To save iPhone photos, choose the destination that matches your goal: turn on iCloud Photos to sync your library across devices, or export/download files to a computer or external drive for a separate copy. These are different outcomes: syncing keeps one library updated, while an exported copy gives you files outside that library.
Choose the right way to save your photos

Save photos to iCloud for access across devices
iCloud Photos syncs your photo library with devices signed in to the same Apple Account, as well as iCloud.com and Windows access. Apple says originals are stored in iCloud; if Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled, the phone can keep smaller local versions while full-size originals remain in iCloud. With Download and Keep Originals, full-size files are retained on the device instead. Your iCloud library uses iCloud storage, and the time to upload it depends on the collection size and connection speed. See Apple’s iCloud Photos access guidance and iCloud Photos setup guidance.

To enable it, open Settings, tap your name, choose iCloud, then Photos, and turn on Sync this iPhone. Labels can vary by iOS version and region. Enable iCloud Photos on the other devices where you want the library available.
Sync is convenient, but it is not an independent archive: edits and deletions can propagate across the synced library, and Apple says iCloud Photos items are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. For an additional copy, export or download the files to storage outside the synced library. Apple’s setup guidance recommends keeping backup copies.

Export originals from iPhone to external storage
For selected photos and videos, Apple documents exporting directly from Photos to a connected storage device. This creates a separate file copy rather than relying only on the synced library. A portable external drive or SSD can serve as the destination, but compatibility depends on the iPhone, connector, device format, and available capacity; Apple does not endorse a particular model.
- Connect a compatible external storage device to the iPhone.
- If iCloud Photos is on and iPhone storage is optimized, make sure the originals you want are downloaded to the phone first.
- In Photos, select the photos and videos to copy.
- Tap Share, then choose Export Unmodified Original.
- Choose the external device under Locations, then save.
Export Unmodified Original is the option to use when you want the original file rather than an edited or converted version. Apple’s steps and advice to separately back up exported information are in Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud.

Transfer photos to a Mac or Windows PC
A cable import is useful when you want photos in a computer-based workflow. Apple’s guide uses Photos for Mac and the Apple Devices app with a cable for Windows. If iCloud Photos is enabled on an iPhone being imported to Windows, download the full-resolution originals to the iPhone first; optimized local versions may not be available for that import. Follow Apple’s archive and copy guidance for Mac export options and Apple’s transfer guide for cable transfer details. Apple states that iCloud Photos uploads and stores original, full-resolution photos, although a device set to optimize storage may keep smaller local versions.
Download photos from iCloud.com
For a few cloud-stored items, select and download them from iCloud.com. Apple offers options including unmodified originals, highest resolution, and most compatible formats. Pick the format based on what you need: a compatibility-oriented download is not necessarily the original file format. See Apple’s iCloud photo and video download instructions.

Save items from a Shared Album carefully
Shared Album content is not automatically added to your personal library; save wanted items if you want them there. Version matters: Apple’s current guidance says systems at version 27 or later store Shared Album photos in original formats at full resolution. On version 26 or earlier, photos are reduced to 2048 pixels on the long edge, panoramas can be up to 5400 pixels wide, and videos are delivered at up to 720p. Comments and likes are not saved with the copied item. If full quality matters, retain the original in your personal library rather than treating a Shared Album copy as the only archive. For stronger protection against losing access to a device or synced library, keep another copy of important photos on a computer or external storage. Confirm that the copy contains the files you intended to keep, then store it separately from the iPhone. Apple advises making copies of iCloud information and separately backing up an exported Photos library in its archive guidance.
