The practical test is the exact listing. Confirm the stated ratio, finished dimensions, base and accessory footprint, materials, contents, price, seller, and package condition. The label alone cannot tell you whether an item will fit your shelf, match the quality of your collection, or retain a sealed package in the condition you want.

What “scale figure” and “blister pack” actually mean
Scale is a proportion
A scale figure represents a character at a stated fraction of a reference height. Common labels include 1/7 and 1/8. In simple terms, a 1/7 figure is intended to be one-seventh of the represented character’s reference height, and a 1/8 figure one-eighth. The ratio is useful for comparing figures from the same character specification, but it is not a promise that every release will have the same measured height.
Manufacturers may use different character-height references, and a pose can make the finished object taller or shorter than a standing version. Hair, hats, weapons, wings, effects, a raised arm, and the base all change the outside dimensions. A scale fraction therefore tells you about proportion, not the complete shelf footprint.

Most importantly, a scale label is not a grade. It does not guarantee superior paint, sculpting, materials, durability, rarity, or resale value. Inspect the actual product photographs and specifications instead of treating “1/7” or “1/8” as a quality certificate.
Blister packaging is an enclosure
A blister pack uses a clear molded plastic shell, usually attached to a printed card, or a molded plastic tray inside a carton. The shell holds the figure and makes the contents visible. “Blister-pack figure” can therefore refer to an unopened carded item, a figure that was once sold in a blister but has been removed, or a product whose inner tray is informally called a blister.
Packaging language does not state the figure’s ratio. It also does not establish whether the figure is articulated, what accessories are included, or how well it is painted. Those are product-line and release-specific decisions.
Why the categories overlap
Think of the terms as answers to different questions. Scale answers, “What proportion is the figure?” Blister packaging answers, “How is the item enclosed and presented?” A collector can own a scale figure in a blister-style tray, a carded non-scale figure, or a scale figure sold in a conventional box. Comparing them as if one were a figure type and the other a competing figure type leads to the wrong purchase.

How scale affects display planning
Use the published dimensions, not the ratio alone
Before ordering, record the manufacturer’s stated height, width and depth. If those measurements are absent, ask the seller for them rather than estimating from a product photograph. Measure the shelf’s usable height under the shelf above it, then allow clearance for the tallest accessory or effect part. A figure that is nominally 1/8 scale may need more vertical room than a 1/7 figure with a compact pose, while a crouching 1/7 figure may occupy less height but more depth.
Include the base and the pose
Display space is consumed by the complete assembled object. Circular or irregular bases, transparent effects, capes, weapons and companion pieces can extend well beyond the character. Check whether the stated dimensions describe only the figure or the figure with its base. If the listing gives separate measurements, use the larger assembled footprint for your shelf plan.

Plan a consistent scene
Collectors who want a lineup should compare the same character-height assumptions and measure neighboring releases. Mixing 1/7, 1/8 and non-scale products can be visually appealing, but the characters will not share a consistent proportional relationship. A display-first buyer may prefer visual balance over mathematical consistency; neither choice is inherently correct.
Pose, articulation and accessories
Fixed display figures
Many scale releases are designed around a specific pose and a finished presentation. Their value to a collector may be the sculpt, facial expression, paint gradients and interaction between the character and the base. A fixed pose can be advantageous when you want a scene that stays assembled and does not require regular handling.
Articulated figures
Other products prioritize joints and interchangeable parts. Articulation can support alternate poses, but it also introduces seams, joint tolerances and a need for more shelf clearance. Do not infer articulation from packaging style or from a scale label; look for a joints list or photographs showing the range of movement.
Accessories are release-specific
Count every listed accessory: alternate faces, hands, weapons, stands, effects and companion pieces. A smaller figure can include more interchangeable parts than a larger one, while a large figure can devote more surface area to sculpted detail. An older design comparison from DC explains this tradeoff: larger figures can show off detail, while smaller figures may accommodate additional accessories and articulation. That is a design example, not a rule for every line.
Finish, sculpting and materials
Judge the actual release
Inspect close-up photographs for paint boundaries, gradients, facial alignment, seam placement and the consistency of translucent parts. Read the materials list for PVC, ABS, polystone or other specified components, and check care instructions. Two products with the same ratio can differ substantially because they come from different manufacturers, factories or revisions.

Line names indicate positioning, not a universal standard
Good Smile Company US describes its POP UP PARADE line this way: “POP UP PARADE figures feature intricate sculpting and gradated paintwork to faithfully bring out the charm of each character at prices lower than typical scale figures.” The statement explains that line’s intended balance of finish and price; it does not establish a universal price or quality threshold for all non-scale products, blister-packed items or scale figures.

Price and package contents: verify the exact listing
A documented small-figure example
Bandai’s US My Hero Academia blind-pack listing, checked October 13, 2026, shows an MSRP of $7.99. It lists figures measuring 3.5 inches, includes a stand with each figure, and offers six possible characters. A single pack does not contain all six characters. The page describes a blind-pack product; it does not identify the item as a blister-carded product, so it should not be used as a general price for blister packs or for scale figures.
Why a single price is not a category average
Prices vary with edition, size, licensing, production method, accessories, retailer, shipping and whether the item is new, opened or discontinued. The available Good Smile US figure-line information positions POP UP PARADE below typical scale-figure prices but does not provide an apples-to-apples price for a particular scale release. Do not turn either statement into a market-wide price range.
Check what the payment covers
- Confirm whether the listed price is an MSRP, a current retailer price, a preorder deposit or a used-item price.
- Check whether the stand, base, batteries, alternate parts and instruction sheet are included.
- Read the edition or product code so you do not compare a reissue with an original release by accident.
- Add shipping, taxes and any import charges before comparing totals.
- Review the seller’s return policy for missing parts, paint damage or a crushed package.
Packaging condition and the “Should I keep the box?” decision
When the package is part of the collection
Keep the original card, shell, tray, inserts and outer carton if you want an unopened display, intend to store the item, or may sell it later. Photograph the package when it arrives and record dents, creases, yellowing, cracked plastic and detached card edges. Store it upright, away from direct sunlight, heat and high humidity. Use an outer shipping carton or protective sleeve rather than stacking heavy items on a blister.

If you plan to display the figure loose, opening the package may be the most practical choice. Confirm that the shell can be opened without cutting through accessories or damaging the card, and keep small parts in a labeled bag. Before discarding anything, verify that the figure stands securely and that all listed pieces are present.
Do not assume a sealed premium
Packaging condition can matter independently of the figure, but the available sources do not establish a universal resale premium for sealed blister packaging. Value depends on character demand, edition, completeness, condition, authenticity and the buyer’s preferences. A perfect package cannot compensate for a damaged figure, and an opened figure may be preferable to someone who wants to pose it.
A buying process that works for either format
- Define your goal. Decide whether you want a fixed display, an articulated toy, an unopened package, a complete character set or a mixture of these.
- Choose a comparison target. Compare the same character or line where possible. This prevents packaging differences from hiding a difference in edition or design intent.
- Capture the exact identity. Write down the manufacturer, product name, edition or reissue designation, scale ratio if stated, and product code.
- Record physical measurements. Note the figure’s height, width and depth, then add the base, effects and accessory clearance. Measure your shelf before ordering.
- Inventory the contents. Match the listing’s photographs and text against the stand, alternate parts, weapons, effects and instructions.
- Inspect package condition. For sealed collecting, examine card corners, blister cracks, separation, fading and factory seals. For a loose display, check that opening will not damage parts.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include shipping, tax and any import charge, and distinguish a one-time promotional price from a recurring or published MSRP.
- Check the seller and return terms. Confirm authenticity signals, photos of the actual item, return deadlines and responsibility for shipping damage.
- Document receipt. Photograph the unopened parcel and contents before assembly. Keep the invoice and product code with your collection records.
Which choice fits common collector priorities?
You want a coordinated scale display
Prioritize stated ratios, reference-height consistency and the complete assembled footprint. Compare base designs and poses before buying several releases. Packaging can be retained or discarded according to your storage plan; it does not change the ratio.

You want an unopened carded presentation
Prioritize an intact card and clear shell, a sharp printed face, clean seals and protective shipping. Ask for photos of the actual package, because a stock image cannot reveal a crushed corner or a split blister. Confirm whether the figure is a blind-pack item or a specifically identified character before paying.

Prioritize joint count, range of motion, alternate parts and stand stability. Check the assembled dimensions in several poses. A compact package may contain a highly articulated figure, while a larger package may hold a mostly fixed display piece.
You want the best finish per unit of shelf space
Compare close-up paint and sculpt photographs, not category labels. A line marketed as lower-priced than typical scale figures may provide an attractive balance, but the exact release still determines its finish, accessories and footprint.
You collect for possible resale
Keep the complete package, inserts and proof of purchase, and avoid sunlight and compression damage. Treat resale as uncertain: condition and demand are decisive, and no general sealed-package premium is established.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Mistaking packaging for scale: A blister is not a size grade. Find the ratio or dimensions in the listing.
- Assuming a ratio gives exact shelf height: Add pose, hair, effects and base measurements.
- Reading “scale” as “premium”: Evaluate paint, sculpt, materials and quality-control photos for the specific release.
- Comparing MSRP with a used price: Label each figure as new, preorder, reissue, discounted or used before judging value.
- Assuming every character is included: Blind-pack assortments can list multiple possible characters without placing all of them in one pack.
- Ignoring package damage: Sealed collectors should inspect card and shell condition before accepting delivery.
- Discarding parts with the packaging: Open carefully, inventory accessories and store them in a labeled container.
- Using a stock photograph as proof: Request actual-item images when paint, seals or package condition matter.
Make the decision with two separate checklists

- Is a scale ratio stated, and what reference height does the manufacturer use?
- What are the assembled height, width and depth?
- Does the base or an effect part exceed the figure’s footprint?
- Is the pose fixed or articulated?
- Which accessories and alternate parts are included?
- What materials and care instructions are specified?
Package checklist
- Is the item sealed, opened, resealed or missing packaging?
- Is the package a carded blister, a molded tray, or another enclosure?
- Are the card, shell, seals and inserts intact?
- Will the seller protect the package during shipping?
- Do the return terms cover crushed packaging or missing parts?
Answer the figure checklist first if the object itself is your priority, and the package checklist first if the unopened presentation is the collection. Because scale and blister describe different attributes, many buyers will reasonably want both: a figure with a stated proportion and a package preserved in excellent condition.
