Start with the SCP Foundation if you want an open archive of horror fiction to browse by interest; start with The Magnus Archives if you want a performed audio drama whose episodes build toward a larger story. They share supernatural horror, but they are different kinds of experiences—not competing entries in one reading order.
How are SCP and The Magnus Archives different?
| What to compare | SCP Foundation | The Magnus Archives |
|---|---|---|
| Format | A browsable online archive of fiction set around the fictional Foundation. | A horror fiction audio drama distributed as a podcast. |
| Authorship | A collaborative body of work, with contributors creating stories in a shared setting. | A produced series written and narrated by Jonathan Sims. |
| Story shape | Entries can be explored by topic; there is no single required linear sequence for the archive. | Episodes present unsettling statements that connect and develop into a broader plot. |
| Best suited to | Readers who like sampling, jumping between stories, and following their own interests. | Listeners who want a recurring setting and a guided, sequential story. |
The SCP Wiki describes a setting open to creative works, while Rusty Quill’s show description presents the podcast as statements investigated by the Magnus Institute’s archivist and team. The table’s “best suited to” row is a practical recommendation based on those formats, not a claim that one is objectively better.

Should you start with SCP or The Magnus Archives?
Choose SCP if you want to browse
Go to the SCP Wiki and follow the subjects, entries, or references that interest you. Think of it as an archive with many possible routes, not a novel with a definitive first chapter. Because it is collaborative, individual stories need not share one fixed continuity or fit a single chronological order.
Choose The Magnus Archives if you want a story to follow
Start at the beginning of the official show feed, available through podcast providers. The series begins with statements about supernatural experiences and gradually draws connections among them. Listening in sequence makes that accumulating plot easier to follow and avoids later-story spoilers.

- A complete roleplaying game with everything you need to play, based on the powerful and popular Cypher System.

Is SCP like The Magnus Archives?
They overlap in horror and supernatural subject matter, but the resemblance stops short of their format and structure. SCP is a community-created fiction setting presented as a wiki archive; The Magnus Archives is an authored, acted audio series. If you want a single guided narrative, the podcast is the closer fit. If you want an expandable world you can explore in many directions, SCP is the better match.
How do their creative licenses differ?
If you plan to make or reuse work based on either property, check each official license rather than assuming the terms are interchangeable. The SCP Wiki’s licensing guide says derivative works must credit the source works and use CC BY-SA 3.0; it also notes an exception involving SCP-173’s former image. The Magnus Archives Acast listing identifies the show as CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. These are different terms, and this comparison is not legal advice.

For a group that wants to explore the setting through tabletop play, Monte Cook Games publishes The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, a 384-page core rulebook available in hardcover and PDF formats. It is an optional separate game, not a substitute for the podcast or a prerequisite for understanding it. Check the publisher’s listing for current formats and prices.
