A browser’s built-in Save Page As can instead create a page plus a companion folder, a single HTML file, or—in some Chromium implementations—an MHTML file. The result depends on the browser and format selected; “complete” does not guarantee a working offline clone.

What Save Page WE includes
Save Page WE describes its purpose as saving a page “as currently displayed” to a single HTML file. Its resource presets are not identical, so the word “complete” should not be read as meaning that every possible asset or behavior is preserved.
Basic
- HTML elements.
- HTML image files currently displayed and canvas graphics.
- CSS stylesheets, currently displayed CSS images, and CSS font files used by the browser.
Standard
Standard includes Basic items, plus all HTML images, HTML audio and video files, HTML object and embed files, and WOFF fonts for any browser.

Custom
Custom includes Basic items plus resource categories you select. Options include all HTML images, audio and video, object and embed files, all CSS images, fonts, and scripts in same-origin frames. Scripts in cross-origin frames are never saved.
The extension documentation also describes settings for lazy content and images, retaining cross-origin frames, and maximum nested-frame depth. Those settings can affect the result on pages that load content dynamically or embed frames. See the Save Page WE listing and documentation for the available options.

What browser Save Page As preserves
Firefox
Firefox’s “Web page, complete” option saves the page with a separate directory for pictures and other resources. Its “Web page, HTML only” option saves the original page without pictures in one file and preserves the original HTML link structure. The complete format’s resource directory can be less convenient when moving or organizing a page as a single artifact.

Chromium’s engineering documentation distinguishes Complete HTML, MHTML, and HTML Only. Complete HTML requests savable resources from frames and serializes frame DOM/HTML; MHTML creates an MHTML file; HTML Only creates a single save item. The overview says MHTML is disabled by default in the Save Page As UI on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is the default on ChromeOS. These are documented Chromium implementation details, not a promise that every browser’s current dialog uses the same labels or offers the same choices.

Will the saved page work offline?
Either method can preserve useful offline content, but neither should be treated as a guaranteed faithful, interactive copy. A saved file may differ visually if images or other resources were not included, if content was not loaded when the save occurred, or if embedded content could not be captured. Save Page WE says scripts are disabled by default in saved pages, and it never saves scripts in cross-origin frames. Browser-native formats also have limitations: Mozilla notes that Firefox’s complete save may not retain the original HTML link structure.
For a page you need to consult later, inspect the saved file and its companion directory or single-file contents while you still have access to the original. If interactivity, dynamic data, authentication, or third-party embeds matter, keep the original URL as well; an offline save is not a substitute for a functioning live site.

Which method should you choose?
- Choose Save Page WE when a single HTML file and control over resource categories matter. Select Basic, Standard, or Custom according to whether you need only displayed assets or additional media, fonts, and other resources.
- Choose Firefox “Web page, complete” when you want Firefox’s native page-plus-resource-folder output.
- Choose Firefox “Web page, HTML only” when you want one HTML file and can accept that pictures are omitted.
- Choose a Chromium format based on the file you need—Complete HTML, MHTML, or HTML Only where the browser exposes it. Check the actual Save Page As choices in your browser rather than assuming every platform offers the same formats.
Capture a screenshot instead of saving a web page
Saving a page preserves some combination of HTML and resources. If the goal is a visual record rather than an offline copy to browse, a screenshot is a different artifact: it records the rendered appearance, not the page’s original link structure or working scripts.
