You can scan ordinary paperwork to PDF with a phone camera and a scanning app; you do not need to buy a scanner or spend $30 to get started. A phone stand can make repeated top-down captures steadier and more convenient, but it is optional. This approach suits occasional documents—not every high-volume, archival, or strict image-quality workflow.
What a phone can do instead of a scanner
A scanning app uses your phone camera to capture paper pages, then creates a digital file such as a PDF. Google documents scanning with the Google Drive mobile app, and Adobe describes document capture with Adobe Scan. That makes a phone practical for a receipt, a form, or a few pages that need to be saved or shared. The cited product information establishes capture and PDF features, not equivalent performance to a dedicated scanner for every document type or workload. There is no independent scan-quality comparison in the available evidence.
How to scan a document into PDF with your phone

Open a scanning feature you already trust

Capture the page clearly
Place the paper on a flat surface with even light. Hold the phone steady and frame the entire page. These are practical capture tips, not claims from a controlled camera test.

Review the scan before saving
Check that the crop includes the whole page, the orientation is correct, and text is legible. If the app offers cleanup controls, use them as needed, then inspect the result rather than assuming automatic processing got every edge right.

Save or share the finished file
Choose PDF when you need a document-style file, then open it once before sending or filing it. Confirm the pages are present and readable.

When another scanning app may help
Adobe Scan lists multi-page scanning and cleanup tools and can create PDFs or JPEGs. Its store listing also notes in-app purchases, so do not assume every advanced option is free. Check the app’s current account, storage, and subscription requirements for the feature you plan to use. Adobe Scan app information.

Adobe says scans can be saved to local storage, an Adobe account, or connected cloud services. Its FAQ advises waiting for a PDF to finish syncing before closing the app. If you depend on cloud storage, allow that sync to complete and verify the file is available where you expect it. Choose an app based on whether it is supported on your device, whether it creates PDFs and handles multiple pages, whether you need cleanup or text extraction, where the file is stored, and whether the required feature needs an account or paid tier. The cited sources describe capabilities and storage options; they do not provide an independent quality benchmark.

What to use now that Microsoft Lens is retired
Microsoft says Lens retirement began January 9, 2026, and support ended February 9, 2026. It is no longer a current recommendation for a new scanning workflow. If you still rely on it, transition to a currently supported scanning feature such as Google Drive’s mobile scan or Adobe Scan, then confirm the new app’s file-saving and account requirements before moving important paperwork. Is a $30 phone stand worth buying?
No purchase is needed for occasional scans. If you repeatedly capture pages from above, a stable overhead stand can make positioning easier and reduce the need to hold the phone. It is an accessory, not a scanner, and it does not by itself establish better scan quality.
