When it appears as 0x800707E7-0x3000D, the rollback commonly occurs in the FIRST_BOOT phase during MIGRATE_DATA. The safest approach is to confirm that profile-migration variant, back up your data, identify stale or orphaned profiles, and remove only entries you can prove are unused.
What 0x800707E7 means
The underlying code 0x000007E7 is associated with ERROR_PROFILE_DOES_NOT_MATCH_DEVICE: “The specified profile is intended for a device of a different type than the specified device.” Setup may also report “User profile suffix mismatch, upgrade cannot continue.” These messages point to profile identity or path data that Setup cannot reconcile.
This is normally an upgrade or in-place-setup failure, not an ordinary download problem. It has been reported with Windows 10 feature updates, Windows Setup and Media Creation Tool upgrades, and Windows 10-to-Windows 11 upgrades. The hexadecimal code alone is less informative than the phase and log text. See the Microsoft discussion of this failure at Microsoft Q&A.
Before changing profiles or the registry
- Back up personal files to an external disk or cloud storage, and create a restore point or system image where practical.
- Confirm that you can sign in to a second administrator account. Do not edit the active account’s profile while relying on it for recovery.
- Record the folders currently under
C:Users. - Export
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileListin Registry Editor. On 64-bit systems, check for related third-party entries underHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWOW6432NodeMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList. - Do not delete an unfamiliar profile, a service account, or a suffix-named key merely because its name looks suspicious.
Confirm the migration failure in Setup logs
- Open File Explorer and enable View > Show > Hidden items if necessary.
- Open
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.logandsetupact.log. - After a rollback, also inspect
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesRollback. - Search for
0x800707E7,0x000007E7,User profile suffix mismatch, andMIGRATE_DATA.
The logs may confirm the error without naming one offending account. That is why you should inventory profile paths instead of deleting the first account mentioned online. Microsoft documents this limitation in its upgrade-failure discussions, including this Q&A report.

Remove unused or orphaned profiles safely
- Press
Win + R, enterSystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe, and press Enter. - Under User Profiles, select Settings.
- Review profiles that are demonstrably obsolete or orphaned.
- Select only a confirmed-unused profile and choose Delete.
- Restart Windows before trying the upgrade again.
Windows normally prevents deletion of the profile currently in use. A profile missing from this dialog may belong to a service, may have had its folder deleted manually, or may exist only as a stale registry entry. Keep any profile still required by a person, service, backup job, database, or management tool.
Inspect ProfileList when the UI is insufficient
- Sign in with the second administrator account, press
Win + R, enterregedit, and approve the prompt. - Go to
ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList. - Select each SID-formatted subkey and read
ProfileImagePath. - Compare every path with the actual folders under
C:Users.
Investigate a path whose folder no longer exists, two SIDs pointing to one folder, an old username, a removed installation, or a profile with incomplete contents or unusual permissions. Suffixes such as .bak, .000, and .001 are clues, not automatic proof of corruption; Windows can create suffixed folders legitimately. Never delete every suffixed key without identifying the active account and owner.
Check software-created service profiles
Profiles can remain after graphics utilities, database software, backup tools, endpoint-security products, remote-management agents, or hardware utilities are removed. NVIDIA’s historical UpdatusUser profile is one reported example, but it is not a universal cause. SQL Server service accounts and other application-created accounts can also be legitimate.
- Identify the account’s owning software and Windows services.
- Uninstall obsolete software through Settings > Apps or the vendor’s uninstaller.
- Stop or remove a service only when you have confirmed it is unused.
- Delete the associated profile only after confirming that no application or service needs it.
Do not remove a required service account simply to force Setup past the migration stage. A third-party example involving UpdatusUser is described at Repair Win.

If a profile folder name is wrong
A Microsoft Q&A report describes resolving the issue by making a profile folder name and its ProfileImagePath agree. This is an advanced, high-risk repair: applications, OneDrive, scheduled tasks, services, and other registry values may still reference the old path.
Use a complete backup and a second administrator account if you attempt it, and ensure the folder name and ProfileImagePath match exactly. Do not replace every occurrence of an old path throughout the registry. When the affected account is not essential to preserve exactly, creating a new administrator account and migrating data is safer.
Repair Windows system files
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart afterward and retry the upgrade. DISM and SFC can repair component-store or system-file corruption; they do not directly correct a mismatched user-profile record. If DISM repairs corruption, restart before running SFC again. If SFC reports unrepaired files, or both commands succeed but the same error returns, continue investigating profiles and Setup logs.
Prepare and retry the upgrade
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and external hardware.
- Temporarily remove or disable third-party antivirus, disk-encryption add-ons, system tuners, and hardware utilities where your organization permits it.
- Use a clean boot if background software may interfere.
- Check free storage, current manufacturer drivers, AC power, mapped drives, and redirected profile locations.
- Verify that installation media matches the installed Windows language and edition.
Retry through Windows Update or official matching installation media, selecting the option to keep personal files and apps when offered. This remains an in-place attempt and may still fail if the same profile record is encountered.

When a cache reset is appropriate
If the failure occurs before Setup reaches profile migration, an elevated Command Prompt can reset update caches:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
net stop msiserver
ren %windir%SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %windir%System32catroot2 catroot2.old
net start msiserver
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
If a service will not stop, investigate rather than forcing a rename. Restart afterward. This procedure resets caches; it does not repair ProfileList. Microsoft’s installation guidance is available at Install Windows updates.
If 0x800707E7 still appears
| Situation | Next step | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Clearly obsolete profile visible in User Profiles | Remove it through the Windows dialog | Deleting needed data |
| SID points to a missing folder | Export the key, verify ownership, then remove the stale entry | Breaking a legitimate service |
| Active profile path is wrong | Create a new administrator and migrate data | Manual renaming can break applications |
| Several suffixes or duplicate paths | Investigate each SID individually | Blind deletion can cause data loss or boot problems |
| Cleanup does not change the error | Use matching installation media, then consider a clean install | Repeating the same failed upgrade |
Create a new account
Use a new administrator when the existing profile is damaged, manually renamed, or referenced by obsolete paths. Copy documents and carefully re-create application settings, then retry from that clean profile.
Use an in-place repair or clean installation
An in-place repair with official media can preserve apps and files when Setup accepts the installation. A clean installation should follow only after verified backups and confirmation that you have installers, credentials, and product information; applications will need to be reinstalled.

Should you move to Windows 11 instead?
Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Repairing an old Windows 10 feature-update path does not restore that support. If the computer meets Windows 11 hardware requirements, Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can receive the free upgrade; use the official Windows 11 download page to check the current process.
Eligible consumer devices may receive protection through Windows 10 Consumer ESU until October 12, 2027, but eligibility, enrollment, and pricing vary. LTSC, IoT, enterprise-managed devices, and other editions follow separate lifecycle rules. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 end-of-support guidance before deciding whether continued Windows 10 use is appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete NVIDIA’s UpdatusUser profile?
Only after confirming which software created it and that no installed service still requires it. The name alone is not proof that deletion is safe.
Is it safe to delete every .bak or .000 profile key?
No. Match each SID’s ProfileImagePath to the account and folder, identify the active profile, and keep a registry export before any removal.

Often, yes: removing a confirmed orphaned profile or using in-place media can preserve apps and files. A damaged active profile may require a new account or clean installation.
Should I keep repairing Windows 10 in 2026?
Consider Windows 11 if the device qualifies. Windows 10 ordinary support ended October 14, 2025; ESU and special lifecycle editions have separate eligibility rules.
