time support page and recommends updating devices before configuring controls. Users have also reported Family Sharing approval failures after particular iOS updates in this MacRumors thread; treat those reports as version-specific and anecdotal.

The Apple Account is gray, or sign-out is blocked

This can be an intentional restriction. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allow Changes To → Accounts and choose Allow. Review the other items under Allow Changes To as well. Screen Time can restrict account, cellular-data, passcode, privacy and background-activity changes. See Apple’s guidance for a grayed-out Apple Account.

Reset Screen Time safely

  1. Write down the current schedules, limits, Always Allowed entries and affected devices.
  2. Disable or delete only the affected App Limit, or temporarily disable Share Across Devices if synchronization is under investigation.
  3. Restart the affected devices.
  4. Install available software updates on every related device.
  5. Re-enable the control and test one app on one device before rebuilding the rest of the policy.
  6. Restore additional limits and exemptions one at a time.

A factory erase, sign-out or “reset all settings” is disproportionate as an early Screen Time fix and can recreate the same account or synchronization problem.

When it is probably an Apple software or sync problem

Contact Apple Support when Settings freezes or crashes, reports stay blank after correct setup and sufficient use, a child’s configuration never reaches the device, limits repeatedly revert, or passcode recovery fails with the correct recovery account. Capture the exact symptom, device model, iOS or iPadOS version, Apple Account arrangement and whether Share Across Devices is enabled. Community reports can identify patterns, but Apple has not confirmed a universal Screen Time bug covering all current releases.
