Schiit Freya 2 Offers Five Ways to Mix Tubes and Solid State

Schiit’s Freya 2 combines selectable tube and MOSFET stages with passive operation. Here is what its five reported modes change and what buyers should verify.

Schiit announced the Freya 2 on September 30, 2026, with launch prices of $999 in black and $1,049 in silver, including four tubes. Its Fusion Architecture lets listeners choose passive operation or combinations of tube and MOSFET stages. The detailed five-mode breakdown below comes from ecoustics’ October 2026 overview; Schiit’s announcement confirms the broader selectable architecture but does not enumerate all five modes.

What changes across the five modes?

The practical difference is which stages use tubes, which use MOSFETs, and whether the signal passes through active gain at all. Schiit describes the architecture as supporting all-tube, hybrid, all-solid-state, and passive configurations. The exact five-mode names and stage assignments are reported by ecoustics, rather than in Schiit’s launch announcement.

Mode Stage configuration What it means
Passive Active gain bypassed Volume control remains, but the preamp does not add active gain, according to the ecoustics overview.
All solid state MOSFET voltage-gain and output stages No tubes are used in the signal path.
Tube Input Tubes for voltage gain; MOSFET output stage The input/voltage-gain stage is tube-based, while MOSFETs handle output.
Tube Output MOSFET voltage-gain stage; tubes on output MOSFETs provide voltage gain and tubes are used at the output stage.
All tube Tubes in both stages, using all four tubes Both voltage-gain and output stages use tubes.

These are circuit configurations, not a ranking of sound quality. No independent listening comparison or measured performance test is established here, so the mode that suits a system depends on its gain needs and the listener’s preference—not a demonstrated claim that one setting sounds better.

How Fusion Architecture works—and what is verified

Schiit calls the design “Fusion Architecture” and says owners can select which stage uses tubes, or choose all-solid-state or passive operation. Schiit co-founder and head of analog development Jason Stoddard described it as a way to use tubes for voltage gain, current gain, both, or neither, within the same topology. Those are manufacturer descriptions of the design; they should not be mistaken for independent performance findings.

#1 Best Overall
Schiit Saga 2 Class A Zero-Feedback Differential Preamp w/Remote - Black
  • Enjoy passive or active modes with a fully discrete, Class-A, no-feedback design.
  • Control volume, switch sources, add gain, and listen to headphones from this one device. Saga 2 is Forkbeard compatible, but the module is not included with this unit.
  • Features a 64-step relay ladder volume for perfect channel matching.
  • Can be used with headphones or speakers. 4 Inputs so you can hook up a DAC, CD player, TV, etc. and switch between them. Select inputs, change volume, and pick from passive, active low gain, and active high gain, all from the included remote control.

Schiit also says that only tubes used in the selected mode are powered, and that tubes are completely off when no tube stage is selected. The announcement does not provide a full operating manual or detailed performance measurements. The five-mode labels and stage allocation are from ecoustics’ secondary overview.

Inputs, outputs, volume, and reported specifications

Schiit describes Freya 2 as differential and balanced, with balanced and single-ended connections. Ecoustics provides the detailed connector counts and additional specifications below; these were not included in the launch announcement and should be treated as secondary-reported figures rather than primary documentation.

Schiit Buf Coherence™ Tube Buffer Preamp
  • Featuring our unique Coherence output stage, Buf maintains absolute phase while providing a lush, harmonically rich tube sound that transforms cold digital audio into a warm, engaging experience.
  • Buf gives you the flexibility of added gain if your system needs a boost. It runs a serious 100V on the tube plates with a 100% linear power supply. No noisy switching power supplies or op-amps—just pure, high-voltage tube sonics.
  • Ships with a premium NOS 6N1P vacuum tube and rollable with popular 6922, ECC88, and 6DJ8 tubes.
  • The super-small footprint fits great on any desktop or equipment rack. When you don't want tube sound, simply turn off Buf to return to your original signal path.
  • Designed and built in the USA. 115VAC. USA Plug. Suitable for use in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Will not work in 220 – 240V countries.

Schiit says the relay-switched resistor ladder uses neither potentiometers nor ICs in the signal path, and that passive mode bypasses gain. These are design claims from the manufacturer; the published overview’s numerical specifications are not independent test results.

What to consider before buying

  • Decide whether you need active gain. Passive mode bypasses active gain; the secondary overview lists 0 dB or 12 dB gain in active operation. Check that the chosen configuration can drive your downstream amplifier and suit your source levels.
  • Match connections to your system. The reported XLR and RCA input/output counts may help when planning multiple sources or amplifiers, but consult current official documentation to confirm the rear-panel layout before purchase.
  • Choose a stage arrangement, not a promised sound. The modes let you select where tubes or MOSFETs are used. The available sources do not establish which configuration is audibly superior.
  • Account for tube upkeep and compatibility. Schiit says four new-production tubes are included and unused tubes are not powered in modes that do not use them. Ecoustics reports compatibility with 6SN7, 6N8S, and 5692 tube types, but Schiit’s launch announcement does not confirm those replacement models. Verify compatibility against a current official Freya 2 manual before buying substitutes.
