Your phone reads the pattern and shows what it contains—often a web link, but sometimes text or an app action. In the usual camera flow, scanning and opening are separate: you review the result, then tap to continue. The QR code itself does not prove that its destination is trustworthy.
What happens when you scan a QR code?
- Your camera sees the pattern. Point the phone at the printed or displayed code. Depending on the device, you can use the regular camera or a dedicated scanner control; you usually do not need to take a photo.
- The camera software recognizes and decodes it. The phone presents the result in a banner, bubble, or link. Apple and Google describe the user-facing scanning steps, but their instructions do not establish one universal decoding method or whether every phone processes scans entirely on-device.
- You choose whether to open or use the result. On iPhone, Apple’s instructions say to tap the link that appears. Google’s Camera help similarly says to tap the banner. The result could be a web page, plain text, an app, or a payment app. Apple’s iPhone scanning instructions and Google Camera’s QR-code help describe these flows.
- The destination or feature takes over. A web link can ask a browser to load a page; an app link may open an installed app or lead to an app handoff. Special-purpose codes can support account sign-in or file sharing, with additional steps depending on the feature.
The QR code carries data; it is not a command that automatically completes every action. What happens next depends on what the code contains, what software your phone supports, and what you choose to approve.

What can a QR code open or contain?
A QR code is not necessarily a website link. The scan result can be readable text, a browser destination, or an action handled by an app. Google documents QR codes for account sign-in and Quick Share as well as ordinary camera results. Those workflows can involve on-screen verification or a secure sharing link; they are not the same as simply opening a web page. See Google’s account sign-in guidance and Google’s Quick Share guidance.

A preview gives you a chance to inspect a web address before opening it. It does not certify that the page is safe, and an app or payment prompt still deserves its own scrutiny.

How scanning differs on iPhone and Android
| Phone | Where to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Use Camera, or use the Scan Code/Code Scanner control in Control Center if available. | Frame the code, then tap the displayed link to continue. See Apple’s instructions. |
| Android | Use the camera on a supported device, or a scanner shortcut where the phone offers one. Pixel phones have camera suggestions and a Quick Settings scanner path. | Tap the banner to open the result. Availability and steps vary by device, software version, and settings. Google’s account sign-in instructions specify Android 9 or higher for that sign-in workflow only; it is not a universal minimum for every Android QR scan. See Google’s Pixel camera help. |
Names and locations of controls can change with software updates. If your camera does not show a result, check your phone’s camera or quick-settings options for a scanner feature.
Can scanning a QR code hack your phone?
Scanning alone is not the same as being hacked. The documented risks arise from what a person does after scanning: opening a deceptive site, entering a password or payment details, downloading malicious software, or granting access in response to a prompt. The FTC and FBI warn that QR codes can direct people into these kinds of scams; they do not establish that every scan is dangerous.

Scams can be designed to look ordinary. The FTC warns that a scammer may paste a code over a legitimate code at a public location, such as a parking meter, or send an unexpected QR code in a message. FBI El Paso’s September 19, 2023 consumer guidance also describes unsolicited packages with QR codes intended to prompt people to disclose personal or financial details or download malware. The FBI’s description is apt: “The image itself is filled with data that can do lots of helpful things, such as send you to a particular website or payment portal.” Read the FTC’s QR-code scam guidance and the FBI’s QR-code advisory.

- Inspect the previewed address. Look for misspellings, unexpected wording, or a lookalike domain before opening a link. A familiar logo or page design is not enough to verify a site.
- Verify unexpected requests independently. Do not use a QR code in an unsolicited email, text, or package to sign in, pay, or provide personal information. Contact the organization through a phone number or website you already know.
- Check public codes for tampering. Look for a sticker placed over the original code or other signs that it has been altered. If anything seems off, use the service’s official payment or access method instead.
- Review every follow-up prompt. A scan does not obligate you to enter credentials, provide financial information, download an app, or grant permissions. Treat each request as a separate decision.
- Keep your phone and apps updated. If you entered a password on a site you now suspect is fake, change that password and review relevant account or payment activity.
These precautions reflect the tactics described by the FTC and the FBI. Their advisories identify possible methods, not the likelihood that any particular code is fraudulent.

Why might a phone fail to scan a QR code?
A failed scan is often a camera or positioning problem, not evidence that the code is broken. Google recommends checking common factors including a smudged lens, poor lighting, tilt, distance, blur, glare, and framing. Try these adjustments:
- Wipe the camera lens with a soft, clean cloth.
- Move to brighter, even light and avoid reflections across the code.
- Hold the phone steady and aim straight at the code.
- Adjust the distance until the whole code is in view and in focus.
- Try the phone’s dedicated scanner control if its regular camera does not recognize the code.
Google lists these factors in its Camera help and Pixel phone troubleshooting guidance.
