In mouse experiments, the channels contained amyloid beta and tau—proteins studied in Alzheimer’s disease—and tracers reached channels at the brain’s surface within 7.5 minutes in some experiments. The findings suggest a possible route for proteins to move out of the brain, but they do not show that this route clears Alzheimer’s-linked proteins in living people or that it could be used to treat the disease.
What are the newly reported channels?
ScienceAlert reported on October 6, 2026, that University College London researchers described a network of channels about 2 micrometers across. The channels are associated with arteriole walls, structures around venules, and the membranes covering the brain. The researchers propose that fibroblastic reticular cells form them. The work is a preprint, meaning it had not undergone peer review when ScienceAlert published its account.

The team proposes that the arteriole- and venule-associated structures may connect into a route toward the brain’s surface. This is a proposed anatomical pathway, not yet a fully explained transport system: the mechanism that would move fluid or proteins through it remains unresolved.

What did the experiments show?
Evidence from mice
In mice, fluorescently labeled tau and amyloid beta were observed inside the channels as they moved. In some experiments, tracers reached channels at the upper surface of the brain within 7.5 minutes of administration, according to ScienceAlert’s account of the researchers’ results. The report also says the animals’ own amyloid beta was found in channels in mice modeling aspects of Alzheimer’s disease.

These observations support a possible transport role. They do not establish how much amyloid beta ultimately leaves the brain by this route, or whether the channels account for a substantial share of protein clearance.
Evidence from human tissue
The researchers examined tissue removed from five patients during brain-tumor surgery. Similar structures were present in that tissue, and fluorescently labeled tau and amyloid beta concentrated in them when applied outside the body. This is evidence of similar structures and uptake in excised tissue; it does not demonstrate that the channels function as a clearance route in living people.

How does this fit with other ways the brain may handle proteins?
The proposed channels would be one possible route among several. ScienceAlert’s report also notes that proteins may be broken down within brain tissue or move across blood-vessel cells into the bloodstream. The report describes roughly similar amounts of tau passing through arteriole- and venule-associated routes in the experiments, but does not provide enough methodological detail to treat that as a general comparison of their contributions.

Neuroscientist David Attwell, quoted by ScienceAlert, said, “The pathways by which toxic proteins are removed from the brain are poorly understood,” underscoring that the newly described structures do not resolve the broader question of how protein clearance works.

What the finding does—and does not—mean for Alzheimer’s disease
Amyloid beta and tau are important to Alzheimer’s research, but this study does not show that the channels cause or prevent Alzheimer’s disease. It did not establish that impaired flow through them initiates the disease, measure a change in memory, or test a therapy intended to speed protein removal.
Attwell said future work would need to demonstrate that the tubes function similarly in living humans. He also raised whether slowed pumping contributes to Alzheimer’s and whether speeding it could help treat the disease; those are open questions, not results from a tested intervention. The report identifies the underlying work as a bioRxiv preprint, and its account is secondary reporting rather than a substitute for the primary paper.
