It is not a general-purpose Wi-Fi bridge, and you do not need it for the lock’s local Bluetooth app connection. Both products are discontinued, and Schlage’s current support pages conflict about whether Wi-Fi and remote access still work. Don’t buy a BR400 on the assumption that it will restore remote control.
What the Schlage Sense Wi-Fi Adapter does
The BR400 provides the Wi-Fi connection for the Schlage Sense BE479. In Schlage’s documented setup, you add the adapter through the Schlage Home app, connect it to your home wireless network, and place it near the lock. The adapter was intended to let owners control the lock remotely through Schlage’s app; Schlage’s 2017 announcement described the adapter as a way to connect remotely without a smart-home platform. That describes its original purpose, not a guarantee of service today.

If you only want to pair a discontinued BE479 with Schlage Home while nearby, Schlage says the lock can connect by Bluetooth without Wi-Fi. The adapter is relevant to the Wi-Fi path, not that local Bluetooth connection.
Do you still need one for remote access?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer based on Schlage’s published guidance. Schlage says the Sense lock and its adapter were discontinued in July 2020 on its Sense Works With page. A support article updated September 2, 2026 says the BE479’s remote access and Wi-Fi features are unavailable, while other Schlage pages still publish BR400 pairing and Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions.

Those pages do not explain whether the difference is due to outdated instructions, a support limitation, or differing existing configurations. Treat remote operation as uncertain. If you already own the setup, confirm your specific lock, adapter, app, and service status with Schlage before relying on access away from home. Do not buy a used adapter expecting it to make remote access work.
How the BR400 setup is supposed to work
Schlage’s published instructions describe this process for existing equipment. They do not establish that remote service is currently available.

- In the Schlage Home app, start the process to add the BR400 adapter and scan the QR code on the adapter.
- Plug in the adapter and follow the app’s instructions to join its temporary network.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network in the app and enter its password.
- Place the adapter within approximately 15 feet of the BE479, as Schlage recommends.
Schlage’s BR400 pairing instructions provide the setup steps. Its separate BE479 app-pairing article covers the discontinued lock and local app pairing.
What to check if an existing adapter will not connect
Schlage’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting page identifies adapter connectivity as a possible source of problems and recommends checks including a soft reset, reinstalling the app if needed, and optimizing adapter placement.

- Check placement: Keep the BR400 within Schlage’s approximately 15-foot recommendation for the lock.
- Check the network bands: Schlage’s troubleshooting guidance calls out 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz considerations on dual-band networks. Follow its current instructions for your router rather than assuming the adapter can use either band.
- Try the published reset and app steps: Schlage recommends a soft reset and, if needed, reinstalling the app.
- Verify service availability: A successful network connection does not by itself establish that remote access is currently supported. Ask Schlage about your exact setup before treating the lock as remotely reachable.
When replacement may make more sense
Schlage Encode BE489 is a separate deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi and remote control through the Schlage Home app; it does not use the BR400 and is not an adapter for the BE479. See Schlage’s Encode product information and Encode FAQs for its features. Replacing a lock means choosing and installing a different product, not adding an accessory to Sense. Schlage identifies the Sense as discontinued and says it is no longer supported by Apple HomeKit, so check the platform support you need before choosing a replacement.
