SciPy Misc: What Its Essential Functions Did—and What to Use Now

The functions once found in scipy.misc are legacy APIs, removed in SciPy 1.15. Learn what they did and how to migrate dataset and other uses.

scipy.misc is a legacy namespace, not a current collection of essential functions: SciPy deprecated it in version 1.10 and removed all of its functions in version 1.15. If you are updating old code, use scipy.datasets for dataset retrieval; choose a task-specific replacement for other operations.

What was in scipy.misc?

The SciPy 1.12 reference described scipy.misc as a home for miscellaneous utilities that did not belong elsewhere. Its listed routines included sample data and numerical-differentiation helpers. These are historical examples, not functions to expect in a current SciPy installation.

Legacy function What it provided
ascent An 8-bit grayscale demonstration image.
face A color raccoon demonstration image.
electrocardiogram An example electrocardiogram signal.
derivative A numerical-differentiation helper.
central_diff_weights Weights for a finite-difference approximation to a derivative.

The SciPy 1.12 legacy reference marked the module deprecated since SciPy 1.10.0 and anticipated removal in SciPy 2.0. SciPy removed its functions earlier, in version 1.15.

When was scipy.misc deprecated and removed?

SciPy 1.10.0 deprecated scipy.misc. The SciPy 1.15 release notes state that all functions in the submodule were removed. The current SciPy roadmap says: “All features have been removed from scipy.misc, and the namespace itself will eventually be removed.” The namespace’s eventual removal is distinct from the removal of its functions: do not rely on it being available in future SciPy versions.

For the release-specific record, see the SciPy 1.10 release notes and SciPy 1.15 release notes.

What replaces scipy.misc?

For sample datasets

Use scipy.datasets for dataset retrieval. SciPy introduced this dedicated submodule and identifies it as the preferred destination for dataset methods previously associated with scipy.misc. Consult the SciPy 1.10 release notes and the current datasets documentation for available dataset functions and usage.

For numerical differentiation or other operations

scipy.datasets is not a universal replacement. For a former helper such as derivative or central_diff_weights, first identify what the code needs to calculate, then select a supported API or library for that task. SciPy’s release guidance does not provide a complete, one-to-one replacement map for every former scipy.misc function.

How to fix an import error from scipy.misc

An import such as from scipy.misc import ascent can fail with current SciPy because the functions were removed in version 1.15. Rather than changing the import blindly, identify the function’s purpose and migrate that operation.

  1. Find every dependency. Search your project for scipy.misc imports and calls, including imports inside helper modules or tests.
  2. Identify the operation. Determine whether each call retrieves sample data, performs numerical differentiation, or does something else.
  3. Replace it appropriately. Use scipy.datasets for dataset retrieval. For other operations, select a maintained API or library that meets the code’s needs; do not assume the dataset module replaces them.
  4. Run tests with your supported SciPy version. Check both the migrated behavior and any code that depended on the old function’s output or format.
