Scaling Interactive Learning: Video, WebSockets, and Real-Time Quizzes

Scale interactive classes with two coordinated paths: CDN streaming for video and WebSockets for real-time quiz events, with transport choices based on latency and audience needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale a live class by treating video and quiz events as two coordinated delivery paths: send audio and video through a streaming pipeline and CDN, while using a persistent bidirectional connection such as WebSockets for quiz starts, answers, score updates, and instructor controls. Choose WebRTC instead of CDN streaming when the class needs subsecond, conference-like media interaction; for a large one-to-many audience, AWS recommends CDN delivery rather than relying on stateful WebRTC connections.

Why video and quiz messages need separate delivery paths

Video is a continuous media workload: it must be encoded, packaged into formats suitable for devices, made available from an origin, and distributed to viewers. Quiz traffic consists of comparatively small application events that need to move between the learner’s device and the class service. A WebSocket keeps a bidirectional connection open so either side can send those events without opening a new connection for every message. These paths can serve the same class, but they solve different delivery problems.

For AWS’s overview of live video delivery, see CloudFront’s live-streaming architecture. For the connection behavior and requirements discussed below, see CloudFront’s WebSocket documentation.

Choose video transport by latency and audience pattern

Option When it fits Scaling trade-off
WebRTC Consider it when subsecond, conference-like media interaction is a requirement, such as a class where participants need to interact through live audio and video. AWS notes that WebRTC is less effective for one-to-many distribution because it requires stateful connections to backend origins.
CDN streaming Use a CDN such as CloudFront when distributing a live stream broadly to viewers, particularly beyond a handful of viewers. A CDN distributes prepared media at scale, but the pipeline still needs an encoder, a suitable origin, and packaging when required by target devices.
Managed live-streaming service AWS recommends considering Amazon IVS if a team does not want to manage its own live-streaming service. This is an AWS architectural recommendation, not a universal performance or cost comparison.

These are AWS’s architectural recommendations, not universal benchmarks. The right choice depends on how much media interactivity the class needs and how many viewers it must serve; the sources do not establish a universal latency or audience threshold for every implementation. See the AWS Well-Architected Streaming Media Lens guidance.

Build the live-video path

In an AWS-based pipeline, the documented sequence is to encode the live input, package it for device formats if needed, serve it from an origin suited to the delivery requirements, and distribute it through CloudFront. AWS describes MediaLive for encoding, MediaPackage for formatting content for device types and supporting DRM features, and MediaStore as an origin option when encoded content already matches the intended delivery formats.

  1. Encode the live feed. MediaLive can produce the live video outputs for downstream delivery.
  2. Package when the target devices or formats require it. MediaPackage can format content for device types. Common formats described by AWS include MPEG-DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF.
  3. Select the origin to match the prepared content and delivery model. MediaStore is one AWS option when the encoded content already fits the formats intended for delivery. AWS advises choosing an origin designed for the required latency and data-consistency model.
  4. Distribute the stream through CloudFront. The CDN handles delivery to viewers; it does not replace encoding, packaging, or origin selection.

This is an AWS service example rather than a requirement to use that vendor. The CloudFront guide to on-demand and live video describes the media formats and workflow.

Use WebSockets for class events

WebSockets suit interactions that need low-latency, two-way application messages while a class is in progress. A quiz can use them to signal a question start, receive learner answers, send score updates, and carry instructor controls. Those examples apply the protocol’s bidirectional behavior to a learning product; the CloudFront documentation does not prescribe a quiz event format, broker, database, or server topology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CloudFront documents a WebSocket connection as starting with an HTTP upgrade handshake and then remaining open for frames in either direction. Its distributions support WebSockets when requests follow RFC 6455, and its current documentation describes WebSocket support over HTTP/1.1. Plan quiz event handling in the application as well as configuring the connection: a working socket transports messages, but by itself it does not define how the product validates, records, or presents an answer.

Plan for disconnects and restricted networks

A persistent connection can be interrupted by a client, server, or network disconnect. CloudFront expects clients to initiate a new connection after a disconnect, so the client needs a reconnect flow rather than assuming the socket will remain available for the entire class.

  • Make the interface communicate connection state so a learner can tell when their device is reconnecting.
  • Handle reconnection as a normal interruption path; avoid treating a dropped socket as proof that an answer or score update reached the service.
  • Test both host and learner devices on the networks used for classes, including school or business environments with proxies or firewalls.

Kahoot’s support guidance reports that school or business network security controls can interrupt WebSocket connections and cause a live game to show a reconnect problem. It recommends testing host and player devices. Its specific domain allowlist and TCP/443 guidance applies to Kahoot and should not be copied as a universal requirement for another learning product. See Kahoot’s connectivity guidance.

Validate capacity for your own workload

There is no general concurrent-user limit established for a WebSocket quiz implementation in these architecture and support sources. Do not infer one from a protocol description or from the fact that a CDN can distribute video broadly. Capacity depends on the actual application and workload, so test the expected audience, event traffic, connection behavior, and recovery path in the system you intend to operate.
