Yes, a scanner can work with the Snapdragon-powered Surface Pro 11, but “Windows 11 compatible” does not automatically mean “Windows 11 ARM64 compatible.” The decisive factors are the exact scanner model, its USB or network connection, the driver architecture, and whether you need only basic scans or advanced features such as duplex, OCR, feeder control, film scanning, or color management.
Windows 11 can emulate many x86 and x64 applications, but emulation does not make an Intel-only hardware driver compatible with ARM. Microsoft explains the distinction in its ARM Surface peripheral guidance. Treat the Surface Pro 11 as a model-by-model compatibility decision.
What “Surface Pro 11 scanner support” actually means
The relevant device is the Snapdragon-based Surface Pro 11th Edition, not an Intel Surface Pro. Confirm the processor rather than relying on the product name: open Start → Settings → System → About and check the processor and system type. Microsoft’s ARM PC installation guidance uses this page to identify ARM systems.
There are four separate compatibility layers:
- Application: the scanning program may be ARM64, x86, or x64.
- Device driver: the component that communicates with the scanner may require ARM64 support.
- Vendor utilities: OCR, scanner buttons, feeder controls, film modules, and color-management tools may have separate requirements.
- Connection protocol: USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, WIA, eSCL/Mopria, WSD, or a proprietary protocol each create different compatibility risks.
An emulated scanning application can open normally while its required hardware driver fails to install. That is why a scanner can work on an Intel Windows computer yet fail on the Surface Pro 11.

The practical compatibility hierarchy
| Situation | Likely result |
|---|---|
| Official ARM64 driver and supported utility | Best chance of full functionality |
| Network scanner using a standard Windows-compatible interface | Often usable, especially for basic scans |
| Windows inbox WIA or generic driver | Basic scanning may work; advanced controls can be missing |
| Older USB scanner with proprietary x64 or kernel driver | Highest risk of failure |
| Model listed by VueScan | Potential workaround; installation caveats apply on ARM |
USB versus Wi-Fi and Ethernet scanners
USB scanners
USB is the highest-risk connection because older devices often depend on a vendor-specific driver. Typical symptoms include an unknown device in Device Manager, a scanner that appears but cannot preview, or an installer that reports an unsupported processor. A scanner may also produce a basic image while losing feeder, duplex, button, or color features.
Network scanners
Network models can be easier when they support WIA, eSCL/Mopria, WSD, scan-to-folder, scan-to-email, or a browser-based workflow. Network connectivity alone is not a guarantee: a device may still require a proprietary Windows utility.
Epson states that Windows 11 ARM can install a generic driver for some network-connected scanners when a full driver is unavailable. That fallback provides basic scanning and requires the scanner and Surface to be on a network. See Epson’s Windows 11 ARM scanner-driver guidance.

- Scan from the Surface: requires a compatible Windows scanning interface or application.
- Scan directly from the device: scan-to-email, scan-to-folder, SD-card, or cloud workflows can avoid the Surface driver entirely.
- Multifunction printer: successful printing does not prove that scanning is supported; printing and scanning use separate drivers.
How major manufacturers handle ARM support
Brother
Brother says support varies by model and directs users to its model-specific Windows 11 ARM support list. For USB connections, Brother states that its scanner driver and Brother iPrint&Scan cannot be used on ARM. It points users toward built-in Windows drivers for supported basic functions and warns that settings and features may be unavailable. Brother’s original downloadable or bundled drivers are not supported on ARM processors; details are in its ARM processor support article.
Epson
Epson’s position is model- and connection-specific. Some products have ARM-compatible drivers; others fall back to a generic network driver with basic scanning only. Epson’s ARM-compatible driver list and its ARM64 scanner table identify Windows versions, driver versions, and USB or network limits. The latter is a Japan-region table, so US customers should verify the same model on Epson’s US support site.
Canon
Canon support varies by product and utility. Do not assume that a Canon printer driver includes a working scan utility. Check the exact scanner or multifunction model’s support page. A Canon Community report describes a missing ARM scan utility on a Snapdragon Surface and a VueScan workaround; treat that as troubleshooting evidence, not official certification.

Fujitsu/Ricoh ScanSnap, HP, and other brands
Verify the exact model and current vendor software. ScanSnap products commonly depend on ScanSnap Home rather than only a generic Windows interface. For HP and other brands, look for an ARM64 driver, supported utility, WIA/eSCL/Mopria or WSD support, and network workflows. A general “Windows 11” label is insufficient.
Install and test a scanner on Windows 11 ARM
- Confirm the processor: open Settings → System → About and verify that the Surface is ARM-based.
- Update Windows: open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Microsoft recommends keeping ARM Surface devices current because peripheral support can arrive through updates. See the Microsoft ARM guidance.
- Look up the exact model: search the manufacturer’s site for the model number plus “Windows 11 ARM64,” “Windows 11 ARM,” “Snapdragon Windows,” “WIA,” “eSCL,” or “Mopria.” Include “USB” or “network” in the search.
- Add it through Windows: open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device. This is Brother’s recommended path for supported ARM devices.
- For network models: connect the Surface and scanner to the same network, power on the scanner, choose Add device, wait for discovery, and add it if listed.
- For USB models: connect directly or through a powered, reliable dock, turn on the scanner, allow Windows Update to search for an inbox driver, then check Printers & scanners and Device Manager.
- Test the required workload: perform a preview, flatbed scan, feeder scan, duplex scan, multipage PDF, OCR, color scan, button launch, and repeated scans after reboot if those functions matter to you.
Do not install a generic x64 download merely because its page says “Windows 11.” The download must specifically identify ARM64 support or an inbox-driver method.
What may not work even when a scan succeeds
- Automatic document feeder and duplex scanning
- OCR or searchable-PDF creation
- Scanner buttons and hotkey services
- Automatic crop, deskew, and document-size detection
- Custom resolution, color depth, or color correction
- Film and negative scanning
- Vendor-specific PDF, email, or cloud workflows
- Sleep, wake, and repeated-scan behavior
Brother explicitly warns that built-in ARM drivers can omit features and settings. Epson similarly describes generic support as basic functionality rather than a full replacement for its feature-rich driver.

- High Resolution Document Scanner: CZUR Shine Surface Pro document scanner has 16 megapixels (4608*3456) camera, easily digitize various materials, such as books, documents, receipts, business cards, paintings, magazines, etc. *Not recommended for very Glossy Paper*
- Top Rotatable Webcam: There is a 2MP webcam on the top of the scanner that can be manually rotated 270°, it can help you capture your face while using a visual presenter or recording a video (you need to download the software "CZUR Camera" instead of "CZUR Scanner")
- Up to A3 Scan Size: By stretching the control lever, the maximum scanning area of the scanner can be adjusted from A4 (8.27''*11.69'') to A3 (16.5'' x 11.7''). Scan your documents better with a professional working surface and A3 scanning mat
- Curved Page flattening technology: CZUR document camera has patented flattening technology, which can intelligently flatten the unfolded arched book pages through AI algorithm
- OCR: Recognizes more than 180 languages and digitizes to editable PDF, Word, Excel and text formats. Please note that Thai, Hebrew, and Arabic are currently not supported. If you need the complete OCR language support list, please feel free to contact us for more details.
Troubleshooting common failures
The manufacturer installer will not run
The installer or its driver may not support ARM. Uninstall the failed package, restart the Surface, update Windows, add the scanner through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, and test a basic scan. Reinstall only software explicitly marked ARM-compatible. Microsoft discusses this approach in its ARM printer-installation guidance.
Printing works but scanning does not
This is normal for some multifunction devices because print and scan drivers are separate. Try the Windows installation path, the device’s scan-to-folder or scan-to-email function, a separate ARM-compatible scan package, or a supported third-party application.
The scanner appears but the app cannot scan
The app may require TWAIN while Windows provides only WIA, or the vendor utility may lack ARM-compatible driver components. Test another WIA-compatible application. If that works, the scanner is usable even though the original vendor workflow is not.

No ARM driver exists
- Use an Intel/AMD Windows PC for the scanner.
- Connect the scanner to another computer and save scans to a shared folder.
- Use scan-to-email or cloud features on the scanner itself.
- Replace it with a model whose support page explicitly lists Windows 11 ARM64.
- Check VueScan support for the exact model before considering its installation procedure.
A virtual machine is not a universal fix: the guest still needs USB access and a compatible driver.
VueScan as a possible workaround
Hamrick offers a Windows ARM64 build of VueScan and, as listed on August 18, 2026, its database claims support for 8,089 scanners from 42 manufacturers. The listed version is 9.8.56, dated June 28, 2026. Verify the exact model in the supported-scanner database before buying.
Edition capabilities differ. According to the edition comparison, Standard adds PDF, TIFF, multipage documents, feeder support, custom resolution, and color controls; Professional adds OCR, film and slide support, raw output, ICC profiles, and calibration. The license guidance says one-time licenses remain usable indefinitely with one year of free updates, while subscriptions require an active subscription. Current prices should be checked on the official VueScan site.
Hamrick also documents a Windows 11 ARM caveat: some USB, FireWire, and SCSI devices require temporarily disabling driver-signature enforcement during installation. Follow the driver-signature guide only if the model is supported and you accept the security and maintenance trade-off. Re-enable enforcement afterward; VueScan is not a guarantee for every scanner or vendor feature.
Recommended Free Tools
Should you buy a scanner for a Surface Pro 11?
Choose an existing scanner when
- The exact model has an official ARM64 driver or a documented inbox-driver path.
- It supports network scanning or standard protocols.
- Your needs are limited to basic flatbed or document scans.
- VueScan lists the model and its installation requirements are acceptable.
Prefer replacement hardware when
- The scanner is USB-only and depends on an old proprietary driver.
- You require reliable ADF, duplex, OCR, film, or color-management features.
- The vendor utility is essential to your workflow.
- The manufacturer provides no ARM statement for the exact model.
For a new purchase, prioritize an explicit Windows 11 ARM64 statement, a current support page for your region, network protocols, scan-to-folder or scan-to-email, and a return policy that lets you test the device on the Surface.
Bottom line
An official ARM64 driver is the best case. A modern network scanner with standard scanning protocols is often workable. An inbox driver may deliver only basic scans. An older USB-only scanner that requires a proprietary kernel driver is the riskiest choice. Verify the exact model, connection method, and features you need before relying on the Surface Pro 11 for important scanning.
