A schematic becomes a printed circuit board through a sequence of design steps: capture electrical connections, assign physical component footprints, place those parts on a board, route copper between them, check the design, and export files for fabrication. The schematic describes what connects; the PCB layout defines where components sit and how those connections are built.
What changes between a schematic and a PCB?
A schematic is a logical drawing of components and their electrical relationships. A PCB is the physical board: it has an outline, component footprints, pads, and copper traces that create the intended connections. The schematic does not, by itself, specify component positions or the copper paths that will be manufactured. Autodesk’s schematic design tutorial and Fusion Electronics workflow distinguish schematic capture from physical PCB layout.

The transition is not an automatic conversion from a drawing into a finished board. The design tool carries the components and their connections into the PCB editor, where a designer makes physical choices and checks that the result follows the project’s requirements.

Capture the circuit in a schematic
Add component symbols, assign values or part identities, and draw the electrical connections. This records the intended circuit behavior and connectivity, not the board’s physical arrangement.

ELEGOO 32Pcs Double Sided PCB Board Prototype Kit for DIY Soldering- 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
- Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
- Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
- From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
- Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power

Assign footprints and check the schematic
Choose a footprint for each component. A footprint is the physical pad and package pattern that the PCB uses to mount or connect that part. Then run an electrical rules check (ERC). KiCad’s documented workflow uses ERC before PCB layout; its schematic checks include issues such as output-pin conflicts, missing drivers, and unconnected pins. See KiCad 8.0 Getting Started and KiCad’s schematic-capture overview.
-
Move into PCB layout
Transfer the schematic components and connections to the PCB editor. Draw the board outline, place the footprints, and route copper traces between pads according to the circuit’s connectivity. Placement and routing must also account for physical and electrical constraints. KiCad identifies considerations including trace resistance, controlled impedance, and crosstalk in its PCB design overview.

Run board-level checks
Run a design rules check (DRC) against the constraints configured for the board. A DRC can flag violations of those rules; it is not a universal certification that the design satisfies every electrical, mechanical, safety, or product requirement. Review the board against the project’s requirements as well as the tool’s results.

Export fabrication files
Generate the manufacturing handoff after checking the board. Depending on the tool and the fabricator’s process, this may include Gerber or ODB++ data, drill information, a netlist, a bill of materials (BOM), and pick-and-place files. There is no single file set that applies to every handoff: confirm the intended fabricator’s requirements. Autodesk documents CAM Processor outputs in its Fusion Electronics workflow, and KiCad describes generating fabrication outputs in its 8.0 guide.

What do ERC and DRC actually tell you?
| Check | Where it applies | What it can flag | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERC | Schematic | Configured electrical-connection issues, including examples such as pin conflicts, missing drivers, and unconnected pins. | That the physical board layout, fabrication files, or finished product meet all requirements. |
| DRC | PCB layout | Violations of the board rules configured in the design tool. | That every engineering or product requirement has been encoded as a rule or that the design is otherwise error-free. |
KiCad documents both checks in its 8.0 Getting Started guide; its schematic-capture and PCB-design pages describe their respective design stages.
Why is the workflow iterative?
Layout work can reveal that a placement or route needs to change, while a schematic edit can affect the board’s component or connection data. KiCad 8.0 documents bringing schematic changes into the PCB design and pushing some board changes back to the schematic. Keep the project files together: project-level settings such as net classes and design rules can affect the board. The KiCad 8.0 guide describes this linked workflow.

Which PCB design tool should you choose?
There is no universal winner established by the documented workflows. KiCad describes an integrated schematic-to-board workflow and identifies itself as free and open-source software; Autodesk documents a comparable separation of schematic capture, PCB layout, and CAM output in Fusion Electronics. These descriptions do not establish a complete, current comparison of licensing terms, feature limits, or suitability for a particular user.
