Printing on 11×17 paper (often called Tabloid) is a common need for brochures, diagrams, spreadsheets, posters, and engineering drawings. The catch: many home printers don’t support 11×17, and even when they do, the paper size has to match exactly across your printer settings and your print dialog.
This guide walks you through the full workflow—from confirming your printer’s 11×17 capability to choosing the correct paper size and scaling rules—using practical steps on Windows, macOS, and common mobile options. You’ll also get troubleshooting for the most frequent failures (missing paper size options, clipped output, and “paper mismatch” errors).

What 11×17 Means (and Why Printers Get Fussy)
11×17 refers to paper that’s 11 inches wide by 17 inches long. On printer UI, you’ll usually see one of these labels: 11 x 17, Tabloid, or Ledger (naming varies by manufacturer and region).

Print jobs fail or produce cropped results when the document size, printer driver setting, and actual loaded paper don’t agree. Your goal is to make all three match: page size, paper type/source, and scaling.
#1 Best Overall

- Reliable copy paper is perfect for everyday use
- Paper dimensions: 11"W x 17"L
- Paper weight: 20 lbs.
- Brightness rating of 92 for sharp, clear print results
Prerequisites: Confirm Your Printer Supports 11×17
Before you change any settings, verify capability. Most office printers that support 11×17 are designed for wider paper handling—home printers often top out at Letter (8.5×11) or A4.
Check the hardware
- Paper trays: Does your printer list 11 x 17 or Tabloid in the paper size menu? Some printers only support it in a specific tray (like Tray 2).
- Manual feed: Many printers support 11×17 only through a manual bypass tray.
- Duplex support: Double-sided 11×17 may require a specific setting or may not be supported on all models.
Check the paper you’re loading
- Use actual 11×17 sheets (or the closest supported equivalent). If you use incorrect sizing, you may see cropping or “paper mismatch” warnings.
- Confirm the paper type (plain, photo, matte, etc.). Some printers enforce 11×17 only with certain paper types.
Load 11×17 Paper Correctly
Loading is where most avoidable problems start—skewed prints, incorrect orientation, and “wrong size” messages.
Set the printer’s paper size and tray
- On the printer control panel (or via the printer app), select Paper Size → 11 x 17 (or Tabloid).
- Select the correct paper source (Tray 1, Tray 2, or Manual Feed). If you load into the wrong tray, the printer may silently assume Letter.
Adjust guides and orientation
- Slide the side guides snug against the paper edges.
- For printers with a manual feed slot, feed according to the on-printer arrows/labels. Incorrect direction can cause severe misalignment.
- If you’re printing a landscape layout, still load the paper the same way—orientation is handled by the print dialog, not the physical load.
Decide Your Document Setup (Page Size vs. Scaling)
Even with the right paper loaded, scaling can ruin the result. You have two reliable strategies:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Best accuracy: set the document page size to 11×17 (in the app you’re printing from), then print at 100% or Actual size.
- If you can’t resize the document: keep the document size as-is and use scaling carefully in the print dialog—but be ready for margin differences.
Common scaling settings to use
- Actual size (or 100%): Produces the least distortion when sizes already match.
- Fit to page: Convenient, but it can change scale and may crop content at the edges.
- Fit to printable area: Helps when the printer can’t print full-bleed; still verify the ruler/margins.
Printing 11×17 on Windows (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, and Others)
Windows typically uses a printer driver plus a print dialog. The key is to set Paper size to 11×17 and control scaling.

- For duplex, only enable double-sided if your printer supports duplex on 11×17 and the driver offers it.
- Click Print.
If 11×17 is missing in Windows
- Wrong tray selected: choose the tray that supports 11×17.
- Driver not installed or outdated: update the driver from the manufacturer website (not just Windows Update).
- Manual feed requirement: switch Paper source to Manual Feed and check again.
- Default paper size locked: some printer utilities override dialog settings. Check the printer’s own software and the device control panel.
Printing 11×17 on macOS (and Confirming the Driver Settings)
On macOS, the macOS print UI often controls scaling and orientation, while the driver controls paper options. Both must align.
- Open the document in its app (Preview for PDFs works well).
- Press Command + P to open the print dialog.
- Select your printer at the top of the dialog.
- Open the drop-down labeled Paper Size and choose 11 x 17 or Tabloid.
- Set Orientation to match the intended layout.
- Set Scale to 100% or choose Actual Size if available.
- If you see Two-Sided, enable it only if the printer supports 11×17 duplex.
- If the dialog offers a Paper Source or Tray option, set it to the tray that holds 11×17.
- Print a single test page first.
macOS troubleshooting for missing paper sizes
- Use the correct printer driver: macOS sometimes lists 11×17 only when a full driver is installed.
- Confirm the printer’s internal setting: check the printer panel and ensure 11×17 is enabled/recognized.
- Bypass/manual tray: if your printer supports 11×17 only via manual feed, you may need to choose that tray in the print UI.
Printing 11×17 from iPhone or iPad (iOS/iPadOS Options)
Mobile printing varies widely by printer model, app, and whether you’re printing via AirPrint. Many phones can send the job, but the printer must still accept 11×17 and the print UI must offer the paper size.
- Load 11×17 into the correct tray and set the printer’s paper size to 11 x 17 (or Tabloid).
- On your iPhone/iPad, open the file (PDF in Files/Adobe Acrobat, or an image in Photos).
- Tap Share → Print.
- Select your printer under Printer.
- If available, open Options and look for Paper Size. Choose 11 x 17 or Tabloid.
- Set scaling to Actual Size or 100% if the option exists. If not, avoid “Fit to Page” unless you verify output.
- Confirm orientation.
- Tap Print.
When iOS won’t show 11×17
- AirPrint-based dialogs may not expose all paper sizes. In that case, print from a computer where you can control the driver settings.
- Some printer companion apps offer richer settings than iOS’s generic Print UI—check your printer’s official app if your model supports it.
Printing 11×17 from Android (Generic Steps)
Android’s print UI depends on whether you’re using the printer’s built-in driver, a manufacturer app, or the system print service.
- Load 11×17 into the correct tray and set the printer’s panel to 11 x 17 (or Tabloid).
- Open your PDF/image and tap Print from the Share menu.
- Select the printer.
- Find Paper size and select 11 x 17 or Tabloid.
- Select the correct paper source/tray.
- Set Scale to 100% or Actual size when possible.
- Confirm orientation and duplex settings (if offered).
- Print a single page test.
Best Practices for Perfect Output (Margins, Borders, and Cropping)
Most printers can’t print to the edge of the paper. Even when you pick 11×17, you may still see clipping if your document assumes full-bleed.

Use the right workflow for PDFs
- Prefer printing from PDF directly, not screenshots. PDFs preserve page size and vector content.
- When using margins, keep content inside a safe area (commonly 0.25 in / 6 mm as a practical starting point).
- If your PDF is created for Letter, switching to 11×17 often requires scaling (and sometimes reflow won’t happen).
For Excel/Word documents
- Set the document’s page size to 11×17 inside the app first.
- In spreadsheets, adjust page breaks and “Fit to” settings. A common failure is forgetting to change the worksheet’s scaling, then later changing only the print dialog.
Troubleshooting: What to Do When 11×17 Doesn’t Print Right
If the job fails or prints incorrectly, don’t keep changing random settings. Diagnose from the symptoms.
Symptom: “Paper size mismatch” or the printer refuses the job
- Verify the printer panel shows 11 x 17 for the exact tray you’re using.
- Verify the driver’s Paper size also matches 11×17.
- Check whether the printer expects 11×17 in Manual Feed only.
Symptom: Prints on Letter-sized paper or scales strangely
- Confirm the app’s page size is 11×17 (especially with Word and Excel).
- Set scaling to Actual size / 100%.
- If the printer driver has a “Default paper size,” update it in printer properties.
Symptom: Cropped edges (content cut off)
- Switch from Fit to page to Actual size and adjust margins inside the document.
- Reduce artwork to fit within printable margins. Many printers need a non-printable border.
- Check for “borderless” or “full-bleed” options if you’re printing graphics—note that borderless support often doesn’t include 11×17.
Symptom: Wrong orientation (landscape turns portrait)
- Set orientation in the print dialog and verify the document layout orientation.
- Try swapping orientation: if the preview looks correct but output is rotated, your driver may be interpreting orientation differently.
Symptom: Paper jams or skewed output
- Re-adjust the paper guides to remove excess play.
- Use the recommended tray for 11×17 (manual feed often performs better for uncommon sizes).
- Make sure you loaded the paper in the correct direction for that tray.
Common Mistakes That Break 11×17 Printing
- Changing only the driver or only the document: page size and scaling must align.
- Relying on Fit to page without checking scale: it may shrink or expand content and alter line weights.
- Ignoring the tray: selecting 11×17 but leaving paper source as Tray 1 (Letter) is a classic failure.
- Assuming duplex works: duplex 11×17 is not universal, and the driver may silently fall back or reject.
When You Don’t Have 11×17 Support (Alternatives)
If your printer can’t do 11×17, you still have options—especially for PDFs and diagrams.
Print in tiles (poster-style)
Many PDF tools offer “Poster” or “tile” printing. It splits the image into multiple sheets (e.g., 4×4 tiles) that you assemble into a large layout.

Choose a printer with wider support
When you regularly print engineering drawings or spreadsheets in tabloid format, upgrading to a printer that explicitly lists 11×17 in its tray/specs pays off.
Bottom Line
Printing 11×17 successfully is about matching three things: the paper you loaded, the printer driver’s paper size (often labeled 11 x 17 or Tabloid), and your document’s scaling (ideally 100% or Actual size). Once those align, the rest is mostly mechanical—tray selection, orientation, and margins.
If 11×17 doesn’t appear or output is clipped, don’t guess. Check the tray and duplex support first, then confirm driver/paper settings, and finally adjust margins or scaling in the app that created the file.
