Screen Flickering: What It Means and When to Worry

Flicker often comes from a display setting, cable, connection, or software issue. Here’s how to troubleshoot it and understand the specific health risks.

Usually, screen flickering points to a display, cable, connection, setting, or software problem—not a medical diagnosis. It can cause temporary discomfort, and flashing lights or patterns can trigger seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy. Check the display methodically; if flicker brings on troubling or persistent symptoms, stop viewing and seek medical advice.

What screen flickering can—and cannot—tell you

Flicker by itself does not establish that you have an eye or neurological condition. A monitor may flicker because of its settings, an app or display driver, a loose or damaged cable, a connection issue, or faulty display hardware. HP’s monitor troubleshooting guidance recommends checking settings, software, connections, and cables.

Screen use can also cause eyestrain symptoms such as headache, dry eyes, light sensitivity, or blurred or double vision. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health says many symptoms associated with electronic-device use are temporary and ease after use stops. Take a break if viewing is uncomfortable; don’t assume that discomfort proves the display is defective or that flicker is its cause.

Can screen flickering trigger a seizure?

Flashing lights and visual patterns can trigger seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy. That is a specific risk for susceptible people, not evidence that a person who notices flicker has epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation’s photosensitivity guidance says susceptibility varies and depends on multiple factors.

The Foundation reports that about 3% of people with epilepsy have seizures triggered by flashing lights or visual patterns. It describes 5–30 flashes per second as generally most likely to trigger seizures, while emphasizing that individual risk varies. These figures are general guidance, not a way to diagnose an individual or determine whether a particular monitor is safe.

If flashing lights concern you, the Foundation recommends talking with a doctor. ISO 9241-391:2016 sets requirements and recommendations for reducing photosensitive seizures while viewing images on electronic displays; ISO says the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. Its scope concerns image content, not diagnosing a viewer or repairing a particular display. See ISO 9241-391:2016.

What to check first when your computer screen flickers

Change one thing at a time and note whether the flicker stops. These checks help narrow down the cause; they cannot guarantee a fix if the monitor itself is faulty.

  1. Check whether it is one app or the whole system. Notice when flicker starts and whether it occurs only in one application. If Task Manager also flickers, HP says an app or display driver may be involved. Address the implicated app or update the display driver.
  2. Use a supported display setting. In Windows, check that the display is set to the monitor’s native resolution and a refresh rate the monitor supports. HP includes resolution and refresh-rate settings in its troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Inspect the video connection. Reseat the cable at both ends and check for visible damage. Replace it if damaged or if testing points to it; choose a connector compatible with both the computer and monitor.
  4. Try another port or connection type. If both devices offer another compatible connection, test it. If the symptom changes, the original connection or cable may be involved.
  5. Test the monitor with another computer, if available. If it still flickers, the monitor or its connection is more suspect; if it does not, investigate the original computer, its settings, or software. A persistent fault may indicate defective display hardware.

How to reduce discomfort while you troubleshoot

  • Take a break from viewing when symptoms occur. The Ministry of Health recommends regular visual breaks, including the 20-20-20 routine.
  • Set brightness and contrast to a comfortable level. Reduce glare from windows and lights; OSHA notes that excessive light and glare can contribute to eyestrain or headaches.
  • If symptoms persist, avoid prolonged viewing and consider medical advice. The Ministry of Health advises medical review for redness, blurred or watery vision together with light sensitivity.

Comfort adjustments may help with eyestrain, but they do not repair a bad cable, connection, or monitor. For more on workplace lighting and glare, consult OSHA’s workstation environment guidance.
