No API key and no browser automation are needed for this basic workflow. The catch is that Google has not published a specification for this endpoint. Treat it as a convenient, undocumented URL pattern that can change without notice.
This is the answer to a question that comes up often in Google’s News Community forums: how do you get an RSS feed of Google News custom searches? The steps below cover the URL, how to encode a query, how to read the response, and what the feed does not promise.

The search feed URL pattern
Current third-party RSS guides report the following endpoint pattern for Google News search. Feeder’s guide, which checked its example feeds on September 28, 2026, uses the same search path:

These four parameters are the ones shown in the guides. Google does not document them as parameters of a public API, and the sources reviewed do not guarantee that every combination of values will return results. Read the table as a working pattern, not a contract.

Build the URL step by step

Write your search terms as you would type them into Google News. For example:
electric bikes. -
URL-encode the query. Spaces become
+or%20. Characters such as&,#, and quotation marks must be percent-encoded as%26,%23, and%22. An unescaped&in the query starts a new parameter, which silently changes your search. -
Place the encoded string after
q=. -
Set

Open the finished URL in a browser to confirm that it returns XML rather than a web page, or fetch it from code as shown below.

For a query such as climate & energy, the encoded form is climate+%26+energy. Python’s standard library produces that encoding for you:

'climate+%26+energy'The guides’ examples use plain keyword queries. The sources reviewed do not establish how advanced search operators behave in this feed, so test any operator you need before relying on it.
Read the feed
Option 1: an RSS reader
Paste the finished URL into any RSS reader that accepts a feed address. This is the simplest route if you only want to watch a topic. The reader handles polling, deduplication, and display, and the workflow does not depend on a specific paid product.
Option 2: a short script
To store results or filter them, fetch the URL and parse the XML. The script below reads only three fields, title, pubDate, and link. Check the fields your own responses contain, because the structure of the items is not guaranteed.

print(item.findtext("link"))Send a descriptive User-Agent so the operator of the endpoint can identify your client, and poll at a modest interval. Google does not publish rate limits for this endpoint, so there is no official ceiling to design around.
Language, country and edition settings
The three locale parameters change how the feed is framed, and they should be chosen deliberately:

To target a French-language edition, the same pattern would look like hl=fr&gl=FR&ceid=FR:fr. This is an illustration of the pattern, not a verified combination. Open the URL and check that the results match the edition you intended before building anything on it.

What the feed does not promise

It is not your personal feed. The URL returns results for a search query and locale settings. It does not reproduce an individual’s Chrome Android new-tab or Discover feed, and nothing here describes how Discover personalizes content.

No documented result count, ranking, or update frequency. The sources reviewed give no figures for how many items a response contains, how results are ordered, or how often they refresh.

Item links are not established as full articles. Nothing in the sources confirms that an item link resolves to the complete publisher article, so do not build a pipeline that assumes full-text retrieval.

No stable schema or support commitment. Google publishes no endpoint version, changelog, or support guarantee for this URL.

Terms and permissions
Google’s Feedfetcher documentation describes how Google fetches RSS or Atom feeds that users request from apps and services. It also notes that public feeds cannot be restricted from user access. Those statements describe feed retrieval in general. They are not terms for the Google News search endpoint, and they should not be read as a guarantee that the endpoint will keep working.
Google’s feed terms page, which is published in Polish, says users may generate an RSS or Atom feed through a link after running a Google News search. The same page says users may not redistribute Google feeds. Use the feed for your own monitoring, and check the version of the terms that applies to you, since the wording on a localized page may differ from other versions. When the feed stops working

The response is an HTML page instead of XML. The URL pattern may have changed. Compare your URL with the pattern above and check whether the same search returns results in a browser.

The feed is empty but the web search shows results. Check the encoding of the query first, especially
&,#, and quotation marks. Then confirm that thehl,gl, andceidcombination matches the edition you are checking. -
HTTP errors or blocked requests. Stop retrying in a tight loop, increase the interval between requests, and handle failures with a backoff rather than repeated immediate calls.

Missing fields. Treat
title,pubDate, andlinkas optional in your parser, since the item structure is not guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
The public Google News search RSS URL is the simplest way to get a search feed without an API key or a browser. It is convenient for personal monitoring and small scripts, but it is an observed, undocumented pattern. Build it with encoded queries, check the output regularly, and keep your parser tolerant of change.
