The “better graphene battery” in this story was Graphenano’s Grabat battery, announced in 2016—not a newly verified breakthrough or a proven consumer product. Graphenano claimed energy density of up to 1,000 Wh/kg, but the available evidence does not establish that figure as independently verified performance from a commercial battery cell. The project’s own 2018 update still described its plant as being commissioned and product certifications as unfinished.
What the 2016 graphene-battery announcement claimed
Futurism’s July 27, 2016 article covered Grabat, a proposed graphene polymer battery from Spanish company Graphenano. It repeated claims of up to 1,000 Wh/kg, a voltage of 2.3 V, and rapid charging and discharging, and described possible uses in electric vehicles, homes, bicycles, drones, and pacemakers. Those were company claims and proposed applications, not demonstrated specifications for a commercially available product. The article also forecast prototypes in mid-2016 and commercial production by the end of that year. Read the 2016 report.

In a February 2016 release, Graphenano described the batteries as prototypes and said it was preparing a production center in Yecla. The company reported tests exceeding 1,000 Wh/kg, but the release was reproduced in a third-party archive rather than presented as a complete independent test report. The accurate shorthand is 1,000 Wh/kg claimed — Graphenano/Grabat Energy, 2016; it should not be read as a verified commercial-cell rating. See the archived company announcement.
Was the 1,000 Wh/kg figure independently verified?
The sources available for this claim do not establish that it was. El Confidencial reported that TÜV Rheinland characterized material presented by Grabat as a page from a technical test report, not a complete independent certificate, and said it had no matching record in its database. This is a news report of TÜV Rheinland’s response, not the underlying test file. It supports a distinction between a test document and a product certification; it does not, on its own, settle every technical question about the battery. Read El Confidencial’s account.

Energy-density figures also need context: a material-level measurement is not automatically comparable to a complete cell or battery pack. A meaningful comparison would identify what was weighed, the test conditions, and whether the figure came from a cell, a finished battery, or a component. The reviewed sources do not provide a confirmed commercial-cell result for Grabat that would make a direct comparison with lithium-ion batteries reliable.
What happened after the launch forecast?
Graphenano’s 2018 press release said its Yecla plant was still being commissioned. It described cell testing as ongoing and said the product would reach the market after the plant was fully operational and product certifications were complete. That later company statement does not match a reading of the 2016 forecast as proof that commercial production had been achieved. It is also a company update, not independent confirmation of the battery’s performance. Read Graphenano’s 2018 update.

Graphenano’s current certificates page lists certifications related to concrete and mortar admixtures, management, and dental products, but does not list battery product certification. That page alone cannot prove that no battery research or other certification exists; it does mean the page does not substantiate a certified Grabat retail battery. View the company’s certificates page. A 2017 Graphene Flagship technology roadmap listed a Grabat-related battery manufacturing item as a development to monitor, which is historical context rather than evidence of validated specifications or market entry. Graphene-related battery research is real, but that does not verify every product advertised as a “graphene battery.” Grabat’s specific performance claims remain unconfirmed by the reviewed evidence, and no suitable current consumer product matching this claim is substantiated here. The evidence therefore cannot support a conclusion that this battery outperforms lithium-ion in real-world use.

When evaluating a battery claim, look for evidence that identifies:
- What was tested: the active material, a single cell, or a complete battery pack.
- How it was tested: test conditions and methods, including charging, discharging, and safety procedures.
- How it lasts: cycle-life results and the conditions under which they were measured.
- What is certified: whether certification applies to a particular product and what its scope covers.
- Whether it is available: evidence of a product on the market, rather than a prototype, forecast, or proposed application.
Without those details, a headline number or the word “graphene” is not enough to establish a practical advantage over a conventional battery.
