For a Schoology LTI integration, start by confirming the tool’s LTI version: legacy LTI 1.0/1.1 providers are configured as External Tools, while LTI 1.3 apps use Schoology’s App Center route. The setup then depends on whether you are a system administrator installing centrally, a course administrator adding a provider for one course, or an instructor placing an already configured tool in course materials.
Choose the right LTI version and installation route
Ask the vendor which LTI version its integration supports before entering settings. Schoology’s administrator documentation describes the External Tool Provider workflow for LTI 1.0/1.1, at either system or course level. For LTI 1.3, follow the app’s Schoology App Center instructions and the provider’s documentation; the legacy Consumer Key and Shared Secret workflow does not apply. PowerSchool’s system-management guide and its external tool provider instructions explain the legacy path. Schoology’s developer documentation says it supports LTI 1.1 but recommends LTI 1.3 for new app development. Review the developer guidance for current details.

Do not assume compatibility from a vendor’s marketing description alone. Schoology says it has no automated way to verify publisher compatibility; check 1EdTech/IMS conformance certification information or ask the publisher directly.
Get the provider’s exact settings before configuring
For a legacy External Tool, request the following from the tool provider. The required values vary by provider and institution, so do not reuse credentials or data settings from another integration.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The supported LTI version.
- A Consumer Key and Shared Secret, if required.
- The launch domain or URL, or the configuration URL/XML.
- Which user information is sent at launch, such as a name, email address, or username.
- Any custom parameters, with the exact parameter names and values.
PowerSchool’s course materials documentation and system-management guide describe the fields and configuration options. Treat launch data and credentials as sensitive: use the vendor’s values and your institution’s privacy requirements rather than sample secrets.
Install a legacy tool at the right administrative scope
Use system-level installation when the district wants centralized configuration and distribution. A course administrator can add a legacy provider at course level when it has not been configured centrally. The setting names below reflect the documented Schoology interface; access can depend on the administrator role.

Add the configured tool to course materials
Once a provider is configured, an instructor can add an external tool as course material through Add Materials → Add File/Link/External Tool → External Tool, or add materials from Resources. PowerSchool explains the instructor workflow in External tools: add and grade.
Grading can be enabled for supported materials, but understand the workflow limitation before relying on it: Schoology does not automatically detect submissions from LTI or external tools, and it does not send its usual submission notifications, grading reminders, or overdue notifications for these materials. Instructors and students may need to follow the provider’s own submission and status process.

Use the App Center for LTI 1.3 apps
LTI 1.3 setup is app-specific and follows Schoology’s App Center flow, not the legacy External Tool Provider form. Consult the app’s installation instructions and the vendor’s documentation for required permissions and organization-level steps. Schoology’s App Center documentation describes the route.

Example: Google Drive
Schoology documents Google Drive as an LTI 1.3 app in App Center. Its integration can access Drive content from Schoology resources, add Drive content to course materials and activities, and support student submissions connected to Drive. The installation is an administrator App Center flow and requires appropriate Google Workspace for Education administrator permissions for organization installation. See the Google Drive app administrator guide.

Example: Turnitin
Schoology’s Turnitin instructions describe a legacy LTI setup requiring an institutional Turnitin license and credentials supplied by Turnitin. The documented configuration has separate US and UK URLs and requires a unique URL for each building. Treat these as Turnitin-specific instructions, not general LTI values. Consult PowerSchool’s Turnitin LTI tool guide and confirm current credentials and URLs with the provider.
For developers building a Schoology app
Schoology’s developer documentation recommends LTI 1.3 for new app development while stating that LTI 1.1 is still supported. It describes OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect requirements, and notes that certain placements require LTI Deep Linking. Course Materials placement supports LTI Launch Links, including lineitem data, and HTML links; Rich Text Editor placement supports launch links without lineitem data. Schoology reviews whether app placements are suitable as part of its approval process. Check the live LTI Apps documentation for implementation details before building or submitting an app.
