Choose a scaffold when its template matches the project; keep written guidance for rationale, ownership, and workflows the template cannot capture. For many teams, the useful answer is both.
What each option gives a new team member
ScaffoldX: repeatable project setup
A September 25, 2026, DEV Community article by ke jia describes ScaffoldX as a Node.js command-line tool that generates project templates. Its practical value, if the current template fits, is repeatability: team members can start from a consistent structure instead of recreating setup by hand. The article describes templates for several project types, but does not independently verify their current contents or behavior. Read the DEV Community article.

An onboarding document: rationale and local context
A written guide can explain why the team chose particular conventions, who owns a system, how local workflows work, and where to ask questions. Those details are useful even when a generated project already contains files and configuration. A command can reproduce structure; it does not, by itself, explain the team’s reasoning.
How to decide which one to use
| Question | ScaffoldX | Onboarding document |
|---|---|---|
| Can it repeat project setup? | The article describes a command that generates templates; verify the current template and command before adopting it. | Can describe setup steps, but does not automatically generate a project. |
| Can it explain local rationale? | The article does not establish that templates explain team-specific decisions. | Can document conventions, rationale, ownership, and unusual workflows. |
| Does it fit every architecture? | No. The article notes that a monorepo or unsupported technology stack may be a poor fit. | Can record project-specific guidance, though it still needs to be kept accurate. |
| What must the team maintain? | Keep templates aligned with the team’s code and setup requirements. | Update guidance when conventions, ownership, or workflows change. |
When a scaffold is the better starting point
Consider ScaffoldX when the project matches a supported template and the team repeatedly needs the same initial structure. Before making it the default, inspect the template against your actual stack and architecture, and verify the current installation instructions and generated files. A template’s existence is not evidence that it suits every team’s needs.

When the document matters more
Prioritize written guidance when a project uses a monorepo, an unsupported stack, or local processes that a template cannot express. It is also the place to explain decisions, ownership, and exceptions that would otherwise be easy for a newcomer to misread. A document can still include setup steps, but it should not imply that a hand-built process is automatically repeatable.
Why the two can work together
The DEV Community article frames the options as complementary: a command supplies a starting structure, while a document explains the “why.” In practice, link the guide to the matching template and document the template’s assumptions, any post-generation steps, and where the project differs from the default. That gives newcomers both a consistent start and context for making sound changes.

How much confidence to place in the published figures
The DEV Community article claims 12 “production-ready” templates and says setup can take three seconds. It also estimates a typical React and TypeScript setup at 30–40 minutes versus 30 seconds with the scaffold. These are the author’s claims, not independently benchmarked results: the article does not describe controlled tests, repeated trials, or an independent verification method. Treat them as illustrative, not as a promise of time saved or proof of production readiness. No independent study of ScaffoldX’s effect on onboarding outcomes is established by the cited sources.
