A screen protector that looks too small, sits crooked or lifts at the edges has one of four causes. The border may be intentional. The protector may be made for a different model or size. It may have been placed off-center. Or your case may be pushing on it. Work through those in order, and you will usually know whether to reposition it, change the case or replace the protector.
Is a gap at the edge normal?
Sometimes. Huawei’s support page for a protector that cannot fully cover the screen says: “If the exposed screen edges are between 0.5 mm and 2 mm in width, do not be concerned as it is designed in this way to provide an excellent grip and good protection for your phone.” That is Huawei Consumer Support New Zealand guidance for its own context. It is not a universal industry tolerance, and other brands may allow a different border.

The useful distinction is the shape of the gap, not just its width:

- Narrow and even on all sides: likely a design choice, particularly on phones with curved edges.
- Visibly wider on one side, or crooked against the bezel: likely a placement problem.
- Large gaps, misaligned cutouts or a different overall size: likely the wrong model or size.
Step 1: Confirm the protector is for your exact model
Match the protector to the exact phone model and size. Google’s Pixel Help page on screen protectors and Fingerprint Unlock recommends a protector made for your phone’s model and size. ESR likewise asks customers to supply the device model when a protector does not fit.

- Find your model name or number in the phone’s settings or manufacturer documentation.
- Compare it with the packaging or product listing. Similar names, such as base, Plus, Pro or Max variants, often have different screen sizes.
- Check that the listing names your model, not just a similar screen size.
Step 2: Check alignment and installation
If the model is right but the glass is crooked, the fault is probably placement. Latercase’s installation instructions (updated October 31, 2025) call for these steps:
- Work in bright light and a dust-free environment.
- Clean and dry the screen, and remove any dust.
- Check for equal spacing around the protector before you lay it down.
Dust under the glass can look like a fit defect, and a protector set down off-center cannot be corrected by the glass itself. An alignment tray or installation kit helps with placement if you have the correct protector. It cannot make the wrong dimensions fit.

Step 3: Rule out the case
If the edges lift only after you put a case on, remove the case and watch whether the lifting stops. ESR says some third-party cases may press on protector edges because of their fit or design. This is manufacturer advice rather than independent comparative testing, but the check costs nothing. Treat the case and protector as a pair. Full-coverage protectors on phones with sharply curved edges are where this conflict is most likely, so a case-friendly protector with a little clearance may suit you better.
Step 4: Check whether function is affected
A poor fit can come with other problems. Samsung Support lists poor fit, lifting, difficulty removing the film, and possible touch, fingerprint or display effects among the issues with some unauthorized third-party films. Its page says: “Some unauthorized third-party tempered glass or protective films may affect display quality, touch performance, and other device functions.” See Samsung Support.

Certification is a clue, not a guarantee. Samsung describes its Designed for Samsung mark as identifying accessories that passed its quality verification process. Google still cautions that fingerprint performance may be worse even with certified Pixel screen protectors, and its page gives Pixel-specific setup steps. If touch or the fingerprint sensor misbehaves, contact the seller or phone maker for device-specific guidance and a model-correct replacement.
